  1. The difference between a 3CCD and a single chip camera is not resolution - both output video at exactly the same resoltuion. The difference is the clarity of colors. A 3 CCD camera will produce much more vibrant colors. A sunset taken with a VX2000 will not compare at all to that taken with a PCXXX. Is it worth it? Depends. Are you rich? How much do you care about the quality of your work? Is selling to TV or "big media" a realistic opportunity? Myself, I do have a VX2000 on my long term shopping list. If I ever find I'm rich, I'll get one then, just for the hell of it. :) _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  2. I have the same setup - Epson 1280 with Epson paper and ink, and have the same results: None of my pics have faded at all. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  3. Yup. 700ish jumps, and so far nothing worse than a mild sprain. That's not to say I've never been hurt on a dropzone, but that story is an answer to a different question. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  4. What about normal weekends at the DZ? Bring your own printer or use Shutterfly? Do you notice different sales? _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  5. How are people doing with Shutterfly? Here's my concern. I love the instant gratification I can give when I have a printer at the DZ. Shortly after the jump I can walk around with a photo and sell it the "old fashioned" way. I find I do pretty good at this... After a 16 way last weekend, I sold 8 copies. Some of them wanted copies "right now!", others are letting me bring them a copy this weekend. I figure if I do Shutterfly, I'll have business cards printed out with the website address, and I'll hand these out after every jump. I'm loving the idea of the reduced hassle of not having to print at the DZ, plus not having a long list of print-outs to do during the week. How easily are people being able to "sell" prints that are on shutterfly? _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  6. I didn't vote in the poll because the options don't represent how I edit. First, I pick the video clips that I'm going to use. Then I pick the audio clips that I'm going to use. Sometimes I use audio just because it's cool, sometimes I pick something that's targetted to the video. Then I edit it all togeather, using an integrated audio/video editing tool like Adobe Premiere. It's not a matter of fitting a to b, but editing both a and b so that they work togeather. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  7. I don't think anyone disagrees that sync'ing video to music is a good thing. I couldn't watch Jon's movie for more than a few seconds... It seems like it was edited for someone with ADD. I felt like it mighta caused a seisure, or sumethin... The clips are just way too fast. This to me is an extreme example of whats wrong with a lot of skydivng videos - there's no room for the context of the shots. The videos don't try to tell a story of the jumps. My videos tend to show complete dives, the edits are a lot longer and often synced to music. Here's the one I did last year: http://www.buildview.com/andrew/2003pgS.wmv. In many cases I tried to make the music match the feel of the video, and sync up when appropriate. One example is at 2:30 ish - I timed Peter Gabriels "when you're falling" with the launch of RW, and I timed the "feel" of the music with the turning of points. It gives some of the jumps a choreographed look. The worked really well around the 6-7 minute mark. It's really subtle, but it's there. Another example is at 9:20ish, during the raft jumps. I had the techno pick up right at exit. Not so suble, but it worked. Just because something is timed to music, it doesn't mean it's gonna be obvious, and it certainly doesn't mean the video has to edited for Attention Deficit Disorder. I've certainly got my ideas about what a good video looks like, and I'm the first to admit that I've got a lot of work before my work is where I want it to be. I am also aware that my ideas are exactly that - ideas, and others are free to disagree. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  8. Generally that's true, but with lenses... I've found the Sony .6 to be of far greater value than my Kenko .5 Cheaper, less distortion, and a strangely wider field of view. To me, as far as lens quality, it's far more important to keep them in good shape than spending extra for a presumed higher quality. The Sony is also cheap enough to be easily replacable. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  9. I suspect you know quite a few more people who are involved in succesful "non-standard" relationships, but have simply chosen not make it a subject of bonfire conversation. I suspect it's more likely the case that you've only found out about the failures. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  10. What's really interesting is that in my last visit to the auditorium, I didn't see a water fountain. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  11. Sounds fun! A few years ago, before the auditorium was built, I was hanging around and Roger asked for help. He was digging a hole where the Auditorium was, we were trying to find a water line because he wanted to be able to install a water fountain... I think that's how it went. So, I'm throwing a pick-axe, trying to break through the concrete floor, with Roger supervising. It must have seemed odd to the passerby's, because quite a few people ended up stopping by to watch. To everyone Roger said the same thing: "I'm sure the gold is burried in here somewhere...." I was never sure who believed him and who didn't. Sure was funny... _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  12. Me and Craichead pulled ourselves out at the last minute. Finances are tough because I'm unemployed, and we both had paying work at our home DZ. Sorry to miss everyone... maybe next year! _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  