It is also a good idea to consider all the surroundings when determining if it is safe jumping in windy conditions. For example at SSL we are blessed with an almost rectangular DZ with no near obstacles (except for the hanger) or trees. Since we are very near the Gulf of Mexico, the wind mostly blows from the South at a fairly constant, or a predictable steadily increasing or decreasing rate. Therefore we can jump in higher winds with the limitation being each canopy's penetration ability. At The Ranch in NY however the landing area if relatively narrow with very tall trees on the North and South sides. Since the DZ is in very hilly terrain, the winds can gust unpredictably. Even 10 mph winds can cause severe rotors off the trees. On 15 - 20 mph days usually the only jumpers will be tandems. The key is know your limits, the maximum penetration for your main, and if you think you shouldn't jump, you probably should ground yourself. Well guys it finally happened...the kids at SSL caught me on Sunday night big time. They had been talking about pieing me for a month after they found out they missed my 100th, 200th, 300th and 400th jumps. Numerous instances on weekends where people said "where did you go last night? we had a pie for you." Heck I thought I had outlasted them...but last night as we were watching videos of the days jumps, Tami asked me if I would look at her cafe tax documents she had received. Although I wanted to get home, I said ok and walked through the hanger and out the South door. With my head down, hat on, and thinking about getting home I never saw the guy standing in the shadows. As I turned right, he blasted me with a chocolate cream pie...full face! And me wearing my long sleeve white Airspeed T...Talk about surprised all I had time to do was blink. It's even on video...thanks a lot Jeff! As I was standing there, out walks Conway. As he looked up and saw me, he got his pie for his 500th. Tom had told him a few minutes earlier to bring old clothes next weekend because they were going to get him Thanks guys! You have all made it more fun than I thought possible just a year ago. Absolutely two different guys. I have jumped with both. Derek is always very safety conscious except for the postage stamp main and the hook. The other guy is very aggressive and downsized faster than his abilities. I refused to jump with him for about six months. It's sad because he is not a bad guy, but will be an "incident" one day.
