Time magazine poll - Should skiers be required to wear a helmet for safety?
Jewels replied to peek's topic in The Bonfire
I am a strong advocate for helmets, but I wouldn't mandate them. Along with that position, though, I also believe that I shouldn't be penalized for enhanced injuries that someone may sustain if we are in an accident and they aren't wearing a helmet. For example, the person who hits a motorcyclist who has elected not to wear a helmet shouldn't bear the full liability in a civil court if that person dies when they might have lived had they been wearing a helmet. In giving people the freedom to choose whether to wear a helmet, I would also expect them to assume the financial risks of their choices as well. TPM Sister #102 -
This article: http://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/03/18/brain.injury/index.html?iref=newssearch mentions the "talk and die" syndrome. I don't think they've officially concluded that this is what happened, but it certainly seems to be part of the speculation. TPM Sister #102

Go, Lisa! Say something exciting so we can see you hit new milestones in posting!!

Yes! I do that. And I'm also convinced that the more you want said item, the further away the point of origin. If you REALLY want it, it's guaranteed to, at some point, have to travel by camel. Whatcha waiting for? TPM Sister #102

ROFL! Sonny, that's nuthin'. I turned 40 this week and haven't quite picked out my racer-style walker yet, but I'm thinking I might like something eliptical while I can still swoop with it. TPM Sister #102

So . . . in other words, maybe my pet peeve should've just been "road rage." I hope you really are just having a bad day. I'm not actually driving in your lane, you know. it's not personally directed against you. That's cool. It just came across differently via internet. TPM Sister #102

Uhh, thanks. I know people get irked by drivers in the left lane. In Colorado, the left lane on the highway is really supposed to be used just for passing, not traveling. People don't really use it that way, though, although I try to. Still, if I'm going faster than the traffic in the right-hand lane but not exceeding the speed limit, I think using the left lane is okay. Oh--and for safety reasons, perhaps the SPEEDERS should slow down. If you're going so fast that the slow speed of other drivers is a danger on the highway, perhaps the slow drivers aren't the problem. TPM Sister #102

I loved Alpharetta! Congrats on the move. I hope you find something quickly on the job front. TPM Sister #102

- Not lining up paper so it's straight before stapling; - Leaving staples that you've pulled out lying around on the counter instead of dropping them in the trash can that's less than a foot away; - People who ride your bumper because they don't like the speed you're going. The speed limit is the same in the left lane as it is in the right. I don't habitually drive in the left lane on the highway in the first place, but even if I'm there and just going the speed limit, get off my fender! I pay taxes to use the roads too--both lanes of it. - Men who wear the waist of their pants somewhere half-way down their rear ends or women who think that low cut pants are sexy but don't also notice that their muffin top negates all that. - Restaurants that turn off the hot water in the bathrooms. Come on, how sanitary is that??? TPM Sister #102

Things like this always make me wonder what historians of the future will think when they discover things like this. I can just envision some interpretation of a new religion involving chicken sacrifices and a smiling Colonel Sanders god overseeing the process. TPM Sister #102

Happy Birthday! Turn up the heat in the house to make it feel more like Mexico, and celebrate! I hope it turns out to be a good day. TPM Sister #102

Glad you're (relatively) okay. Again. Seriously, do we need to wrap you in bubble wrap for your own safety? TPM Sister #102

I realize that many people are much more high tech than I am and that they are all intimately acquainted with their GPS systems. Still, when I moved to Georgia a few years ago, I made up a set of 3 x 5 cards with directions to some of my most frequently visited places, so that I could just keep the cards in the car and pull out the appropriate one whenever I wanted to go somewhere. I know you said you're providing a map, but the 3 x 5 card method worked well for me because I'm terrible at reading maps. TPM Sister #102

Bolas, with all due respect, I don't think I can completely agree with you. I understand what you're saying about "don't do it anymore," but that's the problem with the addiction--it's just not that cut and dry. My cousin tried over a period of decades to "beat it and don't do it anymore," and she couldn't. Believe me, she was one strong-willed lady. It wasn't a lack of commitment or effort on her part. She would clean things up and the world would improve for a time, and then it would fall apart again. It was a pattern that she repeated over and over. Did I resent her for it? Yes, sometimes. But I also understood that it wasn't just a matter of deciding to change things. Sometimes it really does require something more. TPM Sister #102