13. WooHoo! Me and craichead had bets running... I'm not sure who won. )Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  14. I know Perris is really good at hooking up people with load organizers. Have you walked up to manifest and said "Hi! I've got 80 jumps, and am looking for people to jump with." Perris usually has paid load organizers just for that purpose... _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  15. You don't have to agree with the decisions, but you should at least admit that there was a basis for the decision. If you don't understand the basis for those decisions, then you should look it up before you criticize. It's a disservice to say any of those are pulled from thin air. Clearly they're not. I'm surprised to didn't include the Right to Vote as something judges have pulled from thin air. Women, the elderly, and visible minorities have been guaranteed the right to vote through the 15th, 19th, and 26th amendments. The right for young white men to vote is not explicitly defined in the consitution. As such, its only because of "activist judges" who "make law" that this specific right is guaranteed to young white males. Voting is then refered to as a "inplicit" right because it is not "explicitly" mentioned. Lucky for you that "activist judges" are so willing to protect your rights! _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  16. I agree completely, it is absolutely absurd for someone to jump alone for 50 jumps. You mention two choices. 1) Jump alone for the next 100 jumps.2 2) Jump with other relatively new people. I see a 3rd choice. 3) Find a different dropzone, or complain to management until they fix things. I've done a lot of traveling to a lot of differnet dropzones. Many small, many big. I've never had problems finding people of every and all experience level to jump with. Most DZ's actively desginate a person to work with young jumpers. Often this person is on staff, sometimes it's just a dude who likes jumping with newbies. Your profile says you jump at Skydive San Diego. I do not believe for a minute that there's a shortage of people for a newbie to jump with in Southern California. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  17. A few weeks ago there was an incident where two newbies were jumping together, lost altitude awareness, and opened low. I believe one or both may have had a cypres fire. One of the jumpers clipped a tree on landing and was critically injured. I'm not aware of her current condition, but shortly after the incident she was unresponsive in hospital. To make matters worse, she didn't have insurance, but did have two kids and a mortgage. It's a very crappy situation no matter which way you look at it. Knowledge and awareness of that incident is undoubtedly reminding DZO's that two newbies jumping together isn't always smart. I'm not sure why you're complaining. You'll learn more and have more fun if you jump with more experienced people. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  18. Wouldn't it be the case that this wasn't really a court making law, as much as it would be an example of one striking part of a law, justifying their decision by saying "that's just dumb." The semantics between "making new law" and "striking existing laws" may be legally irrelevant and socially trivial, but I think its a key point to those objecting to so-called "activist judges". _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  19. Paraphrse: "I have no idea what I'm talking about, but I'll tell you what I think anyways". Too funny! _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  20. I just don't understand how two people can willingly rape each other at the same time. It doesn't make sense, and it contorts the word into something completely different than the common ussage. That's a disservice. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  21. I think you're exactly right. Now comes the hard part. Explain why. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  22. What we decide the next day is irrelevant. Either we were able to consent or we weren't. Our feelings the next day are irrelevant. Of all the statutes I've seen, I've never seen one that even mentions "after the fact". There's either consent, or there's not. It does devalue the word, because we've gone from having rapists making up a small part of the population, to a place where the definition includes pretty much every married or seriously dating sexually active couple out there. Rape is a ugly, terrible plight that needs to be wiped form the face of the earth. What I hypothetically did with my wife last night doesn't need such treatment. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  23. Hypothetical. I got REALLY drunk with my wife last night, and we bucked like funnies for hours on end. I guess we raped each other? That seems to tremendously devalue the word. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  24. I think you missed the point of the thread. The fact that what the teacher did was illegal is undisputed. She did after all just spend 7 years in jail. I don't see any question or debate over whether or not what she did was abusive and wrong. I'm not sure I understand the semantics of "how" it's wrong. There is an interesting discussion about what constitutes consent. I think it draws paralell to issues of consent and alcohol. The courts and society have largely agreed that a female can't consent to sex while intoxicated. I think that's a good thing. What about if it were reversed? Can a man consent to sex while drunk? I don't think a full grown man has ever willingly engaged in sex while drunk, then claimed rape after the fact, and had the female succesfully prosecuted, yet the same thing with genders reversed happens frequently. What happens when two people who are two drunk to consent to sex hook up. Did they both rape each other? What is consent? _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
