No matter how many times I hear that one, it never gets old. IMNSHO, there hasn't been a jump song equal to that one. Skydivers don't knock on Death's door. They ring the bell and runaway... Well, there's lots fo excitment in that option, but the downside is a VERY shitty pension plan. Skydivers don't knock on Death's door. They ring the bell and runaway... It really pisses him off. -The World Famous Tink. (I never heard of you either!!) AA #2069 ASA#33 POPS#8808 Swooo 1717

I thought about that, the academic environment appeals to me, but my degree is in exercise physiology, not fire science. In short, the words on my diploma are the wrong ones for that. In the early years (1920's - 1950's) , we were ignorant of the role of fire in the environment. Because of this, fires were actively suppressed, not only in populated ares, but in the wild as well. This led to the building of a fire load that resulted in more and more catastrophic wild fires. The example that comes to mind is the Yellowstone fire of 1988. This fire was on the order of a 500 year event. Subsequent investigation showed that due to aggressive firefighting operations, the normal role of fire in the wild land was disrupted and allowed the large scale event to happen. I thought about that, but it's really kind of too close to being back in the F.D. Skydivers don't knock on Death's door. They ring the bell and runaway... It really pisses him off. -The World Famous Tink. (I never heard of you either!!) AA #2069 ASA#33 POPS#8808 Swooo 1717

Nah, the Fire Dept. can't afford my consultant rates.

Yeah that crossed my mind ( for about a femtosecond), but in the three hours it takes to burn a structure to the ground, you can chase a brush/wild fire 10-20 miles and not make a dent in it. Besides for a seasonal job, it doesn't pay well. Only if you want to hasten the apocolypse. I'd live under a bridge and eat dog food before I'd manifest. Skydivers don't knock on Death's door. Well, it's done. After 26 years in the Baltimore County Fire Dept., I signed the papers at the retirement office. Badge 1717 has officially 12 shifts left to work. After 5-30-08, I'll be just another civilian. (Not that there's anything wrong with civilians). Now the big question is: what next? At the age of 45, I'm WAY too young to retire to nothing (and besides, my wife has told me that in no way am I allowed to be underfoot all day), so a second career , or grad school, is in order. I was setting up to be a drop zone bum. I have a tandem and coach ratings, riggers ticket, so things were looking like I might be able to do that full time, BUT last november I got a very nasty post-op infection in my left knee, so DZ bum isn't an option right now. I went on an initial interview last week for the position of aquatics director at a local gym (my B.S. is in exercise physiology) , but they tried to bait and switch me into sales ( Of all the things I could see myself doing, sales IS NOT one of them). I'd like to use my degree, but only to work with athletes, not fitness clients. (I'm burned out on working with middle aged guys who, at the age of 50, suddenly discover that they're invisble to women and want to fit into their 20 year old clothes [ and want to get there in three weeks] or the three hundred pound women who want to cry about the fact that their husbands aren't interested in them anymore and then want to cry about having to actually do work to get their bodies back. Been there, done that, got the T shirt.) So, while I have no idea what I'm going to do for a second career, I do know that my first stop will be the big screen store for that 58" plasma I've been looking at.

Are you trying to tell us something? Are you armed? Have you bolted the door? How many hostages do you have? Do you want me to call your mother or next of kin? Or should I just leave some chocolate at the front door and back away slowly? Skydivers don't knock on Death's door. They ring the bell and runaway... Yeah, but whuffos will never be anything but whuffos. They don't get it, haven't got it, never will get it. God only knows what they think. I had a friend who's GF (now former) thought that you went tot the DZ, made one jump than went home. The fight they had when he tried to explain was spectacular. How are you suppsed to deal with that kind of illogic? Also, how do you get around the universal whuffo trait that requires that after entering into some level of commitment, that any and all time must be spent doing whuffo activities? Answer: you don;t. You regaurd all whuffos as if they are members of some wierd cult that worships at the alter of almighty gravity and keep them at arm's length. This is especially true for those with dope habits and kids. Skydivers don't knock on Death's door. They ring the bell and runaway... It really pisses him off. -The World Famous Tink. So far, I've only looked at ASPCA. My vets office said that they see more VPI than ASPCA. But ASPCA is reasonable, so they look best so far. Thanks again.

Wow, thanks a lot. I had no idea.

No, it was pure science. No it was money. All those people in the hospital were there because they are getting paid. The fact that I survived is because those who came before me died and it was the job of science to find put how, why and to keep it from happening again. In my case, I explain it by saying the outcome of my medical incident was exactly what was suppose d to happen. The hospital was designed for restoring the health of those who are sick. Everything went exactly the way it was supposed to. Skydivers don't knock on Death's door. They ring the bell and runaway... It really pisses him off. -The World Famous Tink.
