  1. According to a friend of mine who is a geological consultant here "It's less hydraulic fracturing and more wastewater/fluid injection that is likely to be causing increased earthquake activity in the States." They have been trying to get fracking going here in South Africa too, but they are wanting to do so in and around the farm lands and the farmers and communities, as well as most of the public are against it. There were a few good locally produced investigative journalism programs which tackled this and exposed the companies involved lying about the risks. If it wasn't a danger to underground water, then companies would not be spending so much trying to make it 'less dangerous'. Oil companies trying to be more eco-friendly is pretty much an admission than there are risks with what they are doing. The risks are there, whether or not the negative impacts possible have been fully felt yet is another question, but it could happen and when it does it may well be too late. I bet there are a large number of geologists getting some nice cash deposits from oil companies for saying it's safe though.
  2. ^This. Well, considering we're the most destructive of the species, one could argue we are excluded from it in a special way. The special way that we are dumbest shit of all animals, dragging our species and every other species down with us.

  6. Oh God, what a mess... It looks like different sections of the forums have different limits. Will look at increasing these numbers.
  7. You guys still experiencing problems?

  10. Having had a closer look at the details I am actually confused now. Which section of the site is it that you are having problems uploading images to? Our photo section has a 1mb limit, which is pretty big, while the forums and classifieds have a 300kb limit, which may be a little small, but pretty normal for forum environments.

  12. You're right, these limits are from the days when 100kb was the size of an image coming directly from the camera. I will try get a change to about 400kb.
  13. Damn forum formating making me underscore it and ruining the true ascii skeelz.
  14. Ship reports are were also extremely important in the previous forecasting of hurricanes, BUT - when it approaches the coast, especially a coastline that is densely populated, surface reports and buoy reports are not going to be able to show a clear depiction of any changes in movement or progression of EWRCs. Satellite is vital in following EWRCs, and eye wall replacement cycles are still very much a mystery and a lot of research still needs to be done into their duration. It's just not practical these days to even consider that bouy, ship and swell data would be sufficient to forecast hurricanes or issue warnings. You would need to evacuate the whole east coast for a storm that could hit anywhere from S. FL to New York. And with the EWRC, it is a vital part of predicting the strength of a hurricane. It may appear to be weakening due to surface reports, but quality satellites will be able to better show a secondary eyewall forming and a following reintensification. A days warning is most certainly not enough, and the warnings then were also inaccurate. For example, the wind radius of a hurricane changes vastly between storms and so does the speed, and given that they are constantly changing in both these aspects, a storm that could be moving 12mph and have a wind radius of 200 miles, in 12 hours could be moving at 20mph and have a radius of 300 miles of hurricane force winds. It's all about continuing to advance the technology, both model algorithms and satellite. Personally I'm an obsessive model watcher so I favour model data, but wouldn't say one or the other. Imagine in 1900 if they had said "Well now we got warnings up in a day, excellent... Now we can relax and not do everything we can to better it."
  15. In regards to Satellite vs Radar - There is too much focus solely in this thread on supercells and tornadoes. What about hurricanes? Hurricanes are far more costly in general than tornadoes, and hurricanes are almost only monitored via satellite. Radar is useless in hurricane forecasting as it will need to be hours from landfall before US radar picks it up. But advances in satellite can help in recognizing patterns like EWRC (Eyewall Replacement Cycles) and aid in the forecasting of the storms. While it is radar and spotters and not satellite that is used when issuing tornado warnings, you need to look at the bigger picture. When forecasting and issuing warnings or watches, you need as much data as you can get. Satellite is very useful. But I think satellite is definitely more used in hurricanes. Remember that climate research is extremely important to the accuracy of weather models. Particularly medium to long range models used by agriculture.

Then you clearly haven't seen the pictures of her pretending to each a giant black penis shaped cake. If anything was going to cause her to choke...

    A fair conclusion.

  19. I guess I should specify what I meant by 'in range'. I was thinking a couple of feet. The point being not everyone's reaction is going to be to run.
  20. I made no claim to know what went on, but I am saying that even if what Zimmerman claims is true on the basic level (that he followed the kid and was was then hit), the actions of assaulting him would be completely justified. And that chances are most people would do the same thing, either run or try to defend themselves.
  21. Just thought you should know that it's not the moral compass in America that's different. That's pretty consistent globally, the thing that sets it apart from other countries is that other countries tend to not be so prejudice towards these so-called moral dilemmas. Where you and many Americans fear the pride and outward display shown by homosexuals, many other countries embrace their freedom to make their own choices. You can stop replying to me too then since I'm in South Africa, but we have an even more religious, conservative Christian state than America does (around 80%) and the feelings towards homosexuals here echo that of yours in general it feels.
  22. No more than any other relationship creates. Hahaha, wow... Just, wow... So then God is to blame for any militant extremist activity from other Christians, because if the religion didn't exist they wouldn't be able to use it as an outlet for their crazy. Hell, why we are at it. Let's blame the Holocaust on the existence of the Jews! If they hadn't been there, that problem wouldn't have existed! It's totally their fault! You mean back to the good old days right? Where we weren't all tainted by the disgusting and unacceptable things like homosexuality, or blacks being able to vote, or woman's rights... OH IF ONLY we were back in those good ol days.
  23. There was no self-defense, no matter what one may say went down. Whether he hit Zimmerman or not is irrelevant. I highly suspect that if you're unarmed walking down a road and some guy starts following you with a gun, you will either A) Try to run, or B) Let him get close enough and then look to defend yourself using force. The option of A and B differs between people, but when someone has a gun, running is likely to be less effective if you're already within range. If you think they're wanting to rob you and you think you can disarm them, many people would opt for option B. I find it slightly humorous how the people who are trying to argue self-defense don't seem to think that it's self-defense when someone hits an armed person when they approach you in a street at night. I can assure you that in that situation most will be thinking the armed stranger approaching you is putting you under threat.
  24. It shouldn't do that, but it can happen. We recently did a server upgrade and had an issue with the server clock which also could be a factor if the ad was posted during the migration.
