For those that were at the Chicagoland Christmas party
AndyMan replied to Vallerina's topic in The Bonfire
No, sorry. I think you should blame one of these people, though. They look kinda shifty... _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. -
After smoking for at least 10 years, I've just passed the one year mark of being smoke free. I haven't even had a craving since the spring. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

This is exactly why I'm upgrading. When I was first starting I was thrilled at the quality of my video, it's only now that I'm getting more finicky that I can't stand the camera shake... _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

I don't, but I've been known to be proven wrong. I think skydiving has been going away from the idea where you have a remote lens connected by cable to a recording unit. These used to be quite common, but we're now just seeing the last of them being retired. They proved unpopular because jumpers disliked the idea of runnning a cable from their helmet to somewhere else on their body. The last DZ I know of that used a lot of these types of setups was skydive chicago, and they just retired them this year. Myself, I know that the size of the lens matters in photography. I know that while incremental differences are tough to notice, big differences in lens sizes do make a difference. My next camera will probably have a bigger lens, not a smaller one. Personally, I'd rather add size and get a bigger picture then shrink the camera and suffer image quality. I do like the idea of small, and I'm thrilled that Sony continues to make cameras smaller. I'm going to skip the Micro-MV format, but those cameras are TINY. I do look forward to when we have memory-chips big enough to hold digital video, then cameras will be able to get rid of their tape transport mechanism, and they'll get rediculously small. This is where i think video is going.... Tiny self contained cameras in one piece, bought off the shelf. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

I understant the A300 is not exclusively fly-by wire... but the A320 is. I read an explanation saying that the hydraulic systems were severed, and the plane was controlled in the same manner as the Sioux City Boeing crash, by manipulating throttle. It certainly is an amazing story. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

The wind-tunnel in Pigeon Forge was the first one ever built... and they've learned a lot since. They're useful to a dregree as a training aid, but they're far surpassed by the ones in Perris and Orlando. They are tons of fun... You do have to wear huge suits. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

At what point do you waste a perfectly good pack job
AndyMan replied to shmali's topic in Safety and Training
When craichead was learning how to pack, I let her practice on my rig. The deal was that if she could get it into the container, I'd jump it. She got it in, I jumped it, it opened and I didn't get to use my reserve. I had supervised part of the pack job, but in reality I was just making sure I was available to answer questions. The only case where I would've redone work is that if she'd let it get away from herself while trying to bag it, I would have flaked it again. I never contemplated opening a completed packjob. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. -

To deinterlace or not to deinterlace for DVD?
AndyMan replied to Chivo's topic in Photography and Video
Standard television sets are interlaced devides, so if you're playing back to one, having interlaced video will give the best results. If you're expecting it to be played back to a computer screen, then I'd deinterlace. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. -
Why so many jumps before one can fly camera?
AndyMan replied to Skylark's topic in Photography and Video
Insuficient experience is never the primary cause of an incident, experience is what allows us to deal with an issue before it becomes an incident. Strapping a camera to your head greatly increases the odds having an issue you need to deal with. HERE'S a good starting point for people who learned the hard way. I don't think there's any examples since 2001, which I attribute to the trend of people waiting longer to pick up cameras. Some guys at my DZ have taken their cameras off their helmets, because they didn't want the risk. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. -
PC8 is at least a few years old, and I'm not quite sure why people are recomending it so much. You need to find better sources of advice, I think. If you want side mount, you've got a choice between the PC105 and the PC330. The 105 is cheaper, the 330 more expensive. The better features of the 330 include solid-state controls (most 105 controls are touch-screen), higher megapixels for digital-camera functions, and better colors. The 105 goes for $700 while the 330 goes for $1200 at www.dbuys.com _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

Why so many jumps before one can fly camera?
AndyMan replied to Skylark's topic in Photography and Video
Why? Because like most "rules" that exist in skydiving, we learned the hard, bloody, painfull, and ultimately the dead way. No, choosing a small camcorder does not make it OK, either. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. -
Thats hillarious! "...Velcro has an average life span of 700 jumps..." "Not only does Velcro outlast the average tuck tab...." "Recent field reports indicate that Riser Cover Tuck Tabs are a major cause of eliptical canopys spinning up..." Wow. That page in itself is good enough reason to avoid Racers. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

Spectre openings - and opening times in general
AndyMan replied to The111's topic in Gear and Rigging
I would be very surprised if you're getting anywhere near a 1000-1200 foot openings. I'd recomend having somebody video them so that you can get accurate numbers. Myself, I was getting 1200 foot openings, my canopy would be for sale. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. -
I really don't know what you're expecting. In my 4 years of jumping, I have NEVER had "lot" of people come get find me. Usualy just one. The only time I've ever seen more then one car leave to get someone, is when a LOT of people land off. Odd how it works that way. If you ever make up to my DZ, and you land off... Somebody will probably come get you. I really hope you don't complain about it when it happens. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

Ok, then for now on nothing short of the entire coroners report is acceptable for posting here. What you quoted said exactly what I did. Any difference between what I said and what is in the quote is entirely your bias. As I said, the coroner ruled the cause of death was the beating. This is evident in the quote below by the use of "homocide", coming from the greek homo - meaning death by other human. Executions are also homocide, btw. To me, the death in itself isn't particularly notable, clearly the guy was whacked out. What is notable is that that Cincinati PD has a history of this, and that history just got worse. Clearly, its the context which illustrates the trend which makes this story important. I would think that if I were in the Cincinati PD, and I had the history they did, I would be a little more cautious to make sure it didn't happen again. Strangely, that doesn't seem to be happening. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

You think you're liberal There is nothing being distored here, nor is the cause of death uncertain. The coroner clearly reported the the cause of death was the beating by police. Also, putting this one death into the frame of reference of a history of violence does little to distort facts. Indeed, it is required reading for someone trying to understand what happened. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

Sony is by far your best choice, and the PC105 is good. The PC330 is better, but more expensive. Some people are having good experiences with the TRV-22, which is quite innexpensive. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

It depends what types of gloves you're looking for. If you're wanting gloves because of the cold, then a simple trip to your local hiking/outdoor sports store is by far your best bet. If you're wanting gloves simply because competition rules require them, then I have no idea... _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

offtopic, but I'm still waiting on the Neptune, they haven't released the client software yet, and I'll wait at least until that works properly. I love gadgets - trust me, I've got them all - but I get them once they've been around long enough to proove themselves. I don't like being a test dummy, and since I work in the industry I know that buying things when they first come out means that you ARE a test dummy. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

Software to quickly reduce file size of images for web posting?
AndyMan replied to PhillyKev's topic in The Bonfire
Definately not freeware, but Adobe Photoshop is the gold standard. It's got some real nifty automation functions, so you can do very large batches at once. Its quite expensive though... Cheaper then Photoshop, but nearly as good is a shareware program called Paint Shop Pro - you can download it from www.jasc.com. As shareware goes, it's really, really good. Almost as good as Photoshop, which costs 10X as much. Lastly, there's the GIMP - http://www.gimp.org/~tml/gimp/win32/ - I have no experience with the windows version though, the linux version is quite good. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. -
I think it speaks volumes that every other rig manufacturer out there has rejected most of the design principles of the Racer, and standardized on something completely different. There are newer and better designed rigs. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
