  1. I disagree - again, dz.com could point back to youtube or the person posting the link as a defense. You missed the point; Yes, DZ.com could defend, probably successfully. At a cost that would bury the website by the time a decision is rendered. SOPA bypasses most of the normal legal processes. SOPA has great intentions, but like the old saying "The road to hell is paved..."
  2. On the whole, probably, but there are quite a few very vocal artists in the digital rights debate (Metalica comes to mind). My label has decided to not support SOPA (but does support the stepsister PIPA). SOPA is too far-reaching for common sense, and provides too much power. As someone who makes their living entirely from copyright, the concept of SOPA is a sound one. The actuality of it is a different story. I suspect we'll see another markup before it goes to a vote, and then we'll see it likely pass Committee. US citizens have done this to themselves. Continuing to download/upload copyrighted works, now setting the stage for 3D fabrication and illegal downloads. This is part of the implied urgency of SOPA and PIPA, IMO. You sound just like sony and other tv/movie producers who screamed in the 70s about how VCRs were nothing but tools of copyright infringement. Well maybe a bit more reasonable in tone, in not content. Please explain your comment. A-Sony didn't do that B-3D fabrication and copyright are valid concerns. Do you know what the US #2 export is?
  3. your friend may have paid for the LICENSE to listen to the soundtrack, but that does not give him the right to copy and distribute. Facebook and YouTube have made license arrangements with a few publishers, so this is why you hear/see videos made with copyrighted works. When you pay for a download or a CD, you do not own the song and may not use it as you see fit. You have a license to enjoy it, but that's it. You may not copy, alter, redistribute for the benefit of anyone other than yourself. It's a violation of the copyright and if the music is put to video, it's a violation of sync rights as well (separate issue). You can play music at a party, provided it's a private party. There have been bars and clubs playing music under the umbrella of "party" without paying ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, and they've been fined. This is the more applicable equivalent. SOPA allows the government to "road block" known traffickers of illegal/copy-righted content. The problem is that the bill is too far reaching for practical purposes.
  4. There are a couple 310's around here being used for WS.
  5. Wonder why no one has sewn flames on toggles before? It'll make the canopy fly faster and flares will become more powerful. ......................................................................... Holy thread drift Batman! I always thought that flames were dreamt up by auto body repair men who were too lazy to repaint the entire car. Dent one corner of the car. Pound the dent flush. Paint on a few flames. Tell the masses that flames are more "sexy" than re-painting the entire car. Hey...quote my ENTIRE post. I stayed on track. Both times. I even offered a packing tip to make the toggles open at deployment. I'm a big fan of wide toggles. With or without flames. CRW toggles would be stylin' with flames. Or rainbows. Whatever.
  6. Quite easy to block those servers, but currently no authority to do so. There are even systems in place (currently, privately) that can block servers based on the amount of flesh tone they stream, identifying child pornography before it hits the USA. There are ways to block systems like TORS from functioning as well. But there currently is no legal authority that allows it.

  8. no more dorky than a misogynistic engineer with a shaved head. Everything else in skydiving and motorcycles has flames, why not toggles? Like I said before, it'll make your canopy fly faster with more powerful flares. And chicks dig scars. All of the above statements are equally accurate.
  9. Wonder why no one has sewn flames on toggles before? It'll make the canopy fly faster and flares will become more powerful.
  10. I have both. One for work and one for personal use. The droid is superior (IMO) in almost every way but the camera. I use the GPS religiously due to travel. I've just ordered the new Razr. One thing that's important; you can't really say "Droid is better" vs iPhone, because the Droid model matters a lot. The Droid2, for example, sucks with the GPS, but the X and the Razr are very good. The HTC models have killer good GPS and camera, but other things are kind of slow. Droid-many hardware choices, iPhone, you have one hardware choice.
  11. If you can get someone to show you how to pack them properly, those particular toggles (and most others) will open up into a perfect square, making it easy to get your hands in. Pack with the toggles pointing up towards the lines, they'll "fall open" on deployment. Eventually they memorize the fold, and will help you remember to pack this way. It's much easier to get hands into, gloved or not.
  12. Not necessarily, since it's just a copy of the file vs a read/scan of the entire file. Perhaps, but not likely, because the file header is apparently intact (otherwise, it wouldn't play at all).
  13. The USPA was offered Chris Gay's canopy control video for next to nothing, to distribute online or otherwise. There was no interest. It's not just the instructors saying that...look inward. Flight One has a great teaching syllabus, course, and turning it into a webinar would be crazy easy. Brian Germain has one too. So do a few others. Rather than re-inventing the wheel, how about supporting and taking advantage of what's already available?
  14. All the software releases for 2012 are announced/shipping. New releases in this market don't hit until June. Avid Adobe Apple Sony are all shipping their newest. Canopus will likely release a new version of Edius in April, shipping in June. Not sure what you searched for, but I suspect Vegas and Premiere are the two most heavily-used apps in the skydiving world. Platinum is your best bet if editing AVC/AVCHD are in your future plans.
  15. email the biggest .vob file to me at dspottedeagle@gmail.com If you have a gmail account, you can also share as a GoogleDoc, and share it at my above email address. If I can fix the file, I will. CRC error usually means a bit was lost here or there. DVD players are somewhat forgiving. Software players usually aren't. NLE=Nonlinear Editor (software editing application).

