i'm not sure about automotive turbos, but big truck engine (cummins, cat, detroit, volvo) turbos do not have bearings, they have bushings that ride on a cushion of high pressure oil. if the motor is off, no oil pressure, metal to metal contact between the bushing and its housing. turbos spin at amazing rpms ( i can't remember the numbers, but i believe it was 100,000+ rpm) and if you just shut the engine off without a cooldown, that turb is still spinning without adequate lubrication. so sue me, i'm canadian, we're behind the times a little. last night was the beer episode of the osbournes to air in canada, and it was completely un-beeped. i think it was beer, it was the one where they were moving into their house. they're all nuts! can't wait for the next episode.
