I believe that my packer didn't stow it, or I, in a rush to make a back to back, had only stowed one and they didn't notice. Methane Freefly - got stink?

As I promissed, here are some pictures from my recent cutaway. If you missed the post, it's here. I think I might have been able to recover this had the opening not started by surging left and getting my momentum going one way just before it took off to the right. I guess I'll never know! I reached without lookin and found them right away. I am pretty sure that one of my risers hit me in the face. They were twisted up in front of my face so it is a likely scenario. Also, I forgot to mention, congrats to PJ (rigger at X-keys) on his first save. I told him that if I had realized it was him who had packed my reserve, I would have tried harder to kick out of it. Waiting for my laundry to dry so I thought I would post this: The weather for Sunday looked like shit, so I stayed in bed until 10:00. Finally drag my lazy ass out of bed, and wholly shit, it's a nice day... Race to the dz, just in time to miss a load, so I catch the next one. Good 3 way free fly, my budy is jumping a demo so we all break off high. I dump my crossfire2 119 just under 4k(I'm about 220 out the door). Perfect deployment to line stretch, nice ball of sniveling canopy over my head. As it starts to inflate, it begins a dive to the left. Nothing unusual here, it always does that. Then....something feels off, something note quite right....hey where the..what the oh....HARD SURGING TURN to the right. Before you can say, "who packed this piece of shit?!" I've got between 4-5 line twists and a great view of the blue sky as i spin on my back. Wow, this is kind of fun.... One feeble attempt to kick out, but my instincts are saying, "This is not recoverable!" Time to leave...I calmly reach down and get my right hand on the cutaway handle and slip my left hand into the reserve handle. Pull one..ouch...what was that...pull the other. Reserve above my head in plenty of time to calmly arange the cables from both handles and stick them in my mouth (I gotta ask the rigger if he clean these things better next time). Stood it up right by the hangar. My face is stinging like a son of a bitch but other than that, I am in a prety good mood. I look up and I can see my main going down towards the end of the runway and about 40 yds away, I see one of the guys in my group setting up to land. He chased it for me... what a guy. I've got my cables, my main, and just as we start to go out for the free bag, two girls who jump at the dz walk in with it. They were coming back from grabing some food when they saw it. I got video of the whole thing, and you can plainly see that the toggle on the left hand side is unstowed. So I went over and made fun of the packers. One interesting thing about this story, I was under a highly loaded eliptical canopy that was spining violently and the risers were twisted around each other below the toggles. And yet, the cutaway was not dificult at all. The last time (about 2 weeks ago) my reserve was repacked, I had my rigger put hard inserts into my risers. No reason not to have em...get em!!! When I get around to it, I'll freeze frame some of the better shots from the mall and post them up here. Methane Freefly - got stink?

Be patient dude. When the low timers go out and start hurling bodies at each other, there is always one who decides he is qualified to be in charge. Give him a chance, he will probably find a way to humble himself eventually, especially at our dz, the talent there is enormous. I don't know which person you are talking about, so I can't say whether they are suffering from terminal douche-bagedness or if you should give them another shot. And don't tell me here, you should refrain from dragging people's names through the mud on dropzone, even if they do deserve it. And another thing, speak up! This post is more than I have ever heard from you since you started jumping.

Drug testing for DZ Instructors/TMs/Pilots
jdfreefly replied to diverdriver's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
You should add, "Don't care" to the list of options -
My problem with scratch's post is that he attempts to connect workplace drug testing as a violation of an employee's rights. DZOs own dzs so they can make money. Drug tests cost money. If a DZO is willing to commence drug testing, they must feel that the benefit outweighs the cost. It is their bussiness. Theirs to run as they see fit. If you don't like it, as an employee, find a job somewhere else. If you don't like it as a jumper, don't jump there. I plan to start working at my DZ this year and the "drug testing" rumor has circulated every year I have jumped there. I really don't care what they do as long as it is made clear to me what is going to happen ahead of time. We like to think of the dz we jump or work at as "ours". It isn't. The people that run drop sones are saints. They endure fun jumpers who feel the sport owes them something for sticking with it, and prima dona staff who think they should write the rules. Without them, we would all be sitting on the ground. Methane Freefly - got stink?

Matt, My name is John. I was the one congratulating you on your survival. Just a thought, maybe this should be re-posted in incidents. The incidents forum is not neccessarily for events that end in a death, but bad situations that can be learned from. Kudos once again on coming through alive. If you ever show up at x-keys again, ask for Daless. I would be proud to jump with you. For those reading this thread, one thing that should be mentioned, that I think Matt is too modest to do, is the incredible way that he handled the situation after the fact. I have seen skydivers in fist fights over smaller matters. He didn't scream, yell or act with any animosity towards the other skydiver. It needs to be noted that Matt is a stand up dude! You have to stop in at X-keys in NJ. It is a great dz! The dz owns a super otter, a Skyvan, a cessna caravan, a cessna grand caravan, a steerman bi-plane and a helicopter. We have a great balance of freeflyers and flat flyers. If you stop by around july 4th, we usually run a beach boogie to the jersey shore( D required). On a good summer weekend we are flying over 40 loads! The only limit on the number of jumps you can make a day are how fast you can pack! Also, we love to party and light things on fire! http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,3959,562226,00.asp Kevin, Secure is a relative term. And we tend to know about most of the flaws in linux because they are exposed imediately upon finding them. MS covers any hole they find and waits until it is exploited to notify the public. Methane Freefly - got stink?

Never ask an old paratrooper how many jumps he has
jdfreefly replied to jdfreefly's topic in The Bonfire
I met a friends grandfather. He was like, "Hey gramps, this is Daless. He is an avid skydiver. (to me) Gramps was a paratrooper in WW2. (Back to the old man) Daless has over 800 jumps!" Then I open my mouth and ask for a big slice of humble pie. "How many jumps do you have?" The old man grins: "I only have 1......... .... .... Normandy." Respect your elders. One day, you will realize that this was the best month of your life. The month you were saved from a doomed relationship. The month you realized that the things you care about(ie your cat) are what really matter. The month you realized that a new rig is more important than eating Methane Freefly - got stink?

When I had around 100 jumps, I was jumping a spectre 170. I hooked the hell out of it!!!! Although it is an extremely forgiving canopy, keep in mind that it can still kill you! I nearly managed to break myself under it more than once! With that said, have fun and keep going at a comfortable pace. And for the record, a good swoop under any canopy, is one where you finish and think, "Damn that was fun!" If you enjoyed it, it was good. It is when they start getting boring..... It should be the skydiver's law. Got my new Crossfire in the mail on Friday...we all know what that means... Nothing but clouds and rain on sunday. Oh well, at least I don't have to rush through hooking it up. Methane Freefly - got stink?

Bill, You forgot to mention the number one catalyst for injuries at the WFFC. GOLF CARTS!!!!!!!!!!!! In my three years at the WFFC I have had more friends hurt on golf carts then while skydiving. Also, look out for the guy with 75 jumps who tells you he is great head down but kind of shaky in a sit. He is there every year. Although he may look different than the year before, he still flies the same. Methane Freefly - got stink?
