Nice PA "The ground does not care who you are. It will always be tougher than the human behind the controls." ~ CanuckInUSA

This is a chat forum. The idea is that you post stuff and then people comment/discuss. No one said you had to post it. "The ground does not care who you are. It will always be tougher than the human behind the controls." ~ CanuckInUSA

Assuming you're not a troll: Why? What do you want from a canopy? You say you are "about to jump a crossifire2", but you don't seem to know anything about it. Maybe completing your profile would gain you some more realistic answers. "The ground does not care who you are. It will always be tougher than the human behind the controls." ~ CanuckInUSA

Non x-braced elliptical canopies
DocPop replied to danielcroft's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Dave and Ian Thanks to you both for your explanations. I guess there is no one rule (like most of skydiving) where X is safer than Y. I posted what I did above from my own perspective which is that I would rather make my turn nearer the top of the performance envelope and "force" it down on double fronts than reduce my margin for error and have to dig out. For me this means I like a divier canopy. I recognize that this may not be the most efficient way to make the turn, but I am currently working on safety rather than wringing every drop of performance out of my swoop. This may be due to a low turn (90) I made on my Sabre2 and the resulting "Oh shit" and painful bounce. Or maybe I am just a pussy! Either way, I recognize that not everyone approaches learning to swoop in the same way. Hell, I may even be wrong - It could happen!! Your answers were both very informative and I too like the discussion of the nuances of canopy flight. "The ground does not care who you are. Non x-braced elliptical canopies
DocPop replied to danielcroft's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
You're cooler when you toss a bomber swoop, hitting the same gates and going past the punks who downsized too fast too soon on your "uncool" canopy! Not to undermine your advice, but wouldn't a canopy with a longer recovery arc be a safer option for learning to swoop? Assuming, of course, that the pilot has enough sense to do some drills up high to work out what likely altitude loss in a turn is likely to be on a new wing before bringing it down low. "Performance enveloping" was discussed recently in a thread and although I knew what was meant, I had never heard that term before. Perhaps that is something that senior jumpers should be pushing more when us new guys change wing. "The ground does not care who you are. This sort of reply is typical of you. You come back with a one-liner answer without trying to figure out what the OP really wants/needs. What if they are really trying to work on freeflying, or to get their freefall time up to go for an AFF rating? To the OP: if money is an issue, try asking about jump packages. Some DZs will give you a discount if you buy a set number of jumps up front. "The ground does not care who you are. It will always be tougher than the human behind the controls." ~ CanuckInUSA

50 jumps jumping a 155 Rage (150 Katana) raising concern
DocPop replied to andrewfarris's topic in The Bonfire
You are fucking around with someone's life. Wise the fuck up. You don't know this guy, and you probably have never jumped a Katana or a Rage. You say a lot of stupid shit on here but something like this could really end in tears. "The ground does not care who you are. It will always be tougher than the human behind the controls." ~ CanuckInUSA -
Mine are better than yours. In that case - ladies first! Frankly I am not going to humor him. "The ground does not care who you are. It will always be tougher than the human behind the controls." ~ CanuckInUSA

It seems like nobody else agrees with you. On this or 99% of all your other crap. If you want a real PA, I can PM you one. I have plenty. "The ground does not care who you are. It will always be tougher than the human behind the controls." ~ CanuckInUSA

Just got mine yesterday and although I haven't jumped it, I have to say it is incredibly light and comfortable. Nice work, Bonehead! "The ground does not care who you are. It will always be tougher than the human behind the controls." ~ CanuckInUSA

Personal Responsibility in Jumping

Not that I'm biased, but what does her nationality have to do with this? Diet... Bad teeth? strange accent? Yank chicks love it. "The ground does not care who you are. It will always be tougher than the human behind the controls." ~ CanuckInUSA -
Do you think was due to line strip? Were his locking stows very loose when single stowed? This is the only explanation I can think of for why it might have worked. "The ground does not care who you are. It will always be tougher than the human behind the controls." ~ CanuckInUSA
-
My own reasoning: I use large bands for the locking stows and small ones elsewhere. I do not double wrap anything because if the d-bag is the right size the locking stows will be under tension anyway. If I downsize and the d-bag gets a little loose, I'll probably move to small stows on the locking stows and keep them single wrapped. Although my non-locking stows are not tight around the (HMA) lines below the cascades it does not concern me because these do not do much except keep the lines neat during the packing process (think of reserve deployment systems). "Line dump" doesn't cause hard openings (although it may cause other issues such as tension knots), but "bag strip" can so I do want my locking stows under tension to avoid an out of sequence deployment. New edition of 'Huckleberry Finn' to lose the 'n' word
DocPop replied to quade's topic in Speakers Corner
That goes both ways. It's the wilful lack of desire to invest enough in a dialog to either understand if something was intended to be offensive, or to understand if a choice of words is likely to be offensive. To say it's all on the offended is bullshit. And I agree that bowdlerizing Huck Finn is one of the stupidest things I ever heard of. However, the dialog is going to mostly get them made fun of, which is a good thing Wendy P. Wendy - I quite agree that there are people who willfully try to offend, which is why I said "It is not the word in isolation that does any harm.". It is also possible to use quite innocuous words to deliberately cause offense, and that is not OK either. "The ground does not care who you are. It will always be tougher than the human behind the controls." ~ CanuckInUSA -
New edition of 'Huckleberry Finn' to lose the 'n' word
DocPop replied to quade's topic in Speakers Corner
It is not the word in isolation that does any harm - it is the willful desire to be offended that causes problems. Some people are just looking for reasons to be outraged. Personally I think being forced to replace "nigger" with "the 'n' word" is a quite preposterous over reaction. I mean nobody would be up in arms if someone called me a "cracker" or a "honky", would they? Everyone should just settle down and look for reasons to calm down rather than excuses to be upset. Try like this. 1. Do a normal packjob up until you have it cocooned. 2. Make the LARGER S-fold only and put it in the D-bag. Ensure you maintain control of the lines & slider while you do this. 3. While keeping the slider in place and the tail wrapped around the lines, make the second (smaller) s-fold inside the d-bag. 4. Close d-bag as usual. There are threads with links to pictures of this but if you can't be bothered to search for them, neither can I. "The ground does not care who you are. In an attempt to get back on topic. I think people get upset about faith for a number of reasons, including: - when it is rammed down people's throats whether or it is wanted. - the fact that by it's very nature, faith is required as an alternative to proof, and many people have an "evidence-based" outlook on life. - because many atrocities are committed in the name of faith. My own opinion is that there is no solid evidence that God exists, or that He/She doesn't - therefore having a solid belief in either position is not supported. My leaning is towards not believing, but I am prepared to be proved wrong. I don't see a parallel between this question and that of homophobia and racism. It requires no faith to know that gays and blacks exist, it is just a question of whether one victimizes them or not. And personally I think homosexuality is a lifestyle choice - but that doesn't make it any more wrong than other lifestyle choices such as being a hippy or a vegetarian. Or a Catholic for that matter!
