  1. Is this journalistic non-sense/Red Bull spin? From http://media.www.bsudailynews.com/media/storage/paper849/news/2008/11/25/News/Bsu-Student.Wins.Red.Bull.extreme.Contest-3561049.shtml And it was AFF rather than a tandem as I found this video Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live
  2. There is a Haagen listed in the exit lineup although whether it's the same one, and whether that was the same line-up for the record dive, I don't know. Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live
  3. The BPA are currently producing a 2009 calendar which goes out with the December magazine. Probably not as big as the PD one, but it's still pretty good and a bit cheaper at £5 ($7.5 + shipping). You'll be able to order it from the BPA shop. 4. Whilst this is a real pain, especially in days of reducing weight allowances on airlines (or rather increased charges for the same allowance), but you can see the point. Stuff could be hidden inside the lead shot. I'm not sure how much useful space you could get out of a 2lb bag and still shield the contents but there you go, it is still a risk, despite other screeners having either missed it, or not thought it as big a deal. When you think about it, it doesn't really make sense to transport high weight generic stuff around like this. Yes, I'd object to wearing someone elses clothes and I'd rather wear my own rig and jumpsuit, but lead is lead. Why does it need to be humped half way round the world (or continent)? The simple solution is for dropzones to provide lead for visiting jumpers. Lead is really cheap isn't it? In rip-off UK it is £2 ($3) per lb, I'm sure it is much cheaper in the US. Buying lead locally has to be cheaper than the fuel cost repeatedly transporting it back and forth. Providing lead for visiting jumpers is a great and simple service that makes visiting a dropzone much easier. I'm sure a dropzone as proactive as Spaceland would be keen to offer such a service? I'll be out there in April for TSR. Any chance you could have such a scheme in place by then Jim? I tell you what, if you can source 2lb bags out there, I'll buy them from you for the event and leave them at the dropzone to get the scheme rolling. 6. I checked, and the EOS Utility does allow setting the time to the second, even on the 350d. So John, how about it? Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live

  10. The Hypoxic Hypeye D Pro is a CamEye equivalent (and then some) indicator that plugs into the AV terminal of your camera. Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live
  11. Yes, you are right. I looked in the file itself rather than using a crappy viewer and could see the time information down to the second. But you still can't set that from the camera (at least not in the 350d or 400d but you can on the 450d http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/0300000933/EOSRXSi-EOS450D_EN.pdf p.20). I guess you have to use the EOS Utility to set the time to the second in cameras below the 450d? It doesn't give a huge amount of detail in the manual (p. 13) Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live
  12. How accurate a time stamp? Would 1 second be enough? I just looked on my 350d and through the on-board control the time can only bet set to the minute. I don't know if it goes anymore granular than that. Looking in the EXIF data, it is recorded to the minute level as well. I don't know if the camera can be altered via computer interface or if better/later models record time to the second. Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live

  15. No, skydiving got me paranoid! When the BPA banned hand cams, there wasn't a lot of explanation as to why. Some time has passed since then and I'd like to be fully appraised of both sides of the argument if it should come up again. Even an altimeter is a potential entanglement hazard! You mentioned complications of the camera I drew attention to but did not qualify your concerns. With my supposition that anything is an entanglement risk, I'm assuming a handcam glove could potentially be released if it did before snagged? With a remote lens, unless the cable has a break point in it somewhere it could be a greater risk because it can't be freed even though it would be a lower entanglement risk. Thinking it through that is the complication I could forsee but since you didn't expand on your statement it's difficult to know if that is what you meant. Incidents like SteveOrino's tandem horseshoe malfunction but unfortunately that is in the recycle bin due to possible legal action. If it sits proud, can it catch the wind? Ever come close to hitting a student in the face with it? Do you check all your handles in freefall when you are doing handcam? Do you release the drogue with the hand that has the cam on it? Agreed. 17. Yeah, why not? It's been done a lot already, using bullet cams plugged into cameras or dedicated decks for some time. The head is not the only place to mount a camera (or lens now). I'm still a bit old fashioned and like my video sidemounted, with my stills on top, and then I don't need a helmet with huge real estate on top. As my DV cameras age, I know that soon I'll have to transition to a HD camera. I know people do, but at the moment, I don't really fancy having the current crop of HD cameras sidemounted as they seem too wide (I realise there is the TG1/3, but that has it's own issue). So I think that in order to step up to HD and keep the stills I'll need a bigger helmet. The HXR-MC1 could be a great solution to that, mounting the lens on my freefly camera helmet alongside the stills without the need to an FTP style helmet. It could also double up a a great hand cam Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live
  18. Hmm, a recording deck coupled with a lens and imaging chip combined in one unit for mounting on a helmet....sounds familiar! :-P Seriously though, similar to Yarak's mounted LCD screen, it could offer some opportunity for viewing what you are shooting in real time. 19. Not sure if I'm understanding you correctly but, since when? It's list on the SkyLeague rules pages There is some talk on this thread about possible small changes being considered at the IPC meeting in January? Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live
  20. It's all about weighing up the risks though. I've never jumped hand cam so educate me. Even if it is fine/"safe", what are the potential issues? Having the extra weight on the hand, extra bulk on the hand when performing drills, the potential for whacking the student in the face with the camera? All these are alleviated. What are the complications? Placing the recording unit and the risk that it may cause injury on landing? Entanglement with the lens makes it more difficult to release if there is no breakaway between the lens and the recording deck? Putting a breakaway in the cable means it could come undone during a jump and not capture any footage. Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live