    Hey you...

Pancakes beckon here, too. Creamer-ball, anyone?
  17. Years ago, Ed Dickenson taught me to fly the burble by getting directly beneath me in the tunnel. He started by using only his arms, then his upper body, and eventually his entire body. The tunnel is tight, so it really helped me learn to fly that edge. If you can explain what you're after to a tunnel coach, it likely won't take long. As others have said...get right to the edge of the burble. You'll probably fall in a time or two; that's part of learning and you'll owe a few beers. Glad to see you're still pursuing camera; Sebastian seems like a million years ago.
  18. if it's a corruption in the VOB, it's sometimes possible to import the VOB to an NLE that doesn't need to look at i/b/p frames and skip over that missing GOP. How long/large is the file?
  19. Neither is that sentence.... Just to throw a wrench in the rhythm of your debate... Googling "official english" got me even more confused. Informative thread though, because until Sacex' post, I thought it was just "F-18." Thanks for the education, guys.
  20. This is not correct. 60i may be on the fringe, but it does show ALL events occurring within that time frame and doubling/slowing frames does not reduce the information contained in those frames.

  22. I can think of at least 3 dropzones that have painted concrete blocks or similar to mark a split in the field, LH on one side, RH on the other. I don't care for it, but that's how a few do it.
  23. Of course there shouldn't be a rating for every kind of discipline. If someone is going to TEACH in a discipline, they should have their Coach rating at a minimum, so that they understand the fundamentals of USPA education process. However...camera flying puts another person(s) at risk. Additionally, camera flying is often part of the instructional process, whether it's flying for coached jumps, AFF jumps, or tandem jumps. More often than not, a camera jump is a "hire" jump, and a certain level of professionalism is expected. Part of that professionalism (IMO) is knowing how/what the coach/instructor is thinking and expecting. Certainly these things can be learned without a Coach rating, but having undertaken the coach program helps a lot.
  24. I understand your argument. From the perspective of the USPA, it would be foolish to create a rating that isn't involved with the instructional rating organization. Write it up and propose it. Maybe the BOD will go for it. Failing in front of the BOD is a really fast way to understand how that process works. And...you might be successful. Worse things could happen.
  25. IMO, if they don't want to coach, we shouldn't 'force' them into the rating. There's a huge difference between a coach that actually WANTS to be a coach, vs someone who is a coach just so they can fly video. There are probably some damn good coaches out there that would suck as videographers, and there are probably some damn good vidiots that would suck at coaching. If they don't want to do both, we shouldn't put it as a requirement for you to be a coach to get a camera 'ticket'. I love getting to do both, because they're both fun for me, but I can understand how one would want to video more than you would want to coach and vice versa.. If this were a debate before the USPA, it would be argued that any camera rating (any rating) has to start with the coach rating. The coach rating program provides information and challenges relating to how what when to observe, safety procedures, etc. For a vidiot to understand what the student is thinking is very valuable (paramount, in my view), and allows the vidiot to be part of the coaching process, even if he/she is merely providing a coach debrief after the jump (debriefing the coach themselves). Holding the rating does not require one to teach, but it does require one to understand the skills required of the coach, the goals required of the student, a cohesive understanding of safety tasks, communication, etc. In other words, there is no downside, but there are many, many upsides. Most certainly, inside video is helpful for a coach and student -if the coach has a lot of experience. Providing a stable base and debrief for the student is not as complex as providing a stable base, debrief, turning on the camera in the airplane (if it's a GoPro, asking the student to verify it's on) worrying about "am I getting this shot?" and being caught up in the student's deployment (and often wanting to be close enough to get the deployment, which is anathemic to what a newbie coach should be doing anyway). In short, you can bet your tush that any USPA Camera rating discussion would absolutely include the USPA Coach rating.
