That's why there is a "Poll" feature on dz.com. When you are not sure about something, you can ask the consensus opinion of a group of people whom you do not know, who do not know you, the relevance of whose advice is highly suspect. I might be defending billvon on a political thread, but there's no way I'm buying beer. Anyway, he's not trolling, he's gloating. Those are different. And when the day comes, and with an election coming up, you can bet your a$$ it will, that we "find" a shiny WMD with the US markings scratched off it over there, you can bet that Rhino will be doing similar gloating, and Bill will be stuck making a contribution to the NRA-ILA. But anyway, I don't think it's fair to accuse him of trolling. Brent ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com

I thought the question was about the effect of winds. Aggie, you're right about that in constant winds, because what you're really talking about is airspeed. I think the original question was about groundspeed, which is why you back up under a lightly loaded canopy. If the forward component of your airspeed is 15 mph, and the wind has a horizontal component of 20 mph, then your groundspeed will be 5 mph backward, and that's why students don't jump in high winds. Relative to the AIR, they are still following that same triangle you draw on the dry erase board. Problem is that triangle is hauling ass backward over the ground. Does this clear things up, or am I making it worse? Brent ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com

This is an odd problem, because a 10D should theoretically capture much MORE shadow detail than even the best film, because you have more latitude, particularly at higher ISO. What happens when you lighten your 10D shots? Are you setting your exposure using the histogram so that the highlights are just getting blown out? With white sky as the background, you might experiment with letting more and more of the higlights get blown out to preserve detail in the darker areas. What to do? When under a canopy you didnt expect to be under?

I'm no piercing expert, but my gf has a scar from a piercing gone awry, so I'd go to a place where someone knows how to do it rather than cutting her loose with an awl and a Dremel tool. ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com

Grab the grass to save your ass 'cause it's the bounce that kills you. Don't know where that's from - I probably read it elsewhere on dz.com. ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com

What to do? When under a canopy you didnt expect to be under?
bmcd308 replied to Rdutch's topic in Safety and Training
Well, Ron, I don't think I am going to take you up on your challenge, because I am afraid I would only be able to give you an impression of whichever one I jumped first. You might well be correct that the PD113 is a whole lot slower and easier to land than the Velocity 103, but I am not confident of a good result under either. My decision tree is a little different from yours - I would be choosing between a fully functional but probably unlandable (for me) canopy on the one hand and a reserve that might malfunction and would probably still be unlandable (for me) on the other hand. Either canopy would be so much smaller and different from anything else I had flown before that I think both would be well outside the envelope of my ability. It's a little like choosing between having a stick of dynamite go off up your ass and quarter pound of C-4 go off up your ass. The C-4 is a much bigger boom, but it doesn't make much difference to the post-explosion condition of your ass. Brent ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com -

>>If it was there and flying OK, I'd keep it. I'd rather have 2000ft to explore the behavior of a strange main than 1000ft to explore the behavior of a strange reserve. -
How Long Did It Take For Your "A"?
bmcd308 replied to Fireflyer's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I've been jumping over two years, and I do not have an A. Of course, I don't jump at a group member dz, so it does not matter. I'll probably send my A-D in the same envelope after this weekend (I guess I better hurry before the 500 jumps thing happens). Brent ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com -

I think most people here give a sh!t. We just have no idea whether you are kidding or what is going on. Why don't you let us in a little, and we'll send you bizarro advice about how to deal with your problem that you would be crazy to take but that will make you feel better to read. And while you're hurt, can I borrow your 10D? Brent ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com
