  3. I didn't know there were so many .com'ers downtown. Craichead and I have a condo just a few blocks from the train station. It'd be fun to go out for dinner and drinks one of these days. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  4. I'm more curious why you use different systems on the different helmets. I'm a big fan of the cuttaway system on the FTP - which is largely why I bought one. The engineer in me disliked the springloaded ones because it seems like they'd be prone to jamming, and this case seems to reinforce that. The engineer in me also loves the simplicity of the FTP hinge. Why not put a FTP style hinge on the Optik? _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  5. Do not ever board an airplane you that intend to jump from without knowing size of both your main and reserve canopies. Ever. You are rapidly approaching a proficiency in skydiving where you take responsibility for yourself. Start on your next jump, by knowing what make, model, and size of gear that you're trusting your life to. Knowing the size of your canopies doesn't change your emergency procedures. It gives you the required knowledge to know if that gear is safe for you to jump. It is the most basic item in your gear inspection procedure. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

  7. Not looking so hot: http://www.resellerratings.com/seller1805.html I would definately use Reseller Ratings to help fine a good retailer. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  8. By the same token, Gandolph storming into Helms Deep in Return of the King is equally impressive, if not more. Of course, it was digital. My wife (dz.com username craichead) runs the rights/repro division of the Chicago Historical Society, and is a film photographer and silver purist. I'm a geek who went digital for both stills and video.[1] If the two of us manage to get along and admire each others work, surely the rest of the you can, too. [1] I'm still threatening to jump our Graflex Speed Graphics. Craichead won't let me, so I'll have to do it when she's away. She'll never suspect a thing... -Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  9. The big things to remember about Eloy are simple: 1) Keep your head on a swivel. 2) Landing off in the desert is perfectly acceptable, and nothing you need to avoid. You do not need to "make" the official landing area on every jump. Eloy is really good about briefing you on the standard ops when you sign the waiver. Pay attention. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  10. Skydance photography will sell you a thumb-screw. http://www.pia.com/skydance/accessor.htm It'd be much cheaper if you can find a good camera store, or use a normal flat-head screw from a good hardware store. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  11. lol... that's entirely possible. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  12. I'm completely comfortable with it as you've described it. I'm not completely comfortable with the text of the agreement, because I didn't see anything that mentioned uploaded work. Not a big deal, because I don't tend to upload my stuff anyways, but I thought you might want to offer clarification in the agreement itself. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  13. Section 4 of the useragreement (copyright and trademarks) seems to imply that uploading images to a gallery gives dz.com full copyright of the uploaded images, as well as ownership to anything posted to the forums. If that's not the intention, is maybe a rewording in order? Or.. am I missing something? _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

  16. Most importantly, George Lucas can not release the movie in its original format because it doesn't exist. Star Wars was so popular, and so many original copies made when it first came out, that the original negatives were severely worn, and some sections were badly damaged over time. Some sections of the movie had to be reshot. The movie in its pure, unaltered original form does not exist. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

  18. I understand that, I just misstated. Smaller aperatures, or larger f-stops are why I'm shooting at 100 ISO and a slower shutter speed... I'm trying to get coax the camera into using larger f-stops, to give greater depth of field. I guess I don't understand how people are able to set focus just shy of infinity - say, with the infinity mark pointing to the 'R' on the Sigma 15, and still get adequate depth of field. Looking at how the marks on my lens are setup, that suggests DOF goes from roughly 4 feet away to infinity, which means I'd need to be always more than 4 feet away from the subject....? _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  19. I'm having issues with both exposures and depth of field with my Digital Rebel. The results are proving disapointing. I'm setting the camera in TV mode, ISO 100 with a shutter speed of 400 on bright, clear days. My thoughts are the slow film, and slower than normal shutter speed would give me a larger aperature, which would mean a bigger depth of field. That's not happening. 1.jpg (exit) ended up with an aperature of 5.6 and an overexposed horizon. - notice the compresion artifacting in the blue sky, even though I'm shooting large fine. 2.jpg (taking the grip) aperature 4.5, overexposed horizon and underexposed gear. 3.jpg (deployment) aperature 6.3, out of focus. The day was clear, cool, and low humidity. I'm shooting the Sigma 15mm, with the infinity sign lined up with f-stop 8. I'm figuring that this means on this lens everything between roughly 3 feet and infinity should be in focus if I can get aperature to F8... But that's not happening. I'm thinking my only alternative is to set infinity to F5ish, but a: that's not marked on the lens, and b: that'll give me a really short depth of field, which will put me out of focus when I take the hand-dock... Any thoughts? _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  20. My question is really specific to people jumping big helmets and high performance canopies. After a good weekend of jumping, I have one very black fingernail, and 4 bandaged fingers - all from punching my helmet as I hang onto my risers during the opening. I fly a Stileto at 1.8, so it's important to fly the canopy through its opening. I also jump a flat-top-pro, so I have a big target to punch... How do people with big helmets and fast canopies manage to fly through their opening without tearing their fingers to shreds? _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  21. Yes. She used to work for the Toronto Board of Education as a sex-ed nurse. How do I know this? She taught me sex-ed in grade 4,5, and 6. That would have been almost 20 years ago, and we thought she was old and yucky then! I'm amazed she's still going strong. You'll have to ask my wife. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  22. I suspect that the large numbers for August are statistical anomalies, and in themselves mean nothing. June and July had surprisingly few incidents, making this year overall consistent with last year, and the general trend over the last few years. There may be some people who saw the relatively low number of incidents in the spring and early summer, and started taking more risks thinking the sport suddenly got safer. I'm skeptical though, and this theory is certainly impossible to either prove or disprove. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  23. PDR 143. Javelin OJ Loaded at 1.7 It flew fine, flared nicely, and set me down great. No mal, I was flying a demo before I bought. That wingloading is not recomended for anyone unless their balls are of unusually large size, and their skill is of equal proportion. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  24. Disapointing I don't have video. I was too busy laughing my ass off at Jeff to run get the camera... The funniest was the 3 guys going down at exactly the same time. They were sitting on the floor cross legged, arms linked. Two clicks out of the taser and they all fall backwards in unison. The Chicago philharmonic couldn't have such good timing... _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
