How about this instead. When we get definitive answers, all the BS speculation is deleted. I honestly think that we can learn from the "what if" discussion, I certainly have. Maybe that diminishes over time for experienced jumpers but, as a newb, I can certainly say that it's interesting and informative to explore the possibilities. -

When it comes to opinion yes, but we're talking about agreeing on a landing direction, that's not an opinion. Which way to land *may* be and I'd certainly defer to a more experienced skydiver if they said one way or the other but asking the question doesn't require 1000+ jumps, nor does taking the initiative to establish a pattern before leaving the ground (or whatever is the preferred method at the DZ). Often, if you wait for the experienced people to say something about it, you won't get an answer. Experienced people (in anything) often assume a lot more about how stuff works because they know so it's never clearly stated by them because it's so obvious. For other people on the load it may not be obvious and therefore needs to be discussed & agreed upon. Check my jump numbers, you can bet your ass I'm going to ask about exit order and landing direction and if the experienced people don't want to speak up then I'll say something.

I've had a spinning mal & was under my reserve by ~1900. The turn that caused it (yes, ) was started at 3, the radio guy (all but AFFI) said I cut probably about hard deck which is 2500. I had time to evaluate the mal and I decided pretty quick that I wasn't going to be able to deal with it safely & cut. Part of the reason that there's a hard deck is so that people don't go fighting mals into the ground. If you get to your hard deck and you don't have a landable canopy, cut it. It simplifies the equation. A malfunction isn't always black and white but hard deck is. You're not even open at the hard deck on your main. What happens if you have a particularly long snivel and then line twists? Even if you aren't spinning, you still have to kick out of them. By that stage you may be approaching 1500 or lower at which point you may not even get to AAD firing speed in time for it to fire if you do cut away. These safety nets that are in place are there for a reason. Could you get away with it? Sure. When the shit hits the fan *you* have sacked the cards against *yourself*. To respond to the OP: I'd be very concerned about it personally but I doubt it's uncommon. I managed to get down to 4k before pulling on my recurrency this year (Level9) because instead of counting to 4 in my track & pulling I counted to 5 before I realized what was going on and then pulled. Definitely caused by overload in my case. If it'd happened again I'd be considering going back to an AFF level to get help. You're already there, just make sure you focus on the important bit which is pulling, pulling on time & pulling on time and stable.

Your canopy choices and downsize history

Please excuse my noob question. Is everyone reporting their weight & therefore WL as exit weight? I weigh 162 but I'm not sure what my exit weight is with my current rig. In fact, I'm not even sure what my exit weight was (for sure) on my student gear. My guess would be ~30lbs because it's pretty darn heavy (based on discussion with AFFI). If we just assume (only for the moment) that my rig (infinity + PD 160 reserve) weighs 20 - 25 lbs (again, based on discussions with people at my DZ). That puts my WL on my current canopy at about .97. Progression: 1 - 10 Navigator 280 (.67) & Navigator 260 (.73) 11 - 25 Navigator 240 (.79), 220 (.86) & 200 (.97) (Cutaway on 200 jump 12 - self induced line twists & spin ) 26 - 30 Spectre 190 (~.97) I'm not ready right now to go something more aggressive, I'm thinking that'll I'll need to be landing very well and accurately for several more jumps. I am however interested in the seemingly common path of going to slightly over 1 WL at around 45/50 jumps. -
Yeah, not me in any of those videos, it's all Jerm et al. I've posted a video on youtube of how crappy I am if you guys care. It's amusing because I'm jumping with some really really ridiculously good people and I'm not the best. Given my experience they said I was good but it just looks ugly.

I've always thought the reason you don't jump in regular clothing (everyone does) was that it can interfere with your rig - more specifically your handles. I'd guess, as a newb like me, you would want to minimize or remove the chance of that happening because you may not have the awareness to deal with the extra material flapping about the place when you needed your reserve handle.

Thanks for that, I knew there was a way but don't own one so I don't know. I was repeating what others have said are the reasons for not owning an air locked canopy. Actually, I want to get one so don't count me as someone that's against the idea. Rossy's inflatable wing is pretty damn cool actually, interesting idea.

LOL, for sure! We'd undoubtedly all read the first incidents with real concern and discomfort. It is inevitable that technology moves on of course but for what purpose? Competition is certainly one of them. I'd certainly be waiting until the "saving my ass when I screw up" technology caught up though.

If it's internally pressurized I'd presume that there'd need to be some release mechanism before the pressure could equalize, no? The loudest complaint I've heard (maybe I haven't been listening enough) about air locked canopies is that they're a pain to land due to the pressure & subsequently pack. Maybe I'm off base on the assumption that an internally pressurized wing would result in a more extreme version of these problems.

You've echoed what a lot of people have told me and it certainly rings true. I'm thinking about getting a Lotus, not so I can jump in turbulence, that's just silly but so, in the event of unexpected turbulence close to the ground I'm giving myself every chance of making it out the other side. Given the original question, do you think that the Samurai or Vengeance for that matter would be more likely to resist turbulence? Again, nothing is impervious, just airlocks are *meant* to improve your chances.

Samurai? Not that it's a solution to turbulence, may just increase your chances of a safe landing in unexpected turbulence.
