  1. By the looks of the place.....somebody already beat us to it.. Mike
  2. As far as I can recall, the CYPRES manual actually says that it can fire up to 300ft higher than 750.. If you're using a piece of equipment, RTFM first.. Mike
  3. Damn.....robbing the Craftmatic adjustable, eh? Mike
  4. Freeflier verion: "Hold my beer and get this on video!" "If ya can't fix it with gaffers tape.....fuck it, it's broke!" Mike
  5. Where are you guys staying? From the Orlando area, there are 5 good size DZ's that are within a reasonable drive.. ZHills is awesome, so is Lake Wales - so if those are the two that you stay at the whole time, you'll be happy with 'em.. Hmmm.....wonder if they're gonna have the baloon at Lake Wales for the new years boogie? Mike
  6. That's because I go to different DZ's.....I'm not afraid to travel to others like SOMEBODY I know.. Mike
  7. I'm not trying to undermind what you're teaching him(when did you get your CFI?), so I won't press the issue.....but I will tell you that I certainly don't agree with that philosophy.. Regardless of how much dual given your instructor has(I have well over 1000 in piston a/c, if it matters), he probably taught that because that's how he was taught.. IMO(and in my practical experience), it causes undue risk.. Mike
  8. I hope you didn't take my comment on the issue seriously.....I still use checklists even though I fly 70-80 hours a month in the same type, and I have almost 1000 hours in type.. It's a bit different for us, though - since we have many, many more items on the checklist AND an NFP to accomplish 'em.....but it's definitely a good habit.. IMO, checklists and checking the gear many times before landing are the best habits a pilot can get into.. I re-check the gear at every configuration change, and then on short final as well.....overall, about 5 times before landing.. I've never missed the gear, and I do this to ensure I never will.. Just seeing it happen(while holding short) to a Citation VII was enough to drill that into my head.. Mike
  9. I'll be in Florida this month......and next month.....and the month after that....and....well, you get the idea.. Mike
  10. Just remember.....reducing power, left to right.....adding power, right to left.. Reducing - carb heat, throttle, prop, mixture.. Adding - mixture, prop, throttle, carb heat.. Checklists?! We don't need no stinkin' checklists! Mike
  11. Are you sure you weren't able to stall either one? Maybe you couldn't collapse it......but could you STALL it? I have never had any problem stalling my Sabre2 or my old Spectre.. I never got either one to collapse, though.. Stalling the canopy and collapsing it are two totally different things.. Mike
  12. Sounds like somebody is losing the engine every time they pull the power back(with the instructor on board, of course) and forget something with it.. Hmmmm..........start flying fuel injected or turbines......eliminates that problem.. Mike
  13. But we know that you don't freefly......just flail.. Mike
  14. In this case, I'd call you guys realists.. Mike
  15. I normally do my own pin checks by feel.. Too many times I've seen people open a flap, not even really look, close it back up(or sometimes not), and say "You're good!".. I can check the pin and bridle on the main(just can't tell if the PC is cocked, but then again, I've verified that several times by that point so I'm comfortable with it), and check the reserve pin by feel.. Mike
  16. And that's the reason I don't visit very much anymore.....to much BS goes on.. Hopefully DZ.COM doesn't go all the way to wreck status.. Mike
  17. I'd say it's just something that will come with experience.. I learn early on that back tracking is the best for me.....I can track faster and flatter on my back than on my belly.. Normally I only track on my back during tracking dives, though - unless I need to keep an eye on somebody above me during breakoff.. It's just like anything else you learn to do - it takes practice.. Try just doing a couple dives where all you do is back track.. It would, of course, be best if you had somebody else tracking with you to gauge your speed/sink - but you can work on the basic stability and control by yourself.. It does take some getting used to - you don't normally have to press your legs down in that manner.. Start with your arms straight out to your sides, palms down, and legs straight.. Steer with your torso as you normally would during a track.. Mike
  18. That paintjob was fairly controversial for a while......but, as far as I know, it's still out there.. It's an ATA 727, IIRC.. Mike
  19. Hey man.. Anytime you're gonna be out there, drop me a line and I'll see if I can make it.. I can jump weekdays and weekends, but only every other week due to my work schedule.. Email is Aviatrr@aol.com.. If you're at the DZ, look for a black/maroon freefly suit(made by Merlin suits), black/maroon Mirage or Talon2(both are black with maroon trim, Talon has some blue on the reserve flap).. Another easy way to spot me is one of my canopies.. I have a blue Sabre2(several different shades of blue) and a bright red Nitro with black ribs.. The Nitro really stands out.. Maybe wearing a camera helmet, maybe just a Bonehead(a Bonehead helmet on my bone-head).. There are quite a few of us in the area that jump at Deland some or most of the time.. I jump at primarily Titusville and Deland, with occasional side trips elsewhere.. Mike
  20. Cool.. It's amazing how you can try and try to get something, not even come close, and then all of a sudden it clicks and all goes well.. If you're not doing it already, try wearing a baggy sweatshirt and jeans or shorts(since you guys can't jump in shorts year round like we can ) to help you hold a sit.. Of course, if you have a freefly suit, it's best to learn wearing that so that there's no "transition" when you start wearing the suit.. Mike
  21. If there's anybody that jumps at Aerohio up near Akron, OH, ask Wink about his double mal......ask him to show you the video.. Mike
  22. What's wrong with swimming in Dec? I spent almost 3 hours in the water today, as deep at 120ft.. 72 degrees was perfect..........you trying to tell me that the water up your way isn't that warm? Damn....what makes you want to live there? Mike
  23. I would track for my riggers house or car - whichever is closest.. If neither are within a reasonable distance, I would remove my rig, remove my helmet, all my clothes, and aim for the boarding area.. If nothing else, it would make everybody scratch their head and say "What the fuck was he doing?".. Mike
  24. I have purchased several canopies, a container, a couple of CYPRES, and various accessories from Roy at Rigs&Things ParaService.. I know several people that have purchased rigs from him, also.. I can't recommend him highly enough.. Excellent service and excellent prices.. Don't hesitate to buy from Roy.. Mike
  25. That's the primary reason that CReW canopies don't last anywhere near as long as sport ZP canopies.....they're exposed to the UV for 10-12 minutes each jump rather than 2-3 minutes.....but I'm sure all the grabbing and pulling on the canopies doesn't help much, either..
