  1. As someone who went through AFF in 1993, the only canopy control training I got was, "The left yellow handle makes it go left and the right makes it go right...pull em both to stop..." Most of the stuff I learned was by mistake and watching other people's mistakes. But we still had people selling canopies to underqualified people back then. At 9 jumps I bought a sabre 120 and had it in hand at 25 jumps.....with an exit weight of 185. I think the DZ you jump at Dave has one of the best AFF canopy control training in the US. (that's through 25 jumps...not 7) Even with that program in place it comes down to time constraints sometimes. If the instructor gets his student early, it will be covered more. If he gets his student on a 20 min call, there is less time to cover that. (of course we can cover that while we wait on the cameraman...not you!)...... I completely agree about a lack of continuing training though. I also think that is true across all aspects of jumping. I know there are a good amount of people with 500-2000 jumps that think it is stupid to pay people for coaching. People train to a level that "they" think is good and then level off. Those who want to learn more seek it out and ask questions. Those who don't, don't have to worry about it cause they can still get their license! ------------------------------------ Dave for BOD!! What are the dates for next years canopy control discussions at the dz?

  8. Well, the same way the FAA is 15 years behind the skydiving world, the USPA is just a couple. We have people complaining all over the place about their $50, but how much do you think your regional director makes? Do you think it's worth their time to take 3-4 trips a year to meetings? Not to mention all the regular drama they have in their own region? Most of these people have other jobs/ business that probably makes them a living. I'm pretty sure (except a couple) nobody makes a living being a regional/national director. I'll tell you right now it's not a job I would want. (I would be happy to vote for you Dave!) Have you ever sat in on a USPA meeting?(general question to everybody complaining about the USPA) Do you have any ideal of the topics they discuss? At the S&T meeting last year there were only 8-10 people in there who weren't on the board. Out of those, 3-4 were in there because of discussion that pertained to him. ANYBODY is allowed to attend these meetings AND participate. All those skydivers there....and how many sat in on meetings? One observation I made last year in Jacksonville is there is a wide varity of people on the board. Some are new and on the cutting edge of instructing......some are pissed because we got rid of the S/L JM rating that's outdated. Even if we eventually get a course in place.....it will come back to: 1. Skydivers think they are getting ripped off by the USPA because they have to pay and sit in a canopy class.(Just like people whine about licenses. I've ran across a lot of people lately that have an A license with 500+ jumps) 2. People will continue to have their friends sign off on stuff to save them money. 3. Your not going to change people's minds about wingloading!!!!! PERIOD. Just in the last week I have heard of jumpers with the following: 300 jumps, WL a stilletto at 1.5 80 jumps, WL a pilot at 1.4 130 jumps, WL a stilletto at 1.6 People will continue to get their hands on these and in EVERY instance, they thought they were fine......I'm a good canopy pilot...."BLAH BLAH BLAH". Most of them never sit to think what will happen if when they set up their ("perfect everytime") landing, somebody comes in and cuts them off or somebody runs out in front of them in the landing area. [/rant]

  12. As much as I agree with what you have been pushing for within USPA...it still comes down to the DZ's. The USPA came up with a 25 jump program to prepare a student better for post student status. That program does include "some" canopy control education. But once you get outside of the DZ you jump at....(dave).....you'll realize there are SEVERAL dz's that still only do a 7 jump program and turn people loose. USPA can come up with all types of programs, but it takes the DZ to implement them. If/ when they do some type of canopy control program, there are still going to be a large amount of people who complain about the cost of education and refuse to implement it.
  13. Hello everybody! Just a heads up that the Keys Boogie is a little over 6 weeks away. I talked to Ruth at the Coconut Cay and they are down to about 7 rooms left for that weekend. If you would like to stay there, I would reserve a room ASAP! The number there is 1-877-354-7356. Make sure you tell them you are with the skydivers to receive the discount. I'm trying to get a firm head count on people planning on attending. Please email me and let me know if your going to be there for sure. Also, let me know if your interested in in scuba diving/ reef fishing/ or a trip to Key West later in the week. Several people have asked about the flotation devices. I have found the website below, but not much more than that. You may want to search around for a better deal. I *might* have some for sale or rent and will forward information when I know. http://www.coastalmarineonline.com/coastal/dept.asp?s%5Fid=0&dept%5Fid=160314 Model: Stearns 0340 or 0375 Please don't wait to reserve rooms because they are limited due to the hurricane they had this year. Oh.....and by the way, the ave low and high in Marathon during the boogie: Ave low: 62.9°F Ave high: 76.0°F Looking forward to another great time in the Keys!!! Swoop
