  2. At one time in the early 70's USPA bought the STC rights for 4 jumpers seat belts for C-182's and some C-180's. You could get it for $20 and your N-number. They might know about others too. Dont forget you have the flap switch cover and deflector if its a U-206. There is also a Cessna sky diver step for under the rear door to rotate it paralell to the fuselage. the inside handle at the front of the rear door must go too. Another guy to try is Joe Weber at Skydive Oregon he does everything like Paul used to.
  3. No one noticed that they had 12A's instead of 10E's doing the flying. The plane from Z-hills was a 10E from the 70's. They had to build the Vega because none existed. All of this is from "Aviation History" I subscribe to. I have jumped both kinds also the 18 Lodestar and Connie 69 and a few C-130s.
  4. USPA has some nice pictures of N3855G a U-206 that a friend took the side off. The least experienced jumper with over 100 jumps wouldnt leave at 2500 feet so the pilot had to land with 3 on board with aeliron and throttle all he had left. Anyway a Cessna can be jumped even with a passenger in the right seat door on and wheel pants.Guesstimate your spot, have the seat forward face backwards. When its time a little right rudder push on the door and stick your left foot on the normal step .It holds the door push your shoulders through and lean forward actually towards the tail and gone.Doing a twoway out of a Mooney is a little harder. Just to let you know a property permission to land doesnt mean a thing if local ordinances will over ride it.Most places wont go along with"If I were to jump ,would you be mad"? Then do it anyway. I know of one pilot doing time for not telling who his jumper was that went into Yankees Stadium. Would your pilot do that?
  5. Ive done a couple of two-ways from them never a solo exit though. I was first in a squatted on the floor The second guy got in over me to altitude. He then crawled back down on the wing facing aft . Then I got up with a foot on either side of the canopy tracks then a hop to the left easily clearing the left horizontal stabilizer as my pin man dove to me for the pin . The pilot only gave us 3500 so it was quick. It was in 1969 at Oxford Mi. at Louie Schrodrer's DZ
  6. I took a woman up for her 40th b-day jump. She said all the rest planned jumpers wouldnt come . Nothing new there. She got video after we landed and walking back she said "I guess I can tell you now I have ADD. After seeing the video she had dyslexia of the mind too.She did everything about as ass backwards as possible. She could never be the worst I've taken but close. We survived to a point of laughing in freefall along with my video guy
  7. Soupy was on Detroit TV WXYZ channel 7 for years You could be in his night time show at the Macabees building or later Broadcast house in Southfield. He did outrageous stuff like Ernie Kovacks. I got to shake hands with him about 1953when I was 11 I was to old for 12 O,clock Comics but to young to pick up all the double meanings of his night show. It sometimes got like "Laugh-in " a day or so later it sunk in. I too remember the stripper incident. He had a bit called the River Boat Gambler aboard the S.S. Kielbasa. Some of his guests were from the original Lone Ranger Sgt Preston of the Yukon and The Shadow from the 1940,s
  8. Gary Those gloves as I remember them were called winter bike riding gloves. the pad was to soften the grip on the handle bars. might check them out.I still like Ice fishing gloves best.Like scuba gloves only $8.00
  9. Bumper jacks went away with the advent of energy absorber bumpers. Those were the ones mounted too horizontal shock absorbers in the frame rails. It meant you probably had a plastic facia over an "Intrusion beam".With this came the scissors jack to be used with jacking points.blah blah blah. It was usually just rear or just in front of the wheel housing for the wheel involved BFD.I almost went off the freeway laughing at a Cadillac owner trying to change a tire with the scissors jack on his luggage to fill the gap for lifting his front bumper.I remember the directions were usually printed near the under hood mounting bracket. Hell to be that stubborn.
  10. There was a jump off the Ambassador Bridge in 1966 or67 by the "One Arm Bandit" Don Parks. They drove out onto the bridge and his friend got out with him. They tied the apex of a 28 foot rag to the rail .The canopy was stuffed in a grocery bag. Don hopped over the rail holding the bag until the break cord snapped. He landed in the Detroit River and was picked up by his boat crew and taken out of sight. He also jumped into a park inside Detroit city limits for the Tigers winning the World Series in 1968. He was was busted for being a traffic hazard. They said there was no law on the books then but there will be tomorrow . We were finally allowed to jump in city limits5 years later
  11. Bob bouquor of SCR was filming with a 35MM movie camera for Dean Martins "Dont Make Waves" .He reportedly died by drowning off the shore of the LA beach area. It sort of conflicts with no water in his lungsand hanging limp under canopy while drifting out to sea. A popular 16MM camera of the day was "N-6 Corsair gun sight "Baa-Baa Black Sheep TV series had all WWII air to air combat shot that way It required a pistol belt like battery holder with D-Batteries soldered in series to power the 24 volt system. You would get your movie back from processing in a week. Then hope there was a projector and a screen where you wanted to show it. Thank god for Ni-Cad Then you only had to wear a cake pan size battery on your chest.Actually bigger than Sony Beta recorder some wore the same way
  12. As I remember it that was all slow motion . For the break-off signal one of the base pulled out There was a scene with normal speed and it wasnt that long. That was Karl's way of doing things. He has a trail plane shooting an exit out of the right rear door of an Otter to see if anyone is paying attention in one of his movies. He also had jumpers going off El-Cap with cameras facing backwards to get the trailers exit. He even jumped Richmond for the Nationals. He was a very nice guy to talk to.
