  1. 40K feet is nuthin, you don't even need a pressure suit. 40 kilometers, on the other hand, is more than 120,000 feet. There were a few people who were trying to make an attempt this year, but nobody even got off of the ground. Kittinger's 102,800 foot record from 1960 still stands.
  2. I'm glad to see that Gary got reelected. I also note that a certain special somebody didn't get elected, and that's A-OK with me.
  3. I remember Clinton, and his mother. One of the days I'm gonna get a tandem rig, go to Oz, and teach that boy to skydive! I remember that remiandkaren became Remster last year. Spectre230 was before my time, but I've heard references to him. I don't remember Biguns at all.
  4. Spectre230 hasn't posted since September 2001. I'm gonna nominate, ummm, FallingMarc, just to get him back on the forums.
  5. I've written about 3/4 of a skydiving version of Blink 182's The Rock Show. Change "Rock Show" to "Drop Zone" for a rough idea. A lot of the rest of the song already fits skydiving pretty well ("Acting stupid, getting drunk / With my best friends / I couldn't wait for the summer"). I finally went and found the complete lyrics, so maybe I'll finish it up soon.
  6. D'oh. I found the thread that I mentioned in my earlier post here. I spelled hooknswoop wrong when I was searching. Looks like I remembered wrong. Sorry folks.
  7. Edit: I was wrong, feel free to disregard this post. See the link in my next post. I think it would be master rigger territory. My interpretation is based on Poynter's Parachute Manual, Vol II., section 2.0. Poynter states: This indicates to me that any alteration must be performed by a master rigger, regardless of whether the component is TSOed. This position was backed up by another thread in this forum, which I can't seem to find right now. Of course, I see it interpreted the other way in real life. I had a senior rigger alter my main deployment bag, which would seem to be a no-no by the letter of the law. That said, I'm only a rigger wannabe, so don't stake your life on this.

    Geocaching

Why was I not surprised to see a cache placed by quade?

    Geocaching

Head over to geocaching.com and punch in your ZIP code. I just ran the one in your profile (55337). Here is a map of the caches in your area, with the bullseye symbol centered on the zipcode. It looks like you have tons of local caches. I counted 16 within five miles. You are lucky.

    Geocaching

For me, it's motivation to go outside and walk around in a forest preserve for an afternoon. Finding the caches is fun, but sometimes the journey is even more fun.

    Geocaching

It's been going on plenty long enough without people stealing them. Even if somebody wanted to destroy a cache, they would have to first own a GPS receiver, and then they would have to be motivated to actually go out and find them. Besides, the contents of the caches usually aren't very valuable. If you just want to do some petty vandalism, it's a heck of a lot easier to drive around with a baseball bat and smash some mailboxes. Myself, I'm at two found, 4 planned for tommorrow, and one really damn frustrating one that I just can't find.
  12. First, I notice that "cunt" isn't censored anymore. Now back to the topic: It depends on who I'm around. When I'm with my degenerate friends, I swear all the time. Around customers, employers, and grandmothers, never. Immediate family, occasionally and mildly (damn, crap, etc.). In social situations, it depends entirely on who I'm with. If I've met you before, I might swear occasionally. I already mentioned that I swear all of the time around good friends. If I have never met you before, I will not swear in your presence, period. It isn't a conscious decision, it's just the way it comes out.
  13. THANK YOU! OK, but you have to agree that on every stretch of road there is a speed at which a given vehicle will become an unacceptable danger. So my question to you is, how would you propose that we fairly punish these dangerous drivers without speed limits?
  14. Right, I wasn't clear about that. He maintains that it was banned in the past, but the ban has since been lifted. Did I mention that my friend doesn't really understand logic? Like if the government had unconsitutionally banned a film and nobody complained, why would they lift the ban all of the sudden?
  15. Sorry to drag this thread more off topic, but... I have a friend who is convinced that Boondock Saints was banned in the US because it was offensive to Catholics (as in censored, suppressed by the government). He was on the edge of turning a fun argument into a shouting match when I walked away from the argument a week ago. Does anyone have any source that mentions this? I can't find one single source that supports his position, or even mentions it in passing. The only thing I can find is a mention of a "censored" version in Oz and Canada to avoid the equivalent of the American NC-17 rating (the human shield in the elevator and the lamp through the head were removed, apparently).
  16. narcimund is neck deep in all things Internet; I'd try sending him a PM. I dunno about hosting requirements or anything, but his company might get bulk discounts on registrations.

    High/Low

High - Finding two new geocaches today. Low - Getting my grades for the fall semester.

    Rantoul

I will probably be there. I'm doing summer school in order to graduate in 4 years, so I'll only be 20 miles away.
  19. Call the cops. Outside of killing the dog (or your neighbors) it's probably the only way to get results. Young adults can be such assholes.
  20. It is fun. Many of the caches are located in forest preserves, so walking is usually a viable option. Right now I'm in the 60030 zip code for Christmas break. There are tons of caches around here that I can drive to and then walk the rest of the way. Once I'm back at school (61081), the caches are more spread out and I won't have a car, so I'll be riding to let me cover more territory.
  21. I want to get back down to my high school weight. It's been a year and a half since the State of Illinois forced me to excercise 5 days a week, and I'm in the worst shape of my life right now. I've even got a plan on how to do it: A Garmin GPS, and handlebar mount, and this site.
  22. I've made my share of mistakes, but I don't think that I would go back and avoid any of them. My experiences make me who I am, and I wouldn't want to change that.
  23. I'll probably be at a party in Racine, WI. Maybe there'll be somebody to kiss, but I'm not holding my breath. If I'm not too hung over the next morning, I'll cruise on over to Sky Knights and try to get a few jumps in. If that doesn't work out, I'll grab the GPS and go geocaching.
  24. "Reaper Cam"? That's a video tape one can buy at stores like Square 1? You can buy it at gear-store.com. I wouldn't recommend the tape, my review has been posted in Talkback. If you are really interested, you might want to check the classifieds

    Jump Numbers

only about 50 this year. Considering that I did about half of my student jumps, bought a rig, and am a full time student, that ain't half bad.
