  1. Its a shame he's not here to bask in all the attention. He's currently freeflying his ass off in Sweden, so we should keep this till he re-appears.... Maybe we could all chip in and buy him one of these....http://www.smltechnologies.com/newsite/wristwatch.html -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 2. "Or, you need to have been active in last 48 hours to access a forum." Okay, I'm not sure how this would work, so not sure I like the idea of this. Lets say you are away for a weekend, would that imply you can't access the incident forum till say tuesday night at the earliest? I'm concerned that we'd lose the 'real-time' information flow, which could be critical in controlling equipment / procedure failure incidents. I'd rather have a hundred bad press reports than a single avoidable injury to one of our own. Lets face it, the rest of the world thinks we are all crazy, daredevil, surfing, bank robbing, binge drinking, party maniac, drug smuggler, dropout dudes (and dudettes)anyway (Hollywood says so). If I'm reading the reason for change right, this has all been driven by UK press quoting directly from the incidents forum. Fortunately instances like this are all too rare, and I think we are in danger of 'throwing the baby out with the bath'. How about this, everyone who posts or has a genuine interest in incidents probably has a licence number of some sort, would it be possible to have access to incidents linked to the completion of a licence number field in your profile? Of course you could still enter fictitious license details, but this is surely better than being denied access to potentially vital information. If the incidents forum didn't even appear to people without a complete license field, then curious press people wouldn't look for it. It may even be useful also to link this 'shut out' mechanism to accessing people's profile data? That way direct quotes will be limited to the likes of "a jumper known only as 'Aggiedave' had the following comment...."Asshats". As opposed to say...David Lund of College Station Texas was quoted on the popular dropzone.com internet information portal as saying "Asshats"..... -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 3. "It's an ip5 and it's a good price for being brand new." To cut a long story short Pyke, don't buy one mate. The only advantage appears to be their size. I'm in the market for a new PC series cam to replace my ageing PC7, and I'm NOT looking at the IP series. They record data in a format different from their miniDV cousins, so are incompatible for direct transfer between your friends. They are also about as much use as a chocolate fireguard with my current edit setups. I hear the on/off buttons are on the wrong side for most standard side mount setups. Basically, they are more hassle than they are worth. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 4. "The Clash - London Calling." Joe Strummer, sorely missed. But at least he also left us Bankrobber, and Should I Stay or Should I go.
  5. There is no such law as 'trespass' in Scotland. Before my southern friends chip in, this is one area where Scottish and English laws are different. There is 'willful damage to property', which I'm guessing a skydiver in distress doesn't qualify for. That said we still get farmer Mcnasties, but also a fair amount of farmer Mcnices too. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 6. Och Hans, there's stuff like this lying around all over the world, they keep showing up. In fact there were a couple in Aberdeen last month. But this is leading me uncomfortably close to cluster bomblets, landmines, depleted uranium, and other assorted nasties that nobody wants to clear up either.......... I say we should deploy the cheapest form of ordinance disposal, and that is to to just leave the stuff where it is till kids start playing with it. They'll soon learn. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 7. Yes FAI is international, but qualification requirements are set by individual countries, administered by the national aero clubs for each country.....But its all about to change. This from the FAI website. "At it's Annual Conference in San Diego, USA in January 2001, the International Parachuting Commission agreed on a world-wide standard of International Parachuting Certificates of Proficiency (commonly known as 'licences'). This agreement arose from the fact that the requirements for the FAI Parachuting A, B, C, D, etc. CoP's varied widely from country to country, and also because a large number of prominent parachuting nations issued no FAI Certificates or "licences" at all. It was concluded that, particularly the traveling parachutist and all drop zone operators, would benefit if one standard of FAI Certificate of Proficiency were applied throughout the world. Although FAI member national parachuting associations will still be able to issue "national", as opposed to "international" Certificates of Proficiency" in parallel, thus enabling them to create their own 'licencing standards' applicable in their own country, the FAI International Certificates is intended to be the benchmark for world-wide recognition. FAI member nations are encouraged to meet or exceed the recommended FAI International Standards, and drop zones throughout the world are urged to welcome visiting parachutists whose level of expertise in sport