  1. You might be able to attach the clip to the chin strap where it splits into a Y near the ear. The clip can also be used with on your goggle strap.
  2. I sent the buyer a copy of the letter that I sent to the seller, along with some comments and other information. The seller knows perfectly well that the Cypres can't be used in the US (I gave him the specific section in the FARs), and yet he implies that it is up to the buyer to decide if they want to use it. I agree that a skydiver that buys the item should be familiar enough with the FARs and BSRs to know that something is fishy. However, when I contacted the high bidder on the last auction, it turned out to be the spouse of a skydiver who didn't now the legalties and (in my opinion) couldn't be reasonably expected to know them. She was intentionally misled, IMHO.
  3. Therein lies the problem. It has a 2002 inspection sticker on it, and it was made in '94, so odds are it will never end up back at the factory. I sent the seller this letter: I received no reply, and the auction was not updated. Most riggers would no doubt choose not to install the unit if they knew full story, but I doubt that most riggers check every serial number on every piece of gear that comes through their loft. Edit: I mean I sent the letter to the seller, not the buyer.
  4. It's just what it sounds like, a line ends up over the canopy and causes it to deform. From there, it can fly poorly, spin, or just plain not fly at all. The usual cause of line overs seems to be letting the nose get around the brake lines when packing. Tom Aiello has a video and some stills of a lineover (left brake line) on a BASE jump here.
  5. I need to. I really hated having gym every day in high school, but in the year and a half since I graduated I've gained fifteen useless pounds. D'oh.
  6. Yeah, I just went and checked Roys. Prices seem to be down from three months ago. Forgot to add: 170s and 190s are an extra $123, and 210s and 230s are an extra $228.
  7. Damn, when I emailed Pisa in July they referred me to a US based dealer that wanted $1000 for stock.
  8. I've heard that a Spectre has at least as much glide as a Sabre. I've made it back from a couple of pretty long spots with mine. Make sure you check the classifieds here and at Enclave. You could also post want ads. Ask the dealer at your DZ to keep their eyes open for what you want as well. I looked for more than a month to find a 170. I ended up getting lucky and finding a 300 jump Spectre for $800 in the DZ.com classifieds. The best I could do on a new Hornet (I couldn't find any used, in any size) was just under $1000 for stock colors. A little hint, but you can buy some Sharpie markers and color the lines yourself. I did it to my Spectre and it really did speed up packing.
  9. No, you may not. I'd go with a dual processor G4, TiBook, or iMac (in decreasing order of preference, and not coincidentally, price). Now Brandon, I happen to have a Mac at work that needs an upgrade but the head IT weenie (my boss), won't caugh up the cash.
  10. Pull before 10 seconds or so are up. Ask your instructors, they might want at least an x second delay, but not more than y seconds.
  11. Something, nothing, everything? I doesn't really matter, it was just a device to keep the plot moving.
  12. I'd say playing on the internet when you are getting paid to work isn't cool, whether it's boobies or skydiving stuff! There are exceptions to the rule. I'm allowed to surf at work if I don't have anything to do, but I'm not allowed to look at porn, including bizarre pancake boob fetish stuff. I could get fired, even if it was a legitimate accident. I can't think of a single good reason why a poster shouldn't put "not safe for work" on things that, well, aren't safe for work.
  13. I prefer to empty a bottle of Elmer's white glue into my mouth and run around screaming, but that's just me.

    Weekend Numbers

0:0:0 I finally had money and I didn't jump. But as of Saturday, I'm no longer on of those damned teenagers, so that's cool.

    WTF

rec.skydiving isn't a website, it's basically a forum run on another Internet service called USENET. You can read rec.skydiving on Google Groups, or you can have somebody show you how to configure a newsreader, which is the equivalent to a web browser, but for USENET.
  16. I can't find it. After a while it stopped showing me flash ads and switched to all animated GIFs, even after I cleared my cookies.

    Hockey Fans ?

I go watch an Illini hockey game every once and a while. Great crowds at those games. I used to be a big Milwaukee Admirals fan, but I haven't gone to see a game in a few years. I'll also watch a Blackhawks or Chicago Wolves game if it's on, and I try not to miss too much of the Stanley Cup playoffs.
  18. The problem that I have with the new auction is that he seems to be implying that it's the buyers decision as to whether or not he wants to use the Cypres. I don't know about Canadian law, but in the US if Airtec declared the Cypres units unairworthy, they can not be legally used under FAR 105.43, section C. Unfortunately, many skydivers do not know the law, and may assume that they can decide if they want to use the unit or not, and while an ethical rigger would not install the unit when presented with the facts, it is unreasonable to expect a rigger to check the serial numbers on every piece of equipment that comes through the loft.
  19. I thought that I had seen that one before.
  20. The first packjob I jumped took me three tries to get in the bag. It looked nasty as hell and opened pretty quick, but it opened.
  21. Remember that guy who put a bunch of pipe bombs in mailboxes a while back? Right after he made the second cirlce in Iowa, somebody on Fark made a joke map that showed a big smiley face of bombs across the country. We all got a good laugh out of it, until a few days later when the FBI caught the guy and found out that he was actually trying to make a big smiley face.
  22. how can you not get addicted to a language with commands like ($m =~ /\(\d{3})\-\d{3}\-\d{4}/)
  23. Yes yes yes. I used to drink a case a week, but I've cut my intake in half.
  24. I think that (assuming the laws are in TN are the same as many other states) from a legal standpoint the guy should walk, but morally I don't think the shooting was justified, and it certainly wasn't self defense.
