    Red Rover Code

I've run Baudot from a bunch of different directions and didn't get anything, but I'm pretty sleepy so maybe I missed something. I've basically ruled out Morse code as well, but I wouldn't discount some other variable character length encoding scheme. Where the hell did you find this? Can we safely assume that it contains a text string of some sort? I'd hate to do all of this work only to find out that it's a binary representation of pi or something.

    Red Rover Code

Baudot code maybe? That uses five bits per character.
  4. Heh. I got a 14 out of 100 on a discrete math midterm. B minus! The adjustment was so extreme that the high scorer (70-something) didn't have to do any homework or even take the final to get an A in the class.
  5. I'll tell my friends. I probably won't tell my family because my Mom gets really freaked out about these things and probably wouldn't take it very well.
  6. I understood the concept of a fallacy (and even knew the particular reason why the proof I posted what invalid) before I posted to this thread.
  7. The chapter of the book that I copied that from ends with the sentence: "Used unwisely, zero has the power to destroy logic."
  8. Taken from Zero by Charles Seife: a = 1 b = 1 b^2 = ab #Equation 1 a^2 = a^2 #Equation 2 a^2 - b^2 = a^2 - ab #Subract respective sides of Eq 1 from Eq 2 (a+b)(a-b) = a(a-b) #Factor previous line (a+b) = a #Divide both sides by (a-b) b = 0 #Subtract a from both sides 1 = 0 #Follows from previous since b = 1 2 = 1 #Add 1 to both sides
  9. Read up on "power push overs." If you somehow cause the gyro to go negative G on exit, the rotor will unload and the gyro will go out of control and crash.
  10. Cool, I was wondering if that was a known bug or just a one-off glitch. I did a CRW jump with the Neptune in my pocket and it said I exited it 13000 and pulled at 300.
  11. I've given a "lick pass" to somebody in a fullface. Close, but not really the same.

    MP3 Players

I just did the math, and the "classic" iPods cost about $20 per GB of storage, while the Minis cost almost $63 per GB! Considering that 99% of the time I would have it hooked up to the stereo at home, the radio in the car, or sitting on my desk at work, I doubt if I would ever benefit from the Minis being 2 ounces lighter and a few cubic inches smaller.

    MP3 Players

Damn. I was really hoping that the 2GB/$100 rumor would be true. Now I'm trying to figure out why I would spend $250 for 4GB when I could get 15GB for $300 (yeah, I know, the mini is smaller).

    SWOOP and SHOOT?

A DZ down south somewhere (keep in mind I'm from Illinois, so "south" is anywhere below the Great Lakes) has an annual "chute and shoot" event. I think I saw an article in Parachutist.

    Neptune

It's the latest version of the software that runs on the Neptune. It fixed a bunch of stability problems. Alti 2 is claiming that version 2.0 will be out in the next 10 days. Edit to add: I would have no problem recommending a Neptune to somebody who planned on using it primarily as a visual altimeter. I've never used mine as an audible, so I don't really have an opinion on that.

    Weird Math Puzzle

This is the problem that my discrete math professor used to point out that "discrete math is tricky, and if you try to use common sense it will bite you in the ass."
  20. 0:3:0 Winter is finally upon us in northern Illinois / Southern Wisconsin. If previous years are any indicator, I'll be doing pretty much the minimum to stay current until Safety Day.
  21. And another pic here. It's a polar projection of a panoramic mosaic, showing the entire lander/rover and 360 degrees of the Martian surface.
  22. Low quality screen grab from NASA TV here. Spaceflightnow is probably one of the best sources for photos for the time being.
  23. They've got pictures. They look very clear, the rover, the horizon, and everything in between is clearly visible in the photos. Awesome. Oh yeah, telemetry looks good across the board.
