to make this applicable to realworld examples, distances and velocities should be broken into an x and a y component: va = velocity of aircraft vw1 = velocity of first wind layer vw2 = velocity of second wind layer . . . vwn = velocity of nth wind layer vo = velocity of wind at opening D = Distance (from perspective of outside observer) from exit point to opening, ie: the skydiver opens 300 ft from where they exited D1 = first jumpers D D2 = second jumpers D dt = distance attributed to D from "throw" dp = distance attributed to D from wind push in freefall(sum of dp1...dpn as a result of vw1...vwn) dg = distance attributed to glide from wind after opening Dreq = Distance rquired between groups = absolute value of D1 - D2 We should be able to combine all these factors to come up with an adequate formula to get t(time between exits) did I miss anything? My math skills are a bit rusty so I would like various suggestions on how to combine all this into one formula. Methane Freefly - got stink?

How about this, we get all the engineers. They put their heads together, and after the loud dull thud, come up with a formula that takes all the different variables, aircraft speed and direction, different wind layers of speed direction and altitude, different fall rates etc. Once the formula is laid out, one of us codes it into a program, shouldn't be to hard to make versions for the web, pc and palm. Then, we make it a kind of standard operating procedure to have the results posted in the loading area. Make the pilot responsible for updating the variables for the formula. edit: The formula needed should work for all conditions, crosswind, downwind, no wind etc.....the only possible exception is when there is a big way in the plane and they need to be given extra time. That could probably be added but lets leave that for version 2.0 Any takers? Methane Freefly - got stink?

Opening High for Bad Spots
jdfreefly replied to BrianSGermain's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Perhaps I made a bad assumption. My dz almost always runs jumprun into the wind. Thus, if I were to attempt to track back to the dz in freefall, I would definately be tracking down the line of flight and I would definately be tracking towards other groups. I maintain that this is a terrible idea. No one can say they will definately see every thing, we are human and we make mistakes. On a crosswind or offset jump run, maybe this would be safe, but I think it is a bad habit to get into. Besides, pulling high, checking your airspace and then flying back towards the dz is more efficient anyway. Anyone with experience has a responsibility in this sport to lead by example. There is a lot of "monkey see monkey do" going on out there. If the 100 jump wonder, who missed five loads waiting for a ride back to the dz, hears someone with more experience talking about tracking back at the dz to make it back from a long spot, or reads about it online, they are sure to try it themselves next time they think they are hosed. I agree with you. As I said in my post, most of the close calls I have seen came from the inexperience of a jumper. Also, the single canopy collision I witnessed was the direct result of an unattentive canopy pilot. Good point...my bad. I have a tendancy to offend. It is purely by accident and poor judgement, I assure you. If you wish to continue this discussion, I suggest we start a new thread, this one has deteriorated into a rant about windspeed, aircraftspeed and groundspeed. People, if you have questions about that stuff, go spend an hour playing with Kallend's frefall simulation before you make your next post. Besides, everyone knows the most important factor in separation is the current position of Ursa Minor in the night sky. Methane Freefly - got stink? -
Opening High for Bad Spots
jdfreefly replied to BrianSGermain's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
This is highly irresponsible...NEVER NEVER NEVER track towards other groups. You can not guarantee that you will see every one. Someone wearing a green suit in spring is going to be damn near invisible up there. White suit in winter, sunset loads, I notice in your avatar you are wearing sunglasses. My safety should not be a factor of your vision. Also, you can't guarantee that you will have a clean deployment. You pull above someone, have a mal, chop and end up in their airspace trying to deploy your reserve. You have a canopy collision and guess what, you are fresh out of good parachutes. Not to mention that you have pretty well fucked up someone elses day because you did not want to land off. I don't want to go taking on greenies, but dude, I can think of several "what ifs" that make this a bad idea. Methane Freefly - got stink? -
My father owned a portable toilet company for a while, which I ran and worked in...I saw some beauties: written seriously by job foreman: Please don't throw cigarettes into the urinal written underneath that: It makes them difficult to light Please don't throw toothpicks into the urinals, the crabs are learning to poll vault. Day 1: "UNION STEW" with an arrow pointing into the toilet on a job site that had both union and non-union workers Day 2: the word "NON" was placed infront of the word union "Beer rental return" with an arrow pointing to the urinal. and all the rest mentioned above...I thought about publishing a book comprised entirely of pictures of things scrawled on the insides of porta-potties. Opening High for Bad Spots

