Would you say that a water landing with a modern wingsuit is not survivable? If vertical speed could be brought to 0 within 30' to 50' above the water, wouldn't there still be enough time to slow down some? As Lurch pointed out, at high speeds you just skip on the surface. I've done it too, and it was rough, but I lived. I've swan dived from 85' and from 40' with 100 lbs of gear on. Water can be hard, I know, but it's not like dirt. Sorry to be repetitive, but you haven't really addressed the water landing idea, which I think is the most likely option for it to happen. But what do I know? -

Thank you for your opinion; it does give me more doubts about this, but would you absolutely rule out the possibility of a water landing? Why, vertical speed, horizontal speed, or both? I think 30 MPH into water is survivable. Wouldn't you be able to reduce your vertical speed to that, or less, before touchdown? At the same time, horizontal speed can be reduced quite a bit with a flair. If anyone could do it, you could, in my opinion, so if you don't think it can be done then it can't. But what do I know? -

Vertical impact speed less than 30 mph is survivable, and attainable. I suggest a lot of training to maximize flairing and learning just how much air you need to come out at the rtght place. Modern gadgets would help. Properly timed, a flair could pretty much bring vertical speed to zero, and kill a lot of forward speed too. I admit that base jumpers would have a better feel for this, and I'm talking out of my ass. I still think it can be done. But what do I know? -

Nope. The parachute didn't do much, but it did cause him to hit feet first, and was a factor in his survival. To count it should be without any parachute at all. A ramp is OK, but my method doesn't use one. I'm thinking a kevlar chest shield with an inch or two of padding, a big floaty wingsuit, and a well timed flair over water, would make this a realistic way to do it. Either a flair to stall, then dive it in, or my preferance, a seaplane type landing. I can see this happening every weekend when somebody gets it. But what do I know? -

I participated in a 4 way scrambles competition that welcomed new jumpers, (I had about 80.) It was a lot of fun, and a great learning experience. Thanks Raeford, for a super time. Elsinore offered a canopy course that came at just the right time on my learning curve. They also had the skills camp, instructor types out looking for newbies like me, with a brand new A license, to jump with; basically free coach jumps. A place that seems genuinely interested in newer jumpers, and has implemented good plans for them. Perhaps most important of all is a friendly bunch of folks like at Gold Coast. Everybody has fun at my favorite place, no matter how many jumps they have. +1 on the Southern Hospitality.

No problem bro. I agree with you as far as people not being familiar with their equipment. Since I don't pack every time, I do make sure to give mine a good inspection at least once by bringing it home unpacked. After looking it over real well, I pack it myself. I don't think I do any better or worse than the packers, but it's not brain surgery. I too am annoyed by lazy rich people; the most annoying part is not being one myself. But what do I know? -

Oh really? Well, so sorry to get your panties bunched up. Here is my deal. I'm 58 years old. I jump in Mississippi, where in case you don't understand what that means, it's 98 degrees and 98 percent humidity in the summer, I can jump and pack, like one time, or jump all day, with other people packing for me. I know how to pack, and do so every chance I get. The people that pack for me do a good job, and I pay them for that. I give them a tip too. When it's cooler, I pack. When it's hot I don't. Sorry to annoy you, but not really. If I get a mal, I won't be on here crying and blaming the packers. So what do you say to that? Edited, but I'm not telling you why. But what do I know? -

Something that has been discussed on other threads, but not this one so far: When you land hold on to the toggles and then stow them without letting them twist up. When I do that and then check at the end of the day there are very few if any twists. Be careful in the landing area doing that and if it's busy just stick them in the keepers and move out. Other things in this thread are good advice that could have played a part. Careful packing, seperating the line groups, untwisting brakes, any one may have prevented your problem. Just try and get everything as clean and straight as you can and you will have less chance of it happening again, I think. But what do I know?

Gold Coast Skydivers in MS hosts a HALO operation that goes to 30K. Oxygen is required and provided, as well as fighter pilot style helmets and o2 masks. The jumps aren't cheap, but then again, it's not your average skydive. I've done others to 18k with o2 on the plane, but that was not much different than a regular jump. But what do I know?

I think I could fly past people under canopy at 50' away all day long and not pose any danger to them. I'm no expert, but it's not that hard. I also think that if I pass anybody more than 300' away they shouldn't gripe about it. I personally don't go closer than 300' to tandems, and think that even expert flyers shouldn't go any closer than 50'. Some may want to double my figures and I'm ok with that. I don't agree with anyone needing a mile of clearance. I doubt they can see that far anyway. But what do I know?

How would you compare that flight to if you had used an XS? Could you go as far, as fast, and what do you notice is different in flying the two? But what do I know?

I agree, in fact all that happened is a failure in the belt. Even though mine fit well, if the buckle broke or slid off the webbing, my pants would fall off too. I don't find this a flaw with mine, but do think the belt buckle could be better. I've had a bit of sliding occour, and any damage to the plastic could cause the buckle to fail, especially with the added stress of a loose fit. I do think that what was provided is adaquite, it just requires attention on the part of the jumper, and should not be used if any problems are seen. I wear cool boxers, but still... But what do I know? -

Exactly what part(s) failed? Did the belt break; buckle come apart? If more than one failure point, what do you think broke first? Losing a lot of weight like that would certainly have an effect on the fit of the suit, and a large air pocket inside could increase the stress a lot. My PF pants do fit tighter on me. No problem with them after maybe 50 - 75 jumps by me and others. Good job on an interesting jump. Really curious about the belt. But what do I know? -

So, pretty much every jump that you plan and execute with another person? >>> Yes. Like coach jumps, jumps where you just have someone filming you? >>> Yes. Where is the line drawn?
