Here's a TMI moment for y'all: First time I ever got to second base was in this very same arcade/skating rink, after junior prom.

Yeah, the winery thing and Laughlin.

I didn't. I did notice that Quade is all over this issue, though.

I recently saw a video of a vladiball in action. It was moving all over the place, more than any spaceball that I've seen. It should be noted that I haven't jumped with the ball, I don't have anywhere near enough skill to try, so this is really just a comparison between a bunch of videos. Also, one experienced jumper on the ball jump (who has jumped with a different ball in the past) commented that the ball was difficult to catch, and that only one person on the dive managed to catch it.

This was the point that I was trying, unsuccesfully, to make. Nobody has to give any money to any of the unfound money sites (many of which are extremely shady). It's easy and quick to do all of the research yourself. That said, most of the people listed as having unclaimed money haven't claimed it for a reason, usually because they are dead, or in jail, or otherwise stopped reading their mail or sending in change of address cards. There were several hundred entries for my name at foundmoney.com. My own (free) search found that exactly zero of them are for me. My immediate family members also all had 15+ hits on their name. Again, none of them were actually for my family. I found this out in 20 minutes at Illinois' unclaimed money site, for free.

What an odd thing to say. Are you suggesting Michele has a financial interest in this site? I really doubt it. I doubt Michele has any financial interest in those sites. The sites themselves sound like infomercials to me.

This smelled like a scam to me. I took a look around and found an interesting link, and an interesting quote: Try searching for "unclaimed money scam" or "foundmoney.com scam" for more info. I could only find negative or neutral reviews (the neutrals being similar to the quote above). This just smells too much like an infomercial to me.

0:0:0 I'm planning on heading up to Sky Knights next weekend if the weather is good. I know there are DZ.commers that jump there (Dumpster, ladyskydiver), but I never seem to meet any of them.

This is a quality Stephenson novel. Not quite as good as Snow Crash, but better than Diamond Age and Zodiac. His publisher has also recently resurrected his long out of print first novel, The Big U. I need to get my hands on that. The last I had heard about Quicksilver was that it would be released in Q1 2003. Unfortunately, I just checked and it looks like it will be released in three parts (this is not unfortunate), and the first part will be released in July 2003 at the earliest (this is unfortunate). QS will be sort of a prequel to Cryptonomicon. The paperback Cryptonomicon has a short excerpt from QS which reveals...[snip]. I'm not gonna blow the secret. PM me after you've read the book and the excerpt if you can't figure it out yourself Good info about Stephenson and a link to some excellend questions about CN (which you should only read after finishing the book!) here.

I got Poynter's Manuals for Christmas, so I've been opening to random sections and reading in between rounds of GTA: Vice City. I'm anxiously awaiting Quicksilver by Neal Stephenson.

When I'm at college: 1.5-2 hours to Archway depending on who is driving, the weather, etc. When I'm at home: 1-1.5 hours to Sky Knights, 2 hours to SDC.

No, it would be pretty darn close to the holy grail. 180? No problem, just fly backward. Lew Sanborn was telling me about flying his canopy "in reverse" all the way to landing once. Something to do with a malfunction, maybe a PC over the nose. I think it was a Sharpchuter. Apparently in very deep brakes the canopy will go backwards but still fly well enough to steer and land without major injuries. Paragliders can do something similar (maybe not landable), and even fly one side backwards and the other forwards to do a wicked helicopter move.

At Thanksgiving dinner I made the mistake of mentioning how I don't own an umbrella because I don't want to walk to the store when it's raining and I can't remember to go buy one when it isn't. So now I am the proud owner of four umbrellas in various sizes and colors. I also got GTA: Vice City. Haven't had much time to play it yet, only just finished the first set of Cortez missions. The new vehicles, especially the motorcycles, rock. Nothing like smacking a guy up the side of the head with a golf club and stealing his crotch rocket, popping a 300 foot wheelie between the lanes of traffic, then slamming on the brakes and doing an endo to avoid rear-ending a cop car. All to the soundtrack of authentic 80s music. Asked for Poynter's Vol II, got both because my dad is awesome and noticed that there was a first edition too.

Mega just means one million (roughly), so your camera can take images made up of 4 million pixels. A pixel is just a dot of color, like on a monitor or TV screen. A 4-megapixel image is 2448 pixels wide and 1632 pixels tall. By comparison, your computer monitor probably shows 1024 pixels wide and 768 pixels high.

The MLA guide (used at many, if not most, American schools) says to not use an apostrophe when pluralizing abbreviations. A Writer's Reference, on the other hand, says to use an apostrophe. There is also the APA guide, which I don't have access to at the moment. Of course, these guides are all intended for American English. I personally use the MLA style because it is what I was taught in high school, and it just seems to make more sense.

I was quoted $1.50 profit per fun jumper per load at one smallish DZ with a rented King Air. It's better with tandems and students, but it ain't gonna make the DZO rich anytime soon. The DZO at my home dropzone has to go back to his non-skydiving job during the winter in order to make ends meet.

Follow-up -- Leon Sebek -- Press Clips
indyz replied to quade's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Does anyone know the story on this? Did he stop jumping at some point and then return to the sport, or does he really jump only 10 times a year or so? -
Can you get on a jump plane and jump without a rig?
indyz replied to highfly's topic in Safety and Training
Crap, I didn't realize that the links wouldn't work outside of my University's network. If anybody is interested in the text of the stories, I can post them after I get back to school (second half of January). Either that or somebody with access to a Lexis/Nexis subscription, which should include just about any library or newsroom (Jessica?), could post them. If you are interested in looking them up on Lexis/Nexis, the search terms that I used were "Ivan Lester McGuire" with the date restricted to 1988. -
Another good reason not to do that: I was sitting cross legged with my rig balanced on my legs so that it was tipped up like that (yoke was not on the ground) so that I could put the pilot chute in the pouch. The pouch, or at least the elastic on the mouth, was apparently replaced not to long before I bought the rig so it is really tight. I had two fingers prying the mouth open while I worked the PC in with my right hand. My fingers slipped and WHAP, I punched myself right in the nose, and hard. Glanced around the hangar, didn't look like anybody saw me hit myself, finished packing and made a note to never do that again.

I don't think it's scary, just the natural balance of a college skydiving club. I can afford to do about 30-40 jumps a semester and probably a little more than that over the summer, so I'll be able to do about 100-120 jumps a year or so from now on, which will put me at less than 400 jumps by the time I graduate on the four and a half year plan. Students typically just don't have the the time and money to do a lot of jumps, and they are only around for 4 years, which translates into low jump numbers. There are exceptions, though. A guy from our club who took the FJC with me in September 2001 is taking the couch course and S/L-I course this January, he's already bought two rigs (had the first one for less than a year, sheesh). He makes the money come from somewhere because it's what he loves to do. Where there's a will, there's a way, I guess.

I have consciously taken a deep breath a few times in freefall, to clear the cobwebs when I was having trouble getting into a formation, or spinning in a sit, or whatever. I also just tried to hold my breath and I only got to about 20 seconds without noticeable discomfort, and I couldn't hold it anymore at 45. So yeah, it's safe to say that I breathe in freefall.

Do you like Huey Lewis and the News?

The best of Buddy Holly. True Love Ways is on now, Rave On is up next. It's good stuff.
