Warning, small book coming... Before September 14, 2001... Looking for something in life, without knowing what. Feeling like I didn't deserve to be happy. No confidence. Letting the currents of life toss me around, because I just didn't know how to do otherwise. Even when I joined jiu-jitsu, after 5 years I still didn't feel like it was me. The club, the people, the sport always felt a bit distant although I loved it and dedicated myself to training. I used writing and reading as paths to escape, living vicariously through fiction. Many mornings I didn't even want to get out of bed, because my life seemed so insignificant. I needed routine and consistency just to get through a day. I used to stay home, set roots, and never take chances. Now... I found it. I've never been this passionate about anything else. Not writing, not art, not jiu-jitsu, not camping/hiking. Skydiving has changed how I view life, how I live life, and how I live in life. I don't want to escape life, I wake up each morning excited, and maybe the most amasing thing is that I'm truly satisfied and happy. I feel like the people I've met through skydiving actually like me, and want me around. They aren't just tolerating me; they really mean it. Combine that with the physical act of overcoming fear and learning to skydive, and I've found the confidence to steer myself through the currents of life and do the things I want to do. My inner child who was full of fear, has evolved into an inner gypsy who just wants to get out and see the world and be part of it. Get him to do two jumps, so you can be on the load once and on the ground once! That's what I did last weekend with my hubby. I just had to be on his first load, to see him climb out. Then he did another and I met him on the ground. Best of both worlds! I think he's hooked now... No one else I know has tried it. The only two who say they would, don't live here. Convenient, eh? So I headed for the DZ today. Wrote the test, finished my requirements, and it's official! I passed my 'A' license! Woohoo! I'm set for Arizona in January. Yay! On my second jump, I had God's rays shining on the lake behind me and snow capped mountains in front of me, soft clouds above and multicoloured fall hills below. I took a long moment under canopy to thank all the Powers for the chance to do this most amasing thing. This has been absolutely the best, most fabulous summer of my life. My long time friends are even commenting on how I've become so much more confident and sure of myself. I can't explain it to them; there are no words to describe what skydiving has done for me. Is it possible to explain the moment of first letting go of that plane? Or of choosing to dive out into the wide open air, trusting oneself to defy nature so blatantly? My body is sustained with water and breath; my soul is sustained with air. My only sadness is that it took me so many years to learn this. I feel like I'm on a precipice, with so much still to learn! Normally, I hit the gym 3-5 times a week. These days? Errrgh, nope. Been a long long time away, and I have to get back. I have no excuse, the office where I work is only two blocks away from two different gyms. I used to cycle 2-3 times a week, too, but my bike was run over and I haven't bought a new one. Other things to spend my money on... gear, jumps, beer... Fortunately, my skydiving diet has kept me from gaining weight. I've actually lost a bit this summer. It's a great diet: If I'm jumping, my appetite vanishes and doesn't come back for 2 or 3 days. No matter how hungry I get, I can't eat much at all! I have big intentions on getting a gym pass again, and also getting back into jiu-jitsu over the winter. I've been feeling slugish lately.
