Why would anybody jump from a perfectly good airplane
lekstrom10k replied to BHogg's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I usually tell them its obvious your area of expertise is not in aircraft. Then you would know why. I just have to take off in it not land in it. When I last jumped at "The Bridge" ,I told the Tee-Shirt guy. "That you ought to sell "I jumped off a perfectly good bridge" shirts. "Were doing OK as is". Try it and you wont have to go back down in the coal mine on Monday I tactfully replied. As of yet I still havent seen the shirt and he still hopes the canary doesnt stop singing -
To any of you seasoned jumpers. Louis {The Hook } Schroeder .The god father of jump pilots is up from Texas at Port Huron area. He said he will be at the gathering. Knowing Louie I bet we could get him to do a hand stand or two even though he is probably150 years old by now. In case you forgot Marine City Airport is on 26 mile road 8 miles east of I-94 , exit 148 in michigan northeast of Detroit {stops st 8mile}

I put a call into Cliff Alfiche for you should hear soon. Until then Have you checked out Flagler Beach in FL. You might try Mike Johnston the airport manager for Delands airport. He could probably turn some wheels for you

I recall the main purpose of them was to leave thr container in the fighter jet as part of the ejection seat. the pilot would crawl up into his with a harness on. his crew wpuld snap him up with the risres sticking out of the seat. after the flight he would get unsnapped and on his way. Connie Crowton went to now Archway in IL. to get certified as a Para-Plane dealer in late 60's or early 70's. The training first jump altitude was 7500, he only got about 2500and went anyway. The rig had rocket jet ejectors on the main risers he said he new everything right up until he bounced. Bluffing doesnt always make it a good judgement call

I get it as an early C-210 about 1961. It was a retractable C-182 with a C-206 engine and cowling. Let me know if I am right.

I did 60 jumps on my 60th birthday fund raiser for M.S.in 7 hours and 20 minutes.Last summer I did 16 tandems. This summer Iwill be 67 and we will see what that brings. Last year was the first in many years I didnt break 400 jumps inly 382. My best was 565 at 60. Doesnt seem like much but not bad for Michigan's short season . I am S.O.S.727 and proud of it.

I like your style We had a table at a bar near Skydive Tecumseh in Michigan Two ladies were sitting at the bar the other guy asked me to ask them if they would like to sit with us. Being the shy person I am walked up to them. When I said "if you dont mind sitting with disgusting lewd and vulgar people we have a place for you to sit". The one looked at the other and smiled while saying"I knew we would fit in here".The despite me yelling repetadly to Bozo "Dont argue religion" they left. It was looking good until then.

Terry I am surprised you didnt have any Ted Pullum Custom plastic handles. He was from Schwartz Creek west of Flint and worked a A.C. spark Plug. You told him your canopy colors and he would have a laminated set back to you next week-end. Guarenteed accuracy built in never miss the DZ again. Looking through stuff yesterday I found the original Baby Plane and Para-Plane 3/4 od by 3inch long white nylon toggles. The kind with the hole down one side for loop you popped your brakes loose from the independent brake line attachment that you tied knots in to slow your opening. On Ripcord itself I have a copy of the book and I quote it when a way way to early canopy down sizer crashes being way way too cool. It says "The jumpers with their brightly colored costumes landing with the grace and dignity of a clown falling out of a tree"j rest of the book has other memorable quotes too.

Free Packing Strato stars and Clouds
lekstrom10k replied to McGonigal's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
I used to free pack "Unit"# 26 in a Classiflyer just S folding lines and stacking the canopy. It worked OK. The pack jobs I remember the most was Nick Lucas of EXitus with Jump Shack SST,s having the Martelldo attached to the top of the center cell of a Strato Star as a pilot chute. Worked OK for a while. I had 1 baby Plane and 4 Para-Planes I converted to relines and sliders also de-taped to fit PC sized containers. Just to get a good opening was enough let alone free packing -
I broke an ankle at Salem mi in 1973. I told the doctor kneeling in front of me that he was at just the right height to get his nose broken if he tried to cut off my Frenchie.I replied to his to his assumption it had to be cut off"How well do you like your nose as is?" I took it off no problem, he then said dont ever jump again. I sent him a picture of me landing in the Peas with my caston ,Then 1000 jumps later.It was always mandatory to jump with your cast. I took it off myself with M-1 and M-2 tin snips if anyone is wondering how to do it.

