  1. It all makes sense now. The government knows that ten chapters is a lot of chapters and people don't read a lot anymore so they are removing chapters for our benefit! "That looks dangerous." Leopold Stotch
  2. Logic is not relative. Reasoning ... maybe I shouldn't have used reasoning? "That looks dangerous." Leopold Stotch
  3. If all morals are relative than one can not use their morals to justify their actions to others. If one can not use their morals to justify their actions to others than they must use logic and reasoning because logic and reasoning are absolute. Thus, universal standards can be defined using logic and reasoning. PS: If you have been reading you may have noticed that I have been stating universal standards and not universal morals ... "That looks dangerous." Leopold Stotch
  4. Is this not the same as saying that some rights and wrongs are absolute and some are not? If some rights and wrongs are absolute then we know when some cultures are right and wrong and we know when some cultures could be better (relative to themselves). "That looks dangerous." Leopold Stotch
  5. Yes, oil companies make money by getting you to use their product. Yes, Gore makes money by getting you to use his products. Because many people distrust research done by oil companies soley because they stand to make money from it but those same people don't distrust research done by Gore even though he stands to makes money from it. "That looks dangerous." Leopold Stotch
  6. You state that some rights and wrongs are absolute but we should not use them while discussing other cultures ... why? "That looks dangerous." Leopold Stotch
  7. If you read the entire thread you would realize that you do not have to tell me, you need to tell everyone else ... "That looks dangerous." Leopold Stotch
  8. We do allow many things. However, you (and others) stated that right and wrong are relative. If right and wrong are relative then our foreign policy is only wrong relative to you (and others). Thus, we just need to eliminate you (and others) for our foreign policy to always be right. "That looks dangerous." Leopold Stotch
  9. No 1+1 = 10 (I prefer working in binary) This is actually a good example because it shows that the concept remains the same (universal) while the context changes (local). "That looks dangerous." Leopold Stotch
  10. I believe what you are referring to is the statement that a non-rigger is allowed to build their own main but is not allowed to repair their own main. (I believe I read this statement in The Parachute Manual by Dan Poynter.) "That looks dangerous." Leopold Stotch
  11. But it is a universal truth that does not depend on whether anyone agrees or disagrees. "That looks dangerous." Leopold Stotch
  12. Universal Statement: 1 + 1 = 2 The universal statement is mathematically correct regardless if one or everyone disagrees. "That looks dangerous." Leopold Stotch
  13. I'm just glad someone else understands where I am coming from ...
  14. There were books with out pictures, then there were books with pictures, then there were books with only pictures, and now there is video ... Edit: "Reading, after a certain age, diverts the mind too much from its creative pursuits. Any man who reads too much and uses his own brain too little falls into lazy habits of thinking." Albert Einstein "That looks dangerous." Leopold Stotch
  15. Article "That looks dangerous." Leopold Stotch
  16. Who said anything about support? The support of something alone does not make it right or wrong ... "That looks dangerous." Leopold Stotch
  17. You do realize that was a sarcastic comment in response to a previous post that stated ... .. don't you? "That looks dangerous." Leopold Stotch
  18. Many people feel justified in their actions, it doesn't mean they are justified in their actions. You are also not condeming any of these things. Do you see the contradiction? You are stating that we do not have the right while at the same time stating that right and wrong are relative. "That looks dangerous." Leopold Stotch
  19. I assume that you never studied philosophy. Zero. Logic and reasoning do not require belief. "Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities." Voltaire I can claim a "universal" standard exists because logic and reasoning span cultures. I apologize, I should have used justified instead of acceptable. Can you give a situation where genocide (murder, rape, ...) is justified? "That looks dangerous." Leopold Stotch
  20. If there is no universal standard then there exists situations in which genocide is acceptable ... do you care to explain those situations? Maybe you would rather explain murder, rape, ... Not every culture views those things the same way. If they did then there would be a "universal standard". Read your history book. Not that long ago people here in North America thought it was a good idea to exterminate the Native Americans. Apparently they didn't know about your "universal standard". I have read my history books. Just because people didn't or don't follow universal standards didn't and doesn't mean universal standards don't exist. All you have to do to prove that genocide (murder, rape, ...) isn't a universal standard is present a single situation in which genocide (murder, rape, ...) is acceptable ... I won't hold my breath. "That looks dangerous." Leopold Stotch
  21. If there is no universal standard then there exists situations in which genocide is acceptable ... do you care to explain those situations? Maybe you would rather explain murder, rape, ... "That looks dangerous." Leopold Stotch
  22. That's a nice utopian world you live in. In a utopian world everyone would conform to universal standards. In the real world, people need to put pressure on other people to conform to universal standards. "That looks dangerous." Leopold Stotch
  23. There is something fundamentally wrong with beating someone just because they were in a car with another person regardless of who that other person is. Whether you like it or not some truth is universal, this most definitely falls under that category. "That looks dangerous." Leopold Stotch
  24. Every government should put pressure on every government that doesn't conform to universal standards. Do you not agree that some things are universal and some things are local? "That looks dangerous." Leopold Stotch
