Has this scam cost you personally? Every $0.01 that goes to organized religion is $0.01 that could have gone into something productive for society. In a very real sense we all pay the cost. I just returned from Peru. In Cusco alone there is a cathedral with $millions worth of gold and silver in its various chapels, in a city that has hundreds of thousands of people living in grinding poverty. Of course...but with christianity, I believe the change is a byproduct of faith, it's not the reason for faith...well, maybe initially, but as one matures in the faith they have a tendency to realize that's it not "all about me." Evangelicals today seem to embrace the idea of a "man centered" theology where God is viewed as some type of utilitarian genie there to fulfill all of our whims...but I think the healthy approach is a "God centered" theology where it starts with a realization of our own depravity and a true desire to appreciate and establish a spiritual connection/relationship with God who we feel is self evident within us. Now, the repentance and obedience that is necessary to have this connection is what leads to a changed life - sometimes the change is unexpected and nothing as anticipated.
