  1. I guess I was looking at the issue from a psychological standpoint. Due to the fact MIT is working on it I am not trying to figure out algorithms or the quantum physics surrounding a traffic jam. My idea is hard to explain over the internet because it deals with perception and the change in perception. Would spreading the formation help? Well yeah because to you a movement on their part would not immediately trigger a response on yours but it sure would look funny from outside the formation. Also the further a person is away from someone else in the formation the longer it would take them to realize if their flying is off. Consider what the earth looks like falling at terminal from 12,000' and falling at terminal at 2,000'. Holy shit the earth is really coming up fast! It didn't look like that at 12,000'! I like what Jarno said because I understand this is what is happening with Wingsuiting. It will take time. I guess I just have a problem sitting idle minded during this time of development and discovery. Sky Canyon Wingsuiters
  2. I understand that but the flaps are not exerting any directional force on the bag because the flaps are moving in the same direction as the bag during freefall. This would lead me to think that the bag wouldn't feel anything when the flaps fell away. I mean if you dropped a bag full of random stuff and then opened all sides of the bag, since everything in the bag and the bag itself is moving at the same velocity with the same direction the contents wouldn't all of sudden fly all over. 3. I understand issues surrounding approach as this was something pounded into my head with RW jumps, but I was trying to apply that to when the formation is in completion or you are in your "slot". Promote the idea that a distance capable of a grip is THE distance. The smaller the space between jumpers the smaller the variances. Sky Canyon Wingsuiters
  4. During a freefall deployment where are forces acting on the bag coming from? Seems to me the bag wants to stay right where it is at. Stuck on your back until the bridle gives it a yank off your back. Up until that point unless your body makes large movements from the time the pin is pulled until that split second later the bridle pulls on the bag wouldn't it be reasonable to think the bag is going to want to stay right where it is at? Again this is just me trying to wrap my head around the issue. Sky Canyon Wingsuiters
  5. I was contemplating issues surrounding WS flocks. I applied theories surrounding traffic jams to flocks. What my idea and this might seem obvious, but the tighter the initial tolerances are between people the less likely large changes will occur. What I mean by this is instead of telling people to fly a slot a certain distance away, why not just tell them to fly as close as they are comfortable doing? Say you are in a car and you come up on a traffic jam. You are traveling 60 mph and you brake as you come to the jam. You brake to 40 mph. When you reach the jam you realize it is moving at 50 mph. Knee jerk reaction caused you to over brake. The person behind you over brakes and the reaction creates a chain. Apply this to flocking. You are flying towards a formation. you reach your slot but you think you are going to be too close to the other flier and hit the brakes, and over brake. This ripples through, etc. etc. So the smaller the distance between people the less likely over braking will occur or at least minimize it. As wingsuiters we do not have the luxury of grips all the time which can absorb a certain amount of this. So why not closer? Instead of slots defined a square area why not slots defined by angles and vectors, with distance merely being a function of time. Just throwing it out there... But considering how intelligent us wingsuiters are I'm sure this has been discussed and analyzed. Probably in a book I haven't read. Sky Canyon Wingsuiters
  6. This might be a dumb question, but I am assuming that when you say have someone pull the pin and see if the bag falls out immediately you mean while standing? If this is the case I don't see how it affects a deployment when the force is from the top of the tray and not gravity pulling it down "through" the bottom flap. Sky Canyon Wingsuiters
  7. Where is there a clip? Sky Canyon Wingsuiters
  8. Impervious because no one owns them... Haha, I own a Mac. It is only a matter of time before people really start writing more viruses for Macs. In this particular case it just stopped me from going to forums. I just closed safari and stopped going to dz.com for a while. Sky Canyon Wingsuiters
  9. I would suggest reading the wingsuit FAQ. There are some minimums you might be interested in... Sky Canyon Wingsuiters
  10. I am going to FL this winter between late December and middle January. One weekend is devoted to the tandem rating course, but am looking for the best spots for other times. I notice stuff around new years and the 16th of Janurary, but I don't see anything for the weekend before? Where should I go? What should my dropzone circuit look like? Oops the tandem course is the 3-6th of January in Zhills Sky Canyon Wingsuiters
  11. Very funny like... Hold your breath until you start getting dizzy and blurred vision. Take a breath though before everything goes dark. I mean who would everyone give shit too if you held it too long? Sky Canyon Wingsuiters
