  1. "Could you slow down just a bit? I'm spilling my soup."
  2. Sounds like the SOP of a few SC regulars. How dare you insinuate such a thing! Nobody here would ever stoop so low!
  3. The Bill of Rights has nothing to do with this story. Someone in the media saw the list and decided to embellish the facts with a bit of fiction. The only way our rights were involved was someone abusing the right of free speach by telling falsehoods. The FBI asked universities to watch for these signs, and most will ignore the request. Those that do what the feds asked will soon realize the rediculous nature of the request. No new laws were passed, no executive order given, nothing. Just a request.
  4. Those things listed as items the FBI wants to stop are just a list of acivities for university people to watch for as possible indicators of espionage, not things the FBI wants to prohibit. My feeling is that the univeristy people will ignore the feds on this, just as it should be. Most of those activities are an important and integral part of graduate and undergraduate student life. The only thing in that list I don't do on a regular basis is traveling abroad.
  5. Making Tequila Sunrises one evening and ran out of OJ, so we used Orange Crush instead. Very delicious substitute!
  6. So fucking what? If the best objection you have to the SI system is that "it's arbitrary" then you really don't have much of a case, do you? There are just 7 base units (arbitrary quantities, if you will) in the SI system. There are dozens of arbitrary quantities in the Imperial system. How many fathoms in a rod, pole or perch? How many minims in a drachm? How many troy ounces in a hundredweight? How many short tons in a long ton? How many square chains in an acre? I know! 42! The answer is 42! (I saw that in a movie so it HAS to be right.)
  7. Looks like you best get to Washington and make sure he follows those rules.

  9. No. My not supporting government funded stem cell research has nothing to do with how the President thinks but I agree that there are some who do feel that way. Oh, ok then let me re-phrase the question. Could you look a family member in the eye who has a problem that could be resolved through stem cell research and say "I am sorry, I do not support this."? I could never look at anyone that is in that situation and feel good about myself. I support efforts and research into cures and treatments for specific conditions such as Cystic Fibrosis. CF is the genetic desease with the most promise for finding a cure, yet all public funds for research into a cure was pulled years ago. Stem cell research has not produced a viable cure or treatment for any desease or condition as of yet (that I know of) so my support goes to research that I know helps people. When research finds a definite use for stem cells in treating people then I will support public funding, but not until then.

  11. Clickied it for ya. One of the professors deeply involved in that project spoke at Ohio State a few months ago but I had a class and couldn't attend (believe me, I tried!).
  12. Everyone has their reasons for supporting or not supporting research in any given area. It has been said that 70% of the public support federal dollars being made available for stem cell research, but I wonder how many people support that position only because Bush does not. The government doesn't doesn't shell out money to every researcher that wants it, not should they.
  13. Taking a chicken on a skydive is no more cruel than chasing it. Chickens have, like, three brain cells. One for eating, one for making little chickens, and one for running away from anything that isn't another chicken.
  14. You mean water of a specific volume at a specific temperature under a specific pressure. In other words . . . something that is completely arbitrary because it is a circular dependancy. SOooooo...they had to change it...which only points out how arbitrary it was to begin with yet again. See; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilogram Yep. Kilogram is based on H2O at standard atmosphere. Why? Because it is easily duplicated in virtually any lab around the world, thus allowing any competent scientist to establish a standard in his/her lab that is consistent with other labs around the world. From reading some posts it seems any unit of measure that is based on anything is "arbitrary". Units have to be based on something, what better than something found everywhere? Better than a unit of length based on a dead guys thumb. Units based on nothing are, well, ...nothing.
  15. Actually, 1 ml = 1 cm^3 Actually, your right. My bad.
  16. Excellent example. If the recipe calls for 12 ounces of water and all you have are a set of measuring spoons you best know how many spoons of either size to an ounce...or to a cup if you know the conversion factor for that. Of course there is always Grandma who would SHOOT anyone who dared use a measuring device for cooking! How would that be different than working with a recipe that called for 500ml of water and all you had was a 2ml eyedropper? Either way, you are going to toss the measuring spoon or eyedropper aside and eyeball it. And maybe become a better cook for it. Aye! One thing is for sure-I can't cook any worse than I already do. If I needed 500 ml of water and all I had was a 2 ml eyedropper I would grab a coffee mug, measure the volume, and use that. 1 ml = 1 mm^3. Try that with teaspoons-tablespoons-ounces-cups-pints-quarts.

  18. Momma cat won't abandon them if you touch them so changing the pillow is no problem but, quite honestly, is probably not needed. Gotta watch handling young kittens. As soon as they are born and dry they are looking for someone or something to scratch..and they have VERY sharp little needles in each paw! (Think Gremlins after midnight)
  19. I like the metric system. It is so much easier coverting units, just move the decimal. How many grams in 7536 kilograms? Easy. 7536*1000=7536000. How many ounces in 7526 pounds? Uh...let me get my calculator..... 7536*16=120576. How many millimeters in 7536 kilometers? Again, easy. 7536*1000*1000=7536000000. How many inches in 7536 miles? Uh....where'd that calculator go? ok...7536*5280*12=477480960. Sure, there's a little memorization to get started but after a bit it's all second nature.
  20. Nobody challenges the argument that no means no. I think we are all in agreement on that. But it does seem strange you should be the one repeating it while at the same time defending Clinton against his accusers with the excuse that "no didn't always mean no". No means no. Always has, always will (unless Clinton needs to redefine "no" to suit his needs, kinda like the meaning of "is" or "sexual relations").
  21. Is someone who wins a highly competitive and prestigious scholarship by virtue of their demonstrated merit and ability, and accepts their only opportunity to have said scholarship, to be counted as one who dodged the draft simply to avoid serving the country? You damn skippy! Lots of people gave up a hell of a lot more than a Rhodes scholarship to serve their country in a war they didn't agree with, so why not bookworms?
  22. Then why have you voted for SO many of them??? And have so much hate for another.... I guess the devil is in the details.. I voted for the guy who actually served in combat and was supported by the guys on his boat who DID come back alive and told the truth that would serve them best. Nice that Rove et all do such smears against people like Cleland.. and Kerry... and McCain...and Murtha.. the guys who went.. while HE HIMSELF DODGED the DRAFT as did his BOSS the DICK. And with such a stllar combat record. George himself is a shining example of your Officers Club /BX warrior. Fixed it for you. BTW, have you been peeking over my shoulder while I vote? How else would you know who I did or did not vote for? Nice that you can carry your envy of officers for so many years. The more you post the more the truth of how you feel comes out.
  23. I have no problem with free speech or dissenting views and opinions. What I do have a problem with is people who can excuse some for dodging the draft and refusing to serve in THEIR COUNTRIES ARMED FORCES but not others just because of their underlying reason for doing so. A draft dodger is a draft dodger is a draft dodger...what part don't YOU understand??? I have two cousins who fought in 'Nam even though they didn't agree with the war. Their parents had come to this country as immigrants and they felt a DUTY to serve regardless of their political convictions. "I don't want to serve because I don't agree with the war" is just a pussy copout.
  24. Mr. Green uses whatever means at his disposal to avoid serving in the military and is called a coward for doing so. Mr. Blue uses whatever means at his disposal to avoid serving in the military and is not a coward. No hypocricy? Whatever you say. Clinton did not serve nor did he wave a pro-war flag. But what he DID do was organize anti-war rallies against the U.S. in other countries. I suppose that is ok in your book?
