End Cell Closures - Canopy too big due to weight loss?
divnswoop replied to ntrprnr's topic in Gear and Rigging
Sorry Kim, I've been a little testy lately. I've had several cases in the past few weeks where I found a student doing something and when I asked why, they replied, I read it on DZ.com. And I have had a couple come to me saying they saw that I taught them something "wrong" in the first jump course after reading something in these threads. There are things that students should do and then those procedures might change with the changing of gear and experience. But with the way some advise comes across to a student in these threads it can cause a lot of doubt in his instructor/DZ when it is something different than what he learned. What he learned at the DZ is right and proper for their experience and what is posted here might be right for the person asking the question. But sometimes they aren't right for both. I realize this place is hear to ask questions and learn. Hell I learn something everytime I'm on here. I'm just a "little" upset because I have a student that is scared to jump with a cypres now........ worried it is going to kill him. So once again, I apologize. You received some displaced anger, but I still have to say watch giving advice like this...Your not wrong in this case with your gear, but it doesn't apply to everybody... -
Sweeet, so let's design the PERFECT AAD and do it soon...... That way we can start the thread about bitching about it costing $3,000 and get past this one!

End Cell Closures - Canopy too big due to weight loss?
divnswoop replied to ntrprnr's topic in Gear and Rigging
Well Dave, I can't say that thought didn't cross my mind.... but I guess I was trying to avoid a discussion with a student who read on DZ.com that I taught him the wrong way to inflate his end-cells. Students read these forums and take a blanket statement like that to be the truth in ALL cases. I agree that yes it might help one person in one case, or it might be "more efficient?" in one scenario, but I know that "a couple inches" won't open every canopy.(especially large lightly loaded canopies) I guess IMO that there is too much being made of such a minor problem. There are people out there jumping Sabre I's that would LOVE to have end-cell closure. We all should have learned our first day that we should kick out of line twists......grab toggles and inflate end cells/ bring the slider down. I don't see the need to change the pack job and risk the chance of a hard opening or alter the way we wear the gear for something this minor........ pssss Dave.... I noticed that your my little voice in my head when I'm reading some of these posts in Safety, gear, and swooping. I just for some reason keep him in my closet and not let him post! -

divnswoop replied to jumpingbean001's topic in Events & Places to Jump
Yeah Ernie, nobody ever gets hurt in high winds! Your getting enough jumps now to know the weatherman are only right 8% of the time anyway... and if they are right I'm sure we wil have a good time anyway! -
End Cell Closures - Canopy too big due to weight loss?
divnswoop replied to ntrprnr's topic in Gear and Rigging
So you know this to be true with ALL canopies? Including a Safire that ISN'T made by PD? HOw many jumps do you have on a safire at a similar wing loading out of curiosity? -
Does that mean your all in on the first hand??

WHAT? Some of the best things Palatka has to offer is at those shady "other" places!!! -
Why haven't you gotten your B license?
divnswoop replied to peek's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I'm going on my experience the past 13 years traveling the East coast. It's not a steep assumption, it is the way it is. What percentage of people that skydive actually own a Sim's from any year, or have viewed it online. Simple fact is, once you get an A, your not FORCED to work towards any other license unless you want to participate in Nationals or some other boogie. I'm not saying EVERY jumper is like that, but I do feel there is TOO many who neglect further education after an A license. The rant was because of another thread I just read. People who show the ambition to achieve their licenses are normally the people who also strive to learn more about their gear and jumping in general. I did not say that having a B or C is good cause to offer blind advice over the internet. People studying for the test also re-read hard deck altitudes and procedures amongst other things. I agree....There are also people with D-license who can't assemble their 3-ring release, Tandem masters with 1000's of jumps who don't flare the parachute, and the list goes on and on.....That's not what this thread was about though -
Why haven't you gotten your B license?
divnswoop replied to peek's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
YES, it does. It shows that you have studied the SIM's and passed a knowledge test. The more you know about skydiving and your gear, the better skydiver you are. I can't believe how many jumpers out there with 10-200 jumps think they have everything figured out because they can jump and pull. I was looking at a thread in gear and rigging and there were 4 people giving advise, ALL with under 200 jumps. I'm not saying that they all didn't know what they were talking about, but it surprises me how easily people will give advise to other jumpers having as little as 50 jumps. And the amount of jumpers that have little knowledge on how to assemble/ how their gear works is downright scary. -
I talked to the Coconut Cay today and they said some of the hurricane workers have left and they have a couple rooms now if anybody needs them. Any requests for drinks on Sunday night? Keg? Anybody want to hit the bars up for tandems the week before?

End Cell Closures - Canopy too big due to weight loss?
divnswoop replied to ntrprnr's topic in Gear and Rigging
Well.......that's a lot of advice. Personally, I wouldn't do anything different with your pack job OR your gear. I would do what your supposed to do on every single deployment. Unstow your toggles, pump your brakes, and do a controlability check. Closed end cells at that wingloading on that canopy isn't that big of a deal to change everything around..... -

....and I'll offer FREE T-10 rides, towed behind a truck, at midnight, down the runway like last year at this time!!! -
Well at least when you go to jail at this boogie you will be sharing a cell with a bunch of escaped cuban's.....instead of escaped criminals and murderers!!! I WISH I had video of you and BK there intimidating your cellmates!!
-
Really? I've seen video of 3 and witnessed one over my head and in all 4 cases the jumper was closer to vertical than horizontal.... ...But I've only seen 4 bag locks so..........

Some thoughts after the Holiday Boogie
divnswoop replied to johnny1488's topic in Safety and Training
Scary.... I have ran across the same thing the past few months down south though. Unfortunately people with money can hop on ebay, here, or find another jumper that will sell them whatever they want. They "ALL" are talented canopy fliers and are "REALLY" conservative, but they don't seem to get it that when faced with a split second decision, it might cost them their lives. The funniest one was.... Me: Did I hear you right? Your jumping a stilletto loaded at 1.6 with 150 jumps? Them: Yeah, ....but a lot of those are hop and pops flying my canopy. Me: From what altitude? Them: Normally 3-3500.. ....one thing I have noticed is that the majority of these people I run across have never witnessed a landing fatality/ serious injury. After seeing a body hit the ground your prospective changes....