parachuting is certified by their FAI member nation through the official FAI INTERNATIONAL CERTIFICATE OF PROFICIENCY'. The revised FAI Programme of the 'International Certificate of Proficiency' (CoP) was officially launched in August 2002 when the new certificates became available at the FAI headquarters in Lausanne. The National Parachuting Associations and Aero Clubs of FAI Member nations, are now requested to place orders for the new FAI Certificates of Proficiency, and begin to issue these documents to their members. The standards for each level of CoP (A, B, C, or D) are printed in the four official FAI languages (English, French, Russian and Spanish). Each CoP booklet will require a photograph of the applicant, and his/her signature. The issuing national association will certify the qualifications of the applicant by placing a 'sticker' for each level of Certificate in the appropriate space. The numbering system is based on the 'country codes' of the International Olympic Committee. Thus, for example, the CoP code for Kenya is KEN, for Ireland is IRL, etc. Only one number is issued for each person holding a CoP. Thus, applicant John Smith from Kenya would, for instance, hold CoP number KEN 0005. When he was issued his CoP, his A level qualification was signified by an appropriate sticker. Once he meets the qualifications for the Category B or higher level, his CoP booklet (No. KEN 0005) would be endorsed with a 'B' sticker, etc. The International Parachuting Commission of the FAI encourages all member nations to support this programme and make an effort by 2003 to either meet or exceed the standards agreed by the FAI member nations. All national associations are urged to make available the new FAI International Parachuting Certificates of Proficiency to its members. In this context, it is noted that several FAI member countries have already begun to issue the new certificates (e.g. Kenya, Ireland) and that substantial interest has been shown by Canada, Estonia, New Zealand and other countries. " http://www.fai.org/parachuting/certificates_proficiency/ I'm guessing existing FAI licenses will remain valid for a while/indefinitely.... -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 11. Its scary, very scary, to think that if if they suspect a package/device, they go blindly poking about with a needle, screwdriver, etc..... Makes a good case for getting hard luggage to ship your rig if it has to go in the hold. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 12. Her name was Vesna Vulvic. More info here http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=267491;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;;page=unread#unread Also if you search here (use the "search posts" button up top) for hypoxia, vesna, etc, you should find enough to get you going....
  13. Hmm, looking at your avatar pic Chris, I'd say the rig is probably to blame. 16. Hey folks calm down, this is a very emotional incident. Its not an incident that could have been avoided, it was a deliberate act, and one that will always be in the back of our minds. And thats just not right, we shouldn't have to worry about our own people doing this to us. If a certain well known skydiver/journalist/Texan hottie is giving you grief via PM, sort it out via PM. Peace out folks.... -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 17. I'm guessing Michael is referring to this post.. ".......... if journalists are quoting stuff from here then we all need to think before they post - cause we all know how journalists fucking twist anything you say to make a story basically sell - they aint into communicating the truth - they are into selling!! " As opposed to his 2 posts in the thread promising torture/pain to the culprit (including a confused reference to the USMC tampering incident), one post lambasting the BPA, and another querying the use of rigger's seals..... Yup, I think we should take his advice and consider carefully what we post. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 20. Well you still one hand free to hold the laser/gun whatever. This whole idea is a wrap waiting to happen. If you've ever done any crew then having a snagalicious thing like a pellet gun or laser pistol on your wrist, probably on a lanyard, then you'll quickly realise that this is probably an idea best kept to the campfire..... -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 22. Yeah, if you can't jump our favourite plane, you can at least order vichy videos and do the skydiver's equivalent of porn!. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 23. "build up my own "weltbild" (sorry, no translation on hand). " "Weltbild" World view/world picture. There isn't really an english one word equivalent. Something like "cosmopolitan outlook" or "global perspective" might fit. I know what you are trying to say though.
  24. 16 way tube out of a herc is the biggest I've heard of. 4 side by side 4s.... When it gets to that stage, a magic carpet is probably a safer bet. You can break single 'wheel' tubes to either a donut (everyone lets go their left or right hand), the spin it. Or one person breaks both grips and you have a cat, which you can track. Then once you have decent speed up, the person on the front front loops, whip lashing the tail into the wide blue yonder. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me.