I do not agree with this at all. The only way this could be true were if the group behind exited right on top of you. The less time the two groups are in freefall together, the less time they have to drift towards each other. I agree, but it is also a function of winds aloft and fallrate. Belly fliers drift more because they are exposed to the wind longer. Helicopters and other zero airspeed craft are special situations and should be treated as such. Also, if you can't spot for a helicopter from 5000 ft, some one needs to see the eye doctor. Well said. But if horizontal group separation is maintained, wouldn't that make someone pulling high a non-issue? I pull high when the spot is bad not because I don't have confidence in my ability to land off, but because it is a hassle to not make the dz. Also, you are less likely to piss off a neighbor, which has happened to me before. I have had near misses but always for the following reasons: 1. the person behind me did not leave enough time. 2. the person behind me was "working on my headown"(aka tracking across the sky) 3. the winds had changed and we(as a dropzone) had not adjusted separation accordingly...this is subtly different from #1 Always, this was an issue of inexperience, and in a way my fault for not making sure the people behind me were "in the loop" as Brian says. In all instances, I knew the people behind me were inexperienced and did not take the time to give them guidance they needed. Shame on me! But never was this an issue of pulling high. on a side note, when you peeps out there have a close call, and everyone of you will, do not greet the person on the ground with curses and shouting...this is a certain way to ensure that they don't listen to a word you say. You people miss the point. The majority of people buying this video will be competitors. If you force the production company that makes it to give it away, or make little or no money on the sale to the majority of people that will buy it, you remove the financial incentive for the people producing it. Remove the financial incentive for creating something and the quality of that thing suffers. If you want a copy of the judges tape(unpollished stock footage) given to each team, fine(which would of course cause registration fees to go up). But that, to the best of my knowledge, is not what this will be. Those ladies were working hard at nationals from first load to sunset, and I am sure they are working hard to create a highly pollished product for sale. I competed this year, and I have every intention of buying a copy of this video, three copies infact, one for me and one for each of my teammates. Too many people in this sport are all about, "What's in it for me?" Suck it up, stop your crying and be happy with what the sport gives you already. I will give to this sport until I have nothing left to give. Even to those who only want to know what the sport is going to give them. Sorry if this tone is harsh, but this attitude really pisses me off. Methane Freefly - got stink?

Well, we are allready thinking about next year. Maybe I can convince the rest of the team to go to Eloy but I doubt it. Methane Freefly - got stink?

The rejump...ahhh Well, I told the judges that if they didn't give us a rejump, I was going to walk into their room and just start cutting loose with remnants of last nights taco bell! Actually, I was surprised as all hell that we got a rejump. I really was expecting to end up taking a big fat goose egg on that one. Also, we weren't aware at the time that you guys had actually turned down a rejump the previous year. That might have had some effect on our decision. I'm interested in your opinion, do you think we should not have taken the rejump? Anyway, you guys kicked some serious ass in the last 2 rounds. Methane Freefly - got stink?

Hey, I thought this was a Methane thread! Nice hijack Jank definately rocked the hizzle for shizzle! And they definately deserve props for taking that gold. And I definately deserve props for making the Golden Knights breathe through their helmets! (editted for splleing) Methane Freefly - got stink?

Sory dude...NOT!!!!! Hey, I gotta be me. Thanks to all the people that made Nationals a possibility for us this year, especially Skydive Crosskeys and Monkeyclaw. Oh yeah, we should also thank Taco Bell, the official fuel of Team Methane. That was an all around awesome experience. I would also like to say that the scores in no way indicate the talent of Gravity Rats, The Vibe or Green Eggs and Ham. You guys all flew your asses off! Methane Freefly - got stink?

Below is an account of something I did that was very stupid. It hurt. I learned: I bounced...hard. Up all night partying, went to bed at 7:00AM, didn't wake up until 12:00, did my first jump at 1:00. I did a hard front riser 180 too low. I realized I was in the corner, but by the time the message got from my mind to my hands I had already hit. I bounced back up in the air still moving very fast forward. I flew the canopy back over my head and finished the flare, but when my feet touched the ground my legs were no longer willing to cooperate. I collapsed in a heap. Nothing broken just very, very, very bruised. I chilled out after that. I still hooked it but I went back to gentle front riser carving aproaches. I think that was three years ago and after a long progression, I would like to believe that my skill level is now where my ego thought it was then. Lessons: 1. Hard partying and extreme canopy piloting do not mix.(this falls in the "know your limits" category) 2. The above rule is even more true when you are still learning.(again...know your limits) 3. Never stop flying the canopy. I was told that if I hadn't kept flying after the initial impact, a hospital visit would have been my next adventure.(this one is a lovely blend of "never give up" and "it ain't over untill your in the hangar") 4. Learning to swoop takes time. Six years in the sport and three years working at it and I only now consider myself good at swooping, and I still wouldn't say I am in the top 10 at my dz. I am still learning. It always worries/angers me when I see 1st and 2nd year jumpers trying to be like the guys at the top of the swoop circuit.(patience young grasshopper) Methane Freefly - got stink?

When I first started using mozilla, I found quite a few sites that didn't work. Now, they all seem to have fixed the problem. All of the bussiness sites I use have fixed their Mozilla compatibility issues. The pop-blocking does in fact give you the ability to allow pop-ups from sites you list. It doesn't tell you when it blocks them though since that would get as annoying as the pop-ups themselves. Once you get used to using Mozilla, you will never want to use another browser. Which gets the better Swoop?
jdfreefly replied to Freakflyer804's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Personally, I would try to stay out of the corner on all three......but if you must, I would pick the a crossfire2 over a stilleto. I know nothing about the nitron. Methane Freefly - got stink? -
The only way you could put a briddle extension on a strong would be to have them do it, and I would be willing to bet they wouldn't. Combine that with the fact that you could not psycho pack a strong tandem without one, and I would say it is a total no go. It is my guess that strong would be very unwilling to alter their design in any way that wasn't done expressly to prevent a known malfunction condition. Methane Freefly - got stink?

Send your post into Bill and see if he has the balls to read it on air. You might want to mention that you defend him on a regular basis. I usually agree with him too but sometimes he needs to be reigned in a little. Methane Freefly - got stink?

Some countries require a Tandem Master in training make a jump with dead weight (ie - a sack of dirt or puch of lead). Since this is a strong dual hawk tandem rig, I would guess it is a "student". Notice the 3 ring setup at the bottom. Probably opens the pouch and lets the sand out or something like that. Methane Freefly - got stink?
