Docking on the student does provide value - not to the video, but to the stills. It presents an opportunity to get good close-ups that would otherwise be hard to frame because of small movements. Close-ups shot with a hand dock are better framed because the camera flyer is more stable relative to the student. Not that I'm recomending it for this new camera flyer. While it helps get good still close-ups, it's very dificult to do without hosing the framing on your video. The tendency is for new camera flyers to focus (frame) on the dock instead of the students face. It takes a lot of practice to reliably take the dock while remaining focused on the students face. People have commented here that video'ing tandems is easy. I'd agree with one caveat: It's easy to do mediocre video. It's very difficult to do really good tandem video. I'm lucky (?) that my DZ has very high standards for their tandem video. I can't stress how much I've learned since I started doing it... I usually take hand docks. I'll explain to the student in the plane "If I offer my hand, take it like this: . If I shake, let go". We usually do this around 10,000 feet - with ample opportunities to deal with a student who won't let go. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

Slow or High Speed Mal: Which is harder to deal with?
AndyMan replied to Michele's topic in Safety and Training
Packing errors and poor body position. Pay special attention to properly stowing your break lines. Some people say spinning malfunctions are more common on high performance canopies, but my experience so far is the opposite. In 200 jumps, I had a spinning malfunction under my Triathlon loaded at 1.0. In 500 jumps, I have not had one under my Stiletto loaded at 1.8. You shouldn't read too much into any of this, other than to say that it can happen under any canopy, and you should be prepared on every jump. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. -

How do you attach your flash to your helmet?
AndyMan replied to Deuce's topic in Photography and Video
*bump* I know a lot of people have added flashes lately. How did you mount them? Pics would be nice.... -
Do U Need 2 Adjust Flare 4 different canopies?
AndyMan replied to somethinelse's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Yes, to both questions. It gets easier once you start jumping the same canopy time after time. Every canopy flares differently, and you'd be smart to try to figure out the required input before landing. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. -
I missed ematteo's earlier post... my bad! Thanks for the tip. I had to rotate, then vertically flip the ground shot. It looks great now... http://www.shutterfly.com/progal/slide.jsp?auto=0&aid=768a5498cf54bd7a5fb4 _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

I almost never put real email addresses for registration pages - unless I know who's running it. :) If the site requires email validation, then I'll use one of my old seldom used email accounts - accounts I haven't used in years. I've seen the same behaviour that you do on sites that I used to run - people really don't like giving up their email addresses unless they've got a good reason - unless the process they're involved in requires email. I suspect people have trouble remembering their email addresses because they're giving you seldom used, throwaway accounts. My question to you, is simple. Why is collecting email addresses a key requirement to downloading videos? _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

We just had "crazy shirt day" last friday. It was somehow a part of "customer service week". I saw a grand total of one (1) nonstandard shirt. __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

I could, but I would need to wait until next weekend when I get back out to the DZ. I don't have an otter handy during the week. Taking a background from another shot seems like a pretty good solution, especially since none of you guys noticed the issues with the barrel distortion of the roads. I do need to clean up the bottom of the doorframe a bit... _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

I jump a Stileto loaded at 1.8. I would use an RSL in a heartbeat, if it were not for the fact that I also jump camera. I would prefer an RSL activated reserve deployment under my Stileto then one I did myself - it were not for the camera. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

I've been in the sport for 5 years, and have spend virtually every non-winter weekend on a turbine dropzone. I've never seen a horseshoe malfunction. Modern gear is very good at keeping container secured until the pilot chute is extracted. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

Slow or High Speed Mal: Which is harder to deal with?
AndyMan replied to Michele's topic in Safety and Training
I worry most about spinning malfunctions. They're somewhere inbetween a fast malfunction and a slow one - the fact is that you really don't know how fast you're going. My protrack has clocked me at in excess of 100+MPH in a spin, but I'm not sure how accurate it was. Spinning malfunctions can twist your harness so that handles are hard to find. They often involve intaglements, so pulling your cuttaway handle might not be enough to free the main. You might need to cuttaway your helmet, either with a pre-installed cuttaway system or a hook-knife, or just by undoing a buckle. Once you finally free yourself of the main, then you need to locate and pull your reserve handle, which has invariably moved as your harness shifts. You need to do all this with enough time to deploy your reserve in time, but are completely unable to figure out in advance how much time you have - all because you don't know how fast you're falling. An RSL would simplify the case significantly, but it doesn't work with big, ugly camera helmet setups... _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. -
She's similing cause the "bitch" is about to be "tossed" from the otter... The orignal is attached. No, it's not a cloud violation, the background is overexposed. I inserted a the ground from another shot. The problem I saw - and couldn't figure out how to deal with - was that the barrel distortion from my sigma 15 caused curved roads, and the pattern is inconsistent with the distortion in the frame of the door. The doorframe curves concave, and the roads curve convex... so to speak. This stuff is fun. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

There are two ways that people can jump with a student. 1) they're appropriate rated coach/instructor. 2) they'are an appropriately skilled and qualified videographer. The former is easy, either you've got the ratings or not. The Latter is more complicated, because that requires us to define the skills required to fly with students. The USPA has published requirements for jumping with Students. They're listed in the IRM, and I don't have one handy, so I can't look it up. That said, I would not want your first experience of jumping with a student to be one where there is no instructor present. Make no mistake, jumping with someone who does not yet have their 'a' license, IS jumping with a student. Unlicensed skydivers are students. By my standard, you're unqualified to jump with a student unless you're appropriately rated, or you've established an appropriate skillset by shooting video of tandem or AFF jumps regularly. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

Cutaway system on new helmet is not working.
AndyMan replied to SuperKat's topic in Photography and Video
Sort of. The optik illusion has a hinge, but the cuttaway doesn't use it like on the FTP. The Optic Illusion cuttaway still seems to be the same one as on the normal Optic. That said, I haven't seen an Optik Illusion up close. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. -

I would think it not very dificult to use the same hinge to attach the chin-cup. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