Another old photo....(Pope Valley)
lekstrom10k replied to meakins's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
I would take a blast handle over those pure white injected plastic rip cord handles. Especially in the northern states in the winter.Way to many snapped and left the jumper with a total. Not counting the ones with worse consequences.. I got to jump there in July of 1976. Nice place and attitude. -
I was getting a knob job on a warm evening at a traffic light waiting for it to change. A guy pulls up in the next lane and looks over from his hot -damn wowie Monte Carlo alone on a Saturday night. The windows up Air going and knowing he paid more for his shirt than I did for the whole car I had. I had the girl stop look over at him smile then back down on it . He got mad enough to run the red light not to be associated with someone getting what he wasnt. I would have loved to hear what he would tell a cop

Name another harness/container
lekstrom10k replied to andrewhilton's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
If the main lift web hadnt changed colors does it appear to be possibly one continous piece? By looking at the reversed rip cord housing it may be the original Super-Swooper by the Jump Shack when they were operating out of John Shermans basement in Farmington Mi in the early 70,s.. Ihad one all black with the continous one piece webbing. We were told as it didnt have a TSO tag we were test jumping it for John. Shortly after this model they mounted a Pop-Top on the back to make the first SST. Thats as close as I can come especially with the under slung rip cord housing. -
What is this canopy? #32766
lekstrom10k replied to howardwhite's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
Definitely not a Delta 11 as it doesnt have the OSI on the lower left side. It does have the nose line slider like a Para-Dactyl. I recall a Dactyl having 2 sliders though. I am still guessing. -
"the flip flop jumper"
lekstrom10k replied to blueskiesbill's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I have been wearing Tevas for 30 some years and had to wear shoes for 1 demo jump at MIS Nascar Track near Napoleon Skydiving Center Southern Michigan.I had them back to where the strap went between the big toe and the one that stayed home. I called them at Tevas if they wanted to see what 4000 skydives did to their products . They said yes but I took them out of retirement as my new pair with 1500 suck. If you want to land on frozen lakes watch out traction is bad. By the way according to people from Tennessee call Tevas with socks "Yankee Boots" -
Ever Static Line A Para-Commander?
lekstrom10k replied to T10PCM1's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
As Para-Hawks from 1972 at Salem Mi then on to Marine City until 1979 or 1980 all students trained on them. It really pissed off Harold Lange at Tecumseh because all he had was stolen Army T-10s. Most of his jumpmasters didnt have them.We started attaching to the sleeves with the velcro PC assist. Later we went to D-Bags. We got everyones old 1964,s with the blue nose and red and white. It was easy to see which way they were facing even if they didnt. -
My words to live by was always" I was a jumper befroe I met you and I will still be a jumper long after your gone" If they can live with that your going to be just fine. We have our 34th anniversary in June.She wouldnt bother to ask if I wanted to go to her mothers to watch her trim the rose bushes on a CAVU week-end. She started jumping before her MS put her in a wheel chair.

If I remember right he did a tandem jump . It was years ago during some contreversy, he had with tandems. He admitted he enjoyed it but probably wouldnt do another one.

Just so you know his real name is Jashu Shermanski and he was the best bowler at "Dotch Main" in Hamtramck. Be sure to ask him "How did ya bowl"? .That was when Chrysler didnt care who they hired in 1973. Hope John reads this . "Boy are you ever old" I wont be that old for 3 1/2 years. Happy fucking birthday to you Happy fucking birthday to you Get plastered you bastard Happy fucking birthday to you. {And I really mean it }

In regards to a Cloud or Strato-Cloud packing big . If you had 8 hours to spare and a box of single edge razor blades you could de-tape one Then it would now fit into anything a PC would fit. You would the have a quart sauce pan full of 1 inch tape. As far as the floating pud on an SST the problem was solved by Dave Martell inventing the Marteldo. He came up with it at what now is Skydive Tecumseh in Michigan. This was also the DZ where John Sherman was jumping at the time. Dave might have been working for John at rhe time. Airtwardo caught the Stevens Lanyard on the student rigs. We bought everyones old Style-Maasters with the high mount risers to make reserve ride more tolerable. Also R-2s and then R-3s, of course pilot chuted steerable reserves. We were bad mouthed by the local competition with all the stolen T-10s and 24 flat circulars as to advanced for 1972 students. their own jump masters were jumping rags not even PC,s I saw a lot of Eddy Moshers big and swing wing jump suits in some of the photos so far in this group I had two back then and still have one left for old novelty jumps. Watching people putting on wing suits stirs up memories

As usual on many crappy weather week ends in Michigan, I will go to see some movies with the $12.00 pop corn included. I saw "Taken" and can honestly say it makes James Bond seem like Barnie Fife.I saw "Gran Torino" at a special showing before Christmas. and thought it was great as it was filmed less than10 miles from me. Would you agree that you wouldnt want Liam mad at you ? As always I wont tell anyone anything about it other than I think you would like it

I remember seeing this picture on a "Sky Ride " ad on the internet . I recall the green paint on the wings as not being right either. I called the 800 number to eat up their time and money. The girl answered she really didnt care if it was wrong and how soon I wanted to jump. I told her it was an insult to real skydivers to have pictures incorrectly printed. she said she could get me in a plane that weekend. Also did I want "Terrorist" insurance and bad weather insurance too.