  12. Who said anything about shifting around when everyone is in there? I didn't realize this was such a "touchy" subject. The only complaint that I have heard from other jumpers regarding boarding the plane and the ride to altitude is that us birdmen don't always come in pairs. Throw's off the tandems rhythm I guess. Anyway since my method is obviously taboo, I will quietly bow out and go practice the "approved" boarding method...or not. Hmm sounds like something out of a porn, "boarding method". EDIT To all posts of mine... My technique only applies to Otters! If we are talking about the porn reference, only Beavers! Sky Canyon Wingsuiters
  13. I guess I need an instruction manual then. Or my own personal plane. For me there is nothing more annoying than someone single stepping a ladder... So inefficient! Sky Canyon Wingsuiters
  14. Then what do you suggest for someone that is unable to enter aircraft with both legs zipped? For those of us without those spiffy new suits with ultra wide leg wings? Sky Canyon Wingsuiters
  15. Because of the ladder used to get in the Otter I usually jump out of and the fact that an S-6 has a long narrow leg wing I am forced to zip up one leg on the ground and one after I get on the plane. I am not sure where the rudeness comments comes from. Just board quicker than everyone else, quick zip the other leg in the area by the door and then go up to the front. Butts in no ones faces and not holding anyone up. When I was jumping a Firebird the leg wing wasn't as restrictive so I would zip it before I boarded. As far as what I do under canopy I like to undo the wing and button it up. That way If I need to run out a landing I can, but I only do what altitude and traffic allows. Sky Canyon Wingsuiters
  16. I did a search here and checked the Alti-2 website and I didn't see any information. Anyone have any idea when the new Neptunes are to be released? Sky Canyon Wingsuiters
  17. Know how to match? I guess if you can't match speeds you will have to settle for colors. Sky Canyon Wingsuiters
  18. Along those lines why not make judgments based on the area the entire formation fits into? Because there are not grips and "breathing" takes place why not look at the formation as a whole? There have been plenty of RW formations which could be counted due to all grips being made, but it might not accurately represent the formation intended. i.e. one wacker curves too much or not enough. Draw a shape, scale it in such a way you can decide how many wingsuiters can optimally fit into it. If at any point or predetermined amount of time every flyer fits into that shape then it is a record. I guess what I am getting at is look at a record like a whole painting, rather than just a collection of brush strokes. Sky Canyon Wingsuiters
  19. Everyone is entitled to their opinion I guess. In any case people are inherently afraid of those things they don't understand. What happens when you don't understand it and then don't try to understand? Ignorance. I think what people find so "ridiculous" about this wingsuiting thing is their belief that we fall so much slower than a "normal" skydive and why if we are adrenaline junkies and madmen why would we want to slow it down, just to pitch a parachute at the end anyway? They don't often consider the whole 100 mph forward. Or maybe they are just jealous we are rising above a normal existence and somehow indirectly making everyone elses lives appear boring and unmoving. Sky Canyon Wingsuiters
  20. Just to be a troublesome newbie isn't a lot of this like when a seasoned wingsuiter tells a newbie to not worry about the numbers and just go out and have fun and learn to fly your body and fly it with other people? You guys got 71 wingsuiters together in a formation that was understandable and clean. What more do you want. Do you really want to make it a complicated process with a lot of additional technology? It sends mixed messages when you tell a newbie not to worry about numbers when you are doing just that. Flame on... Sky Canyon Wingsuiters
  21. Congratulations! Excellent work guys! Sky Canyon Wingsuiters
  22. Well what the hell are you doing way up there? Sky Canyon Wingsuiters
  23. The sport is what you make it. If you quit because you are bored then that is your problem not the sport's. Can DZ's get cleaned up and present a cleaner image? Yes, would you like to pay for renovations? Do you think about how clean the floor is when you are 10000 feet above the ground with some of your best friends having fun? Are there plateaus in interest? Yeah I can see it, but try something different. Getting bored with RW? Flip over and go on your head. Canopy flight getting repetitive? Go touch someone! Under canopy I mean. Tired of burning a hole in the sky? Throw on some extra nylon in the form of a wingsuit. If you run out of things to learn, blame yourself. Not the sport. I think too much emphasis is put on the "rush" of skydiving. After a while you get used to jumping out of a plane and most of the time you aren't nearly as nervous as you were on your first jump. Get over it. Look at the learning challenges. Appreciate the ability of the sport to humble you at any skill level. This is not a sport which is meant to define a weekend or one month. Don't just let it change your life. Let it define it. Blue Skies. Sky Canyon Wingsuiters