  13. My only jump on a sled was a mal on a cross-bow and the rip cord never got to clear the housing. I recall almost the whole trailing edge had steering lines attached. The tail was split at the C/L about 5or6 inches up. At least 6 lines to each toggle and extremely long cascades. This might help in Identifying that canopy. It was brought to the DZ by a whuffo as payment for a debt by the alledged owner. It remained un-packed in a box under the counter for years after
  14. The -20F was my low limit too. We jumped into a winter carnival for free tickets for the night festivities. The boss handed us a beer oops that grew to a few pitchers . No more jumps and banquet tickets cancelled.I upset alot of people with my Tevas landings in the snow and on ice.I went 35 years of consecutive jump in every month.Having a hangared plane withplowed taxi and runways helps. One hint on fresh snow is to have people stand in the landing area fot depth perception problems {White-Out}to land close to.I had a guy follow me in on landing and was glad I broke my ankle and gave him a landing height to look at while I was mosning and groaning. I also use "Ice -Fishing " gloves from sporting goods stores about $8.00 in sizes too
  15. The reason it was stopped was are almighty USPA board of Directors trashed a motel In the thousands of dollars of repair bills, Thank God Steve and Jane were the diplomats they are and got us back in, Cant say "The Richmond Boogie" without some kind of grin for past memories."Long live "The Boogie" or Boggie as one TpShirt had it.
  16. Capewells "Named after the factory" were first used to be able to inter-change canopies for for damage. Old harnesses had main liftwebs becomong risers with solid links and sewn on lines ,No way to break apart for container or canopy damage. Double shots required pull down the covers squeeze the buttons also while pulling down. Best time was on the riggers table. I only know one guy who did it in air. One shots were on Cross 0Bow piggy backs one motion usually didnt requiring double palm slaps on them .Shot and one halves worked great as previously above posts. R-2s Had flattened tubular webbing with a knob sewn on the end with a velcro wrap.R-3s had a red cover with a hard plastic tube sewn cross wise at the end for gripping to chop. Dont get me started on Frappe -Wraps or Tape-Wells. I used them all except the double shot,s
  17. Terry that was actually a Twin Beech too. As he slid down the top I believe he almost took out the cameraman.I remember guys crawling out on Twin Otters and King Air 200's
  18. That was the tradition at Freakport Sunday night. They were couches that were found on trash days at home and brought one way for "FreakBrothers Convention".There was one incident where one guy driving the school bus with them tied on top got stopped by the cops.He didnt realize all the passengers had crawled out the windows and were sitting on the couches as he drove. Dont know if he got a ticket or just the cop laughing "Dont do it again. They were really into Polyester leisure suits and made the last jump into the buffet serving line decked out "Styling" Think of the hours at Salvation Army and thrift stores to get it perfect
  19. There was another team called "The Cunning Linguists". Also another fine group called "Sphincter Brothers" My group was" Papa Dupa and the Flying Dupas" For those not aware Dupa is Polish for AssHole. It was more fun when manifest had no cluewho or what they were calling for the next load
  20. That sounds like the same place that sells terrorist insurance too. Video insurance is next.
  21. Does any one know the whereabouts of "Naked Wendy" The last time I saw her that way was at "The Richmond Boogie" She also was around SDC. She was on crutches after a few rebreaks to get it back to size after a T-Bone motorcycle accident
  22. I would only ask one more thing. Take me on one more sky dive. I asked the widow of my friend if I could get some ashes. I wanted to get one of those military style plastic ear plug cotainers with chain for rifle range training. That way he could be taken on many jumps after the ashes drop. She said he was in a sealed container that was illegal to open. As long as you pass out "TIC-TACKS at my wake behind "K-MARTS" and sing a real loud "HIM" I'll be happy
  23. For my 60th birthday fund raiser for MS "60for60". I did all 60 of them in 7hours and 20 minutes from between 1500 and 1800. Excapt the last one the sky opened up and I got all the way up to 2200. I did a demo in the rain at 1200 with a PC but we got $5.00 so it was OK. I did the high speed Otter jumps at Rantual, and the Pac 750 low altidudes too Anyone remember the get everything that can fly jumps at Freakport? Roger had a theory all the planes at a single pass would blow the clouds away. You could get "T-Shirts that said something like "I was one of the 207 canopies in the air at Freakport"
  24. I will be 67 on August 8th and have 220 jumps so far this year and 141 are tandems . I am trying to stay at my pace to be near my hero Mike Spurgeon at Lodi Ca. Seems to ne he did his 10000 tandem 3or4 years ago. Thats a whole lot of neck staring.
  25. I built parts for the sesimograph on the moon now. We made 4 sets one remained like a suit case . it was for training walking up and down the lander steps. The second deployed the solar panels training. The third ended up at Neils museum on I-75 south of Lima in Wapwkeneta. The second time I was there 1986. It was strange to see somsthing you made in a museum. It also made it on a USPS stamp.
