Any one know where I can get a dbox to protect this baby. I have the ability to make one myself, but I would like it for Peurto Rico and I don't know if I will have the time to get it done by then. I looked at bonehead's site, and I didn't see any thing for still cameras. Is anyone out there making something like this yet? Methane Freefly - got stink?

I was under a safire 149 loaded around 1.5 at between 200 and 300 jumps, and I nearly killed myself under it twice but did it without getting injured. I went to a crossfire 119 around 500 jumps and never had any problems. The lessons learned served me well under the higher loading. I did finally hurt myself however, under a velocity 111 when I dropped a toggle on final. I had around 1400 jumps at the time. Methane Freefly - got stink?

Well said. If you ever swoop and all of a sudden a surprised by someone who "came out of no where!" you need to either practice out away from traffic or try to stay in the air longer so you can land last. If you are flying the faster more responsive canopy, it is your responsibility to see the whole sky and avoid others. I agree that the low man has the right of way. But I also thing, that when youare flying a postage stamp, and claim to be an accomplished canopy pilot, you should make allowances for people on slower moving canopies. It is ok to get annoyed but it is no reason to get pissed and throw a shit fit. When someone sets up for a straight in, or holds in breaks, and they do it enough that I feel the need to say something, this is how I usually start the conversation: "You have every right to fly your parachute the way you were doing it, and you have just as much right to that piece of sky as I do. But just so you know, you are moving real slow through a very popular area. Other people are trying to do high speed landings through here. How would you feel about setting up a little deeper?" And I do so in as accomodating a manner as possible. If they don't agree, I make a note of their canopy colors and try to remember the next time I see them in the air, at least then I know what to expect. But would you believe, even with that nice, well rehearsed speech, people have still told me to fuck off? Methane Freefly - got stink?

Another thing you can do when chasing someone is try to turn them. When someone is back sliding, don't just chase straight at them, chase to one side. Often people who don't realize they are back sliding do have heading control. If you chase to one side, they will keep adjusting so they are facing you. This will keep them backsliding in a circle and prevent you from drifting into the previous or next group if enough seperation was given. If they are backsliding so hard that you can't get to them fast enough to make them turn, well you probably shouldn't be jumping together yet, but if you find yourdelf in this situation, simply stop chasing them. Continuing to stay with them just convinces them everything is ok, and it puts 2 people where they shouldn't be instead of just one. Methane Freefly - got stink?

Need opinions on lenses for the canon 20D
jdfreefly replied to jdfreefly's topic in Photography and Video
I don't mind spending $800 on a good lens if it will give me great results. I do mind wasting $100 on a lens that will only be used as a paper weight. Thanks for the info guys....keep em coming. Methane Freefly - got stink? -
What age will you stop skydiving if any.
jdfreefly replied to reddevil1's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I voted the max 120-130. The real answer is, when I think I've beome a danger to others. As long as I think my age doesn't pose a greater risk to anyone but myself, I will keep skydiving. Methane Freefly - got stink? -
Need opinions on lenses for the canon 20D
jdfreefly replied to jdfreefly's topic in Photography and Video
Just curious what any of you guys with more camera experience think. I would mostly be shooting freeflying fun jumps and stuff like that. Should I get a 15 mm fisheye or a 20 mm super wide angle? I am of course, open to any other recommendations. If I get one of those, would they be suitable for taking pictures at things like me nephew's birthday party or should I get the standard package with 18-55mm lens too? Basically I am looking to save $100 by getting just the body and avoid paying for a lens I will never use, if the lens I use for skydiving will be good enough for casual pics on the ground. Any help? On New Years day, I made my first jump since my accident and I thought my feelings on this may be helpful to others out there. A few facts first! My injuries: Broken left heel bone Broken left fibula Broken tail bone Severe dislocation of the left foot Severe contusion in the general ass area on the right side. My current condition: The spot where I had the contusion is still a little sore and hurts when I spend a lot of time on my ass. The left leg is, I would say, about 60%. I can walk ok and even run for short distances. But if I spend more than an hour on my feet, it begins to ache something fierce. Christmas shopping was not fun. My gear: Crossfire 119 loaded at around 1.8 Pd 113 Reserve with a 1.9 loading Other info: After my accident, I dropped from 220 to 185. I have since gone back up to 190-195. I was not hurt on my gear. When I was finally ready to jump, everyone had input on what I should do. Many people thought I should upsize. I should do a straight in approach, etc. In the end, I decided to jump my gear, and, to fly it the best way I know how. I have over 1000 jumps on that canopy, and I know it like an old friend. Nearly all of those jumps, I landed with some sort of front riser approach. I had played with straight in approach, but without a doubt, I have more experience landing that parachute off of a front riser turn than any other way. In the end, I felt that it was ludicrous to jump gear I was unfamiliar with, or to fly in a manner I would only fly in special circumstances. I even considered putting on lead to get my exit weight back to where I was used to having it, but that was just me over thinking things. Do what you know. The jump went great and the landing was tip top. I will admit that I went with a very conservative, gentle, front riser carve, rather than a snappy turn. I think that coming back and jumping after a serious injury is something not to be taken lightly. But, for anyone out there getting ready to do it, I will tell you this; Listen to everyone's input, weigh it carefully, and then make your own decision. Don't be pressured into doing something you don't want to do, whether it is flying a different canopy, or jumping before you thing you're ready. Just like before, you are responsible for your skydive. Have fun. Also, a special thanks to Clark, who had with me, this conversation: Clark - "Just remember, it's all still in the same place." Me - "Huh?" Clark - "Your handles, the landing area, they didn't move any of it. It's all still in the same place it was." ... or something like that. Methane Freefly - got stink?

