Of course. DZO's don't usually do that, they farm it off to riggers.... Who may or may not do a good job. Before flying off the handle, a concerned jumper should quietly discuss the issues with management, to make sure they're aware. Only then should they fly off the handle... _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

I think it begs mention, that Al Jazeera is only slated for Canadian Viewing with such a tight restriction on what is actually broadcast, that it most likely never WILL be broadcast. To argue that Canada gets Al Jazeera but not Fox is pedantic. Neither will be broadcast anytime soon, largely for the same reasons. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

Quietly mention to the DZO that you think some of their gear needs maintenance. Have a list, and be prepared to show him. Many DZO's are simply unaware of the condition of their student gear, since they don't jump them. Don't become a pain in the ass unless you've first tried to point it out quietly. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

Vote blindly along political lines, or don't vote at all?

I think Yoink was attempting to proove that the idea of "fixing" a pilot chute in tow is a bad idea. Certainly a worthwhile attempt. Interesting findings, too. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

Sun Path grounds Javelins with adjustable MLW
AndyMan replied to kallend's topic in Safety and Training
Those containers were manufactured in 96. I don't believe SunPath offered the adjustable harness then. That sale is probably unrelated. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. -
Faa approves new "sport" pilot license.

That makes a whole lot more sense. Here's the actual text: "Competitors who are not U.S. citizens must posess a Resident Alien Card U.S. INS Card I-551, or an L-551 temporary stamp in their passport. " How do compeditors prove their citizenship? _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

Are you a "goal oriented" skydiver?
AndyMan replied to skybytch's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Absolutely. Currently I'm working towards being a first class camera flyer. The short term goal is to be making good money working with tandems. After that, Get my performance landings to the point where I can get my PRO rating through high performance flight. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. -
From Slashdot The FAA has just approved regulations creating a new class of pilot's license. (FAA press release here). The Sport Pilot license allows you to fly Light-Sport planes. It is much, much easier to get than a normal pilot's license; for example, you don't need to get a medical exam, and the training requirements are minimal. Overview Here. Excerpt: "Light-Sport airplanes will be limited in size and power: maximum weight 1,320 pounds, maximum two seats, maximum airspeed 120 knots, single non-turbine engine, fixed landing gear. If it's a Light-Sport, it should be one of the easiest planes to fly." This has the potential to dramatically increase the number of people owning and flying planes. Not only is it easier for a person to become a Sport Pilot, it is easier and cheaper for a company to sell a Light-Sport airplane. (For years, people have been building "kit" airplanes just so they will fall under the looser "homebuilt" rules. Now, there will be no need to build a plane unless you actually want to do so.) Several airplane companies have promised to produce Light-Sport planes that will cost no more than a luxury car." I don't think this will affect skydiving ops in the slightest, except it may increase traffic at the small airports we use. I do suspect this license might be very popular with jumpers... _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

Salting and aging are two different things. The dry aging process does not involve salt. Next to salting beef before cookoing, properly dry aging it is the best thing that you can do to it. Ever. You can buy aged beef, but it gets really expensive, really quick. Beef that's aged just a few weeks will cost about twice as much as it's non-aged equivalent. Secondly, ageing only really works with the best cuts of beef, and only beef that's Choice or Prime. I have seen prime steaks that've been aged 14 weeks... at $45.00 / pound. You can age at home if you've got a big fridge. Techniques are varied, but easy to find: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&q=dry+age+home&btnG=Search. Yes, ageing is sorta like a controlled "rot". The meat is allowed to naturally break down in a controlled manner. Kinda gross if you think about it too much, but most definately the best tasting steak you'll ever have if you don't. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

I've seen a few people say things like this... and I'm a bit shocked. First, let me offer a definition. Seasoning is the act of adding pure salt. That's it. Not pepper, not oregano, not rosemary, not basil, not cayenne, nor any other conceivable spice or herb. If you're adding spices, you're not seasoning. If you're a purist (and I am), then seasoning is not adding table salt either, because table salt contains iodine. If you're a purist then you season with kosher salt or sea salt. I use Kosher salt. This is important. If you add table salt, your meat will taste "salty". If you use pure salt, your meat will taste more like... meat. I'll get deeper into this below. Seasoning all kinds of good quality meat is a must. Ask any butcher. Seasoning does two things. First, the salt draws out the liquids from the meat, causing them to collect on the surface of the meat. Later, when you throw the meat on a 500 degree surface, somthing happens called the Maillard Effect. This is one particular piece of goodness, because it's precisely the Maillard effect that causes the brown crusty tasty goodness to form on the outside of your meat. More salt = more liquids on the surface, which means more brown crusty tasty goodness on the outside of your steak. Secondly, the pure salt will react with your tongue to "activate" your tastebuds. The salt will make your steak taste more like steak. It'll make your chicken taste more like chicken, and your pork more like pork. Salt is a good thing. There's a reason it's been the cause of at least 3 very large wars... Allow me to step out on a limb and say that anybody who doesn't season their meat is not getting their money's worth. Nor are they a good chef. Meat must be delicately seasoned before cooking. Lastly - Outback steak is by far not the best. Beef in America gets classified by the USDA as Grade A, Choice, or Prime. There are other ratings, but those are the ones you'll tend to see in grocery stores and restaurants. Exactly how the USDA assigns these ratings is pretty complicated, but they do a pretty good job of making sure the best tasting beef gets the best rating.... which is Prime. One step below prime is Choice. According to the Outback website, they serve Choice beef. Not bad, but certainly not the best. Secondly, I'd argue that the cuts of beef at Outback are just too thin. This means they aren't cooked long enough to allow the Maillard Effect to materialize properly, without overcooking the insides. A good cut of beef should never be cooked more then Medium Rare, but that's another thread. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

Actually, you'd be surprised. Go take a look at www.adaware.com and www.adware.com I was visiting a clients site last week who'd insisted that he'd run Ad-Aware. The minute I saw the receipt - he paid $45.00 for it, I knew he was hosed. he'd bought it at adware.com - and it infested is computer even worse. Which is why I said to get the version from download.com. There are many programs that are spoofing Ad-Aware. Download.com is a good, trusted source, that only carries the legit spyware remover. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
