I don't think it matters much how you define the term. The term has been defined for you, and that's what counts. Whether you think it's acceptable is another matter. Do you think such behavior is acceptable in domestic law enforcement? Imagine there was a hit and run. Your car fit the description (actual guilt is irrelevant at this point), so you're pulled over, arrested, and hauled in. Should local law enforcement have the personal discretion to kick you around a bit? Why or why not? Bad analogy. In those cases, all the parties involved can defend themselves. What would you call it, then, if someone in a bar got his buddies, strapped you into a chair with leather belts, then started going to town on you?

Cool... Doh! This is where you start holding your beliefs as a standard for others. Uncool. I dare to make the educated guess that the vast majority of those who gave their lives did so not for the icon, not for the cloth, not for the flag. They did so for their country. They did so for their buddies. They did so because they were doing what they were told. Plethora of reasons... I know it's so much easier to have a single, simple reason, but please bear with me here. Just as the reasons for which the many have given their lives in uniform are highly subjective, so is the perception of what a flag is to someone: highly subjective and highly personal. What it means to you is absolutely not what it means to everyone else. Diversity is a beautiful thing. So, to some, it's a paltry piece of cloth with dyes and patterns that serves as soft butt wipe when they've run out of Charmin. Fine. To others, it's a tool to make a point -- sometimes to proclaim patriotism, and other times to announce dissent. Fine, too. Let them do what they will. Freedom is a beautiful thing.