The rage is just an extension of an old technology. The design may very well be the next great thing in todays swoopology, but it's limits are not very far ahead of the current models out there, that is assuming its limits are ahead of the others at all. You missed my point. My point is, that at some time, and I think we are very close to it now, we will see a plateau in the distance achieved. Once that happens, it will not be until some new, as yet unknown, advance in materials science will cause another huge surge in the field of swoopology. I do not think we will see 500ft swoops anytime soon, but then, I have been wrong before. Methane Freefly - got stink?
-
I think we are going to see a plateau for about 7-10 years, and then some new technology will come out that will cause another explosion forward in swoopology. I think that technology will be something along these lines: A material that can be folded but will retain a memory of the shape it wants. The nose portion of the ribs will be made of this material, making parachutes a semi-rigid wing that can be folded into a container. ps - I have trademarked the term swoopology. Any use of the term swoopology without the express permission from my fat ass will result in a stern talking to. I may even make you go sit in the corner, assuming you haven't spent the whole day there already with your assed out flying skills. Methane Freefly - got stink?

Did you ever wipe out while skiing and going really fast? It isn't the best idea but it can be done. The thing is to keep your body tucked up and roll with it. It's when you start sticking arms and legs out at odd angles that things get messy. If you hear a loud snaping sound from one of your extremities, it usually means you're doing it wrong. "I would think it would be more effective to simply extend the existing stabilizers another inch or two. " Personally, my opinion is that the less parasitic drag the better. I think the company that does that really small stabilizer has the best idea going. There feeling was that the stabilizer is an outdated idea and does nothing but increase drag. I find it remarkable however that the company offering a slimmed down stabilizer, which reduces parasitic drag compared to other canopies with full sized stabilizers, is also offering a canopy with "winglets" which would do nothing other than increase parasitic drag. Am I the only person that finds this to be a bit of a contradiction? Methane Freefly - got stink?

I will agree that I have no means to judge your experience other than by reading your posts, of which there are many. But you also, have no way of gauging my experience other than my posts, of which there are very few. You indicated that my opinion is a very poor one. My opinion is based on input from people who are consistently at the top of the pack in canopy competitions around the country. It is also based on input from people with advanced degrees in aeronautical engineering. Are you basing my perceived lack of experience on my lack of jumps? It can't be years in the sport because I have been in this world 2 years longer than you. I just didn't have the time or the money when I started. Most of my jumps have been done in the last 2 years, now that I have more time and more money. Those "canopy warts" are an interesting idea, but they have no effect, especially when you consider the fact they depend on internal pressure to maintain their shape, which is dependant on speed, which is exactly what is missing at the time that they supposedly give benifit. I feel I have sufficiently floccinaucinihilipilificated the idea of winglets. Methane Freefly - got stink?

"the traits these winglets produce are not ones desired in the Xaos line" -- yeah, more drag with no benefit, as I said, it's a gimick, and that may be my opinion, but a lot of people with more talent and experience than you agree with me. Methane Freefly - got stink?

That is what marketing people call a gimmick. It is a useless thing that is advertised to make people believe they need that product. Methane Freefly - got stink?

Happened to a friend on a velo 111, he landed it on rears , stalled it and landed on his ass. He was ok, but he said next time he is on something that high performance, and the breakline snaps, it is going bye bye. Methane Freefly - got stink?

Pharmacists refuse to fill prescriptions for birth control
jdfreefly replied to headoverheels's topic in Speakers Corner
Have you been to a pharmacy lately? There is a plaque on the wall detainling how they may substitute at will any prescribed drug with a cheaper generic without notice unless you or your doctor specifically state that they may not. If I owned a pharmacy, I think it would be up to me to sell whatever I pleased. The people would vote with their dollars and that would be that. However, if I owned a pharmacy and an employe decided that they felt a drug prescribed was amoral and refused to do it, I would first fire them and then sue them for the damage they did to my reputation in the community. If possible, in this particular incident, I would offer a settlement that allowed them to fulfill their financial obligation to me with 40 hours of community service in the local planned parenthood....pretty much because I am a dick head. Ok, I'm sold! I have 4 reserve rides, all of which were in some way related to a break fire. Where do I buy em? Methane Freefly - got stink?
