  1. It's my biggest concern regarding digital altimeters. In freefall to me all that matters is the red-line. I don't really care if I'm at 6 or 8k generally. That said, I like my Viso 2 and it is nice under canopy. I have the normal hand mount and was initially putting the rubber loop around my middle finger, but since moved it to my index finger. That improved my ability to read the display tremendously. Have you played around with the mounting? Other jumpers use the elastic mount on their wrist, don't know if that would help as well. I was thinking of trying the wrist or glove mounts but never though of just changing the finer it is looped on. Thanks, I am going to try each one until I get something that works better. It's good just to know that I am not the one who has had an issue like this.
  2. I am a huge fan of anolog... just not under canopy. I know I should be able to use my eyes but I'm not happy with my accuracy yet. Viso seems to help with that for now. I just wish the display was bigger. Too bad they don't make one with numbers twice the normal size like a large text book. ParaSport Altitron. Hugh display and big numbers. i love mine http://www.chutingstar.com/skydive/altitron-digital-altimeter Sweet. I am going to look into this.

  4. I have a Viso II that I used for my last few jumps. I love the display under canopy. In freefall I seem to have trouble reading the left most part of the screen. The rest of the screen looks fine. So when 8.32 is displayed it looks like 3.32. It is better since I ditched my polarized goggles but it still occurs. Anyone else have this problem? Any solutions?
  5. OP: You should use the search function more often. I don't see the reason to buy the I5 except you want a smart reserve and a normal ZP canopy. The 168zpx will fit easily into an I4. I say that because I pack a 188zpx into an I4 without too much trouble. Would you feel comfortable with an optimum 176?? If yes, go for the I4, it's a very nice fit. I did use the search function... that's why I asked the question. There seems to be a wide range of opinions on this. Apparently the ability to get a certain size into the container varies according to humidity or other environmental factors ?? I emailed Aerodyne & am waiting for their answer but I think I'll err on the side of caution. I don't see myself downsizing that much anytime soon. Thanks for the input Wombat.
  6. Does anyone have experience using the Optima II with the LCD? Which is easier to see Optima LED, Optima LCD or the Hypeye LED? http://www.l-and-b.dk/products/accessories#optima_ii
  7. According to their FB page, "Larsen & Brusgaard Quattro= mid summer"
  8. Thanks for clearing that up. Glad I didn't order the I4 yet.
  9. I was thinking of the Smart Reserve 175. I've never flown anything smaller than a Pilot 168. I see someone got his into an I3! ( http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=3725663;search_string=Pilot%20ZPX;#3725663) Get the I5. No need to piss your rigger off or make packing your rig a pain in the ass, just to have it look 'stuffed'. Thanks.
  10. Some where there should be a collection of incident reports for all the instances where the reserve failed to deploy in time after an AAD fired. These reports should indicate the container and reserve combination, and which AAD it had. I would only focus on rigs with an AAD because that will provide as known of a pack opening altitude as possible, as who knows when a jumper with out an AAD pulled the reserve rip cord. If all the rigs had the same AAD in them, then the “actual” activation altitude would need to be looked at, not the altitude that “the AAD thought it was at”. Now the AAD manufacturers will point to the containers, and that would be supported if there were different AADs used…SO… If the rigs had different AADs in them, then not only do we need to verify that the AADs are firing at the proper AGL altitude, but additionally, were the reserve “systems” of those rigs capable of operating according to the TSO that they were issued under. Great point. Does the USPA compile data like this? Sounds like you could run a report if you have all of that data in a spreadsheet somewhere.

  12. I want to get a Pilot 168 ZPX. I was going to get an I5 to go with it but I read on a post here that it will fit into an I4! How tight of a fit would that be? I'm sure packing would be more annoying. I am also assuming a higher chance of pilot chute in tow?
  13. Seems like no one is excited about this. It has the 4th beep in freefall but it also has beeping between the 3rd & 4th beeps which you can hear while you are tracking away so you know you din't miss the 4th beep... ehh... so it makes it less likely you miss the 4th beep. I can see why you would not want to upgrade from a Optima II but if you are going to buying your first altimeter, why not buy the Quattro (aside from the fact that it apparently is not being sold yet) ? Sounds like a good product from a solid company. I'd say a visual altimeter is better as the first altimeter. I stand corrected. I meant a first audible altimeter.

  15. Shadle was a member of Navy SEAL Team 6. Video of his friends family: http://www.kpbs.org/news/2013/apr/02/navy-seal-killed-parachute-accident-brett-shadle/
  16. Do you have any pics of illuminated canopies that you can share? I haven't been able to find any. I found these but I was hoping for something better: http://searchlight.anomalyresponse.org/2009/11/breaking-ufos-over-east-side-of.html I wonder what Team Fastrax was using to illuminate their canopies? It must have been bright to cause so many UFO reports. I understand that it must be difficult to take a picture like his but there must be some out there.
  17. RIP to a real american hero. I have read that the incident was due to a mid air collision during parachute operations. I have also heard it was a free fall accident. Anyone have any more info? http://www.nypost.com/p/news/national/parachute_accident_claims_life_of_hnemQQ4vgjNXtn8UrDuZ6L
  18. I just got a visio2. I jumped with it three times yesterday. My last jump was just a belly dive with a 10sec track. It said my highest speed was 169mph. Is this my vertical speed? How accurate is this? Does this indicate a poor track position? I was under the impression that during a good track your vertical speed will slow as your horizontal speed increases.
  19. That makes sense. I look forward to the documentary. I guess that's what I was hoping for. Video that approaches the clarity & resolution that I see on sub 15k ft dives. I've seen some really clear videos from people with chest mounted cameras. I really want to see some of these clips in the documentary. I have also seen some pretty crappy video on HALO jumps on youtube. Is that from condensation on the camera lens? I'm sure the Redbulll team took this into account. What did you want him to do - turn points as he hit mach 1.2? No. just clearer / closer footage of what he did.
  20. .... I guess I'll just never develop this holy fear of cameras that some have. badass
  21. Ok. Clearly I stand corrected. But just to be clear, I was just asking about which finished video looked better. I guess they did have alot more time to finish off the cgi. Most of the real video left alot to be desired for me. Most of the freefall had pretty poor resolution. I suppose I was hoping for more high res clips from cameras mounted on him.
