  1. Only four people in the air; two students, two experienced jumpers. Light variable winds, an accuracy event and a set landing direction. The winds had shifted 180 degrees from the briefing, Jumper 1 landed according to the windsock in order "not to confuse the students who are briefed to land into the wind". Jumper two landed according to the pattern, in order "not to confuse the students any further, since they are briefed to land according to the pattern". Student 1, who landed third, had adapted his pattern according to the direction set by jumper 1, resulting in a very close call between him and jumper 2 at perhaps 100 feet.. Student 2 landed off, according to the direction set in the briefing. Scary shit.. That they had. It's "the rules over here are that we have a set landing direction" - meaning if you want to land in the main area you stick to that landing direction. You don't like it, you land off. 2. Sounds kinky... "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom
  3. Another painful fact that comes to mind is that our 'elite athletes' train full-time to become good at one skill exclusively, perhaps at the expense of many others - while for the people cited in the example any extrordinary feat they accomplish were all in a day's work... 4. Well, if you're going to point out any mistikes Bill has made, how about the good decision? When in doubt, land it out... "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom
  5. First, I'm used to people asking for a pin check, but meanning a full gear check. I do the same. Reading back, I agree that I worded that post somewhat strongly. With "the way I want" I meant that I will do a full gear check, which includes touching your gear, but (of course) treat it at least as well as my own.
  6. I think I'll stick with mindless divel instead, Bry... My boss might notice if I sit around dribbling mindlessly. EDIT: Besides, even though I ain't single, I'm quite sure that I'd not want to convey that kind of image of myself to my female coworkers. 7. Nope, no blackberry. In fact, I only switched to a phone with one of them new-fangled "colour displays" last june.
  8. I think she should be allowed to wear the tux, but I also think that both sides are way overreacting. What's the big deal? "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom
  9. I'm resurrecting this thread because of the Hawaii incident of 12 october 2009, which also (seems to) deal with a misrouted bridle. In that thread, Yoink posted: That got me thinking: Once you ask me to give you a pincheck (gearcheck) I'll handle it the way I want. That includes yanking your cheststrap to check the routing. That lesson was driven home early in my HI-training, when my instructor asked me to give a student (who was geared up only for the occasion) a pin check. He had deliberately misrouted the chest strap in a way that *looked* very plausible. Since the student in question was a girl, I inspected her chest strap visually and missed the routing problem. When I OK'd her, the instructor hooked a single finger behind her chest strap and undid it, without saying a word. Had I let her jump like that, I would have killed this student. Of course the situation is slightly different with experienced jumpers - YOU and YOU alone are responsible for your own safety. But. Would anyone be able to sleep very well at night thinking "if only I'd done a full gear check on them, I would have caught that [insert error] and saved their life.."? 10. Painfully lame joke: Have you heard about the frog physisian? His patient croaked, so he got sued for being a quack. Oh, yeah.. tell us more. "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom

  12. I've been called a lot of things in my life - but responsible and sensible? I'm a skydiver, remember? "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom
  13. Great post! Ooh.. ouch. You got me coming AND going. I'm stupid, rude and on meds...but that doesn't mean I don't care. Hang in there VB! "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom
  14. Morning. I really really wish I hadn't looked at that pic... I suddenly find myself yearning for Februari when I'll finally go skiing again. "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom

  16. And where did you pick up this piece of information? http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=14291990 Sparky Within context, Johan is right: Hence, the SL-round cannot have a piggyback reserve if you want to jump it without an AAD, under Dutch regulations but must have a chest mounted reserve. 17. The S/L round cannot have a piggyback reserve, it must have a belly reserve. Well, yes; VB would have to talk to Willem.. but I was purely talking about AAD regulations, not about whether VB could use his own rig. Or did I misinterpret some obscure regulation? 18. Over here it's not a jump# requirement, but to jump without a cypres you must either have a C-licence, do a static-line round jump, or have a Vigil (I or II), argus, FXC12000, Sentinel MK2, Kap3, Heightfinder, EFA or Astra, the latter 9 of which must be turned on and function within the specs set by the manufacturer and the RDAA AND have approval of a licenced RDAA instructor. But since you don't fall under Dutch rules and regulations, all I can say to you (not being hindered by knowledge of the Swiss rules) is: Knock yourself out. Edited to specify Vigil: I or II "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom
  19. By the way, the best skydiving scene has to be in the movie "Top Secret". It's just as retared as any Hollywood skydiving scene, but it's saving grace is that the producers intended it that way. 20. Yes, well... I paid over 1000 euros for my brand spanking new AAD. Might as well get my money's worth by breaking another chainlink downstream of altitude awareness.
  21. Write your problems to Dr. Shah and he'll tell you just how to save that relationship or how to pick up that hot guy/girl you were always interested in but never had the guts to ask out. Dear Shah, I am a never-married male in my late 20s. For almost 2 years I had a terrible crush on my best friend, an extraordinarily beautiful woman. Even when she became an Air Force Officer and we had to do the long distance thing for over a year we remained very close and would visit each other frequently. We both have decent incomes and would split the cost so it was never a financial burden. We got along great and I fell deeper and deeper in love. I gave my heart completely to her. I wanted to marry her. I still do. At the end of August, I flew down to see her for 10 days. We had a wonderful time and I felt closer to her than ever. Everything seemed perfect - But why can't I find the words to ask her? Around the eigth day of my visit I did notice a change in her. She became distant, but I just thought it was stress from her career or something. She would hold my hand but not look at me and she just seemed... so distant and sad. I asked her if something was wrong but I couldn't get a straight answer, she just said it was stress and fatigue. A few days after I got home I get a call from her. She's crying. (she NEVER cries!) She says she hates to do this to me...but she just doesn't feel the same way about me anymore. I was devastated and asked her "why?". She says she has no idea why her feelings changed and that they changed in a matter of about 2-3 days. But she has NO explanation for why she feels this way so suddenly. The whole time she was telling me this, I could see her face since it was via video-chat...I still cry everyday thinking about it almost a month later. We haven't had much contact since then and I don't know what to do. The few times I have spoken to her in the past month , I've had a hard time keeping my emotional cool. She's coming home to see her family over Christmas and I'll have the opportunity to see her then. I'm hoping we can talk face to face and maybe when she's had 4 months to miss me, her perspective will change. But what should I do/say when I do see her? Should I contact her 'til then, or just cut all contact and wait 'til Christmas? I've been avoiding making any contact with her for the most part since I only seem to make myself look foolish. I love this woman with all my heart and desperately want her in my life again. 22. Something I've seen in a few of my female friends: He never dated her because she waited for him to ask her. "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom
  23. That would only be fair if both canopies had also the same size. Else you'd get a difference due to any thermal activity that might be going on. The larger canopy would surely benefit more from any updrafts. 24. Fourt of July this year - first time I put out a SL-student. Had they been looking at me instead of the ground I bet I'd never would have forgotten the look on their face.
