A few people/failed to strip the last inch?" Have you actually pulled a cutaway cable on a wing? Even if you "fail to pull the last 2-3", it's not going to be a problem. A first experience with one demonstrates as much. More FUD. The "safety sleeve" improvement finally reached a valid stage when the spandex cuff was introduced at PIA last year. Zippers have improved, but that's not a wingsuit thing. Same can be said for the zippers on boatcovers, motorcycle covers, and other high-stress zippers. Zipper manufacturers have improved their product. Fabrics have also improved. Pressurization methods have improved. Aerodynamic design has improved. And our attention to detail and understanding of the process of wingsuiting has improved. It's genetic. It's how most any evolution occurs; we're not special.

200$/month rental looks a pretty good deal indeed, it is a pretty good deal. And therein lies the great ignorance.

Lenses on a Sony-type camera are significantly better. they're not as wide, so you don't have to fly as close and the student won't have a huge nose. Size of sensor is larger, better in dimly lit aircraft. Colors are more rich/deep, and may easily be further processed. recording format is AVCHD, which decodes approx 75% faster on a PC than AVC does (GoPro, Contour, RePlay all use Avc). GoPro's are fine for handcams, but for outside video? Not something I'd want to hand to the customer.

U.S. Parachute Team ~ Any Funding Idea$ ?
DSE replied to airtwardo's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
You've asked me this on the phone and in person, and my response is the same today. I do have several ideas. It's a sales job, however. I'm convinced that no one at USPA possesses the skills necessary to perform that aspect of the job. I believe a couple of BOD members do. -
Seeing your handles is pretty important. Do you think you can see your handles with this sort of full face?

the way to know "for sure" is to download the demos of the newer versions and run them. They're good for 30 days.... As mentioned above, you may have memory issues.hopefully you tried setting your DMR to 0. Sorry I can't help you more. Not being at the machine makes it tough.

U.S. Parachute Team ~ Any Funding Idea$ ?
DSE replied to airtwardo's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
An option is to have the US Team members produce a subscription video or training video that is VOD (Video on Demand) that enables skydivers to watch discipline specific training in small chunks. Wanna learn docking secrets, accuracy techniques, gear tips, etc, from Jim Hayhurst, Chris Gay, Cheryl Stearns, Jonathan Tagle, Craig Girard, etc 1.99 and click here. Thing iTunes for skydive video training. No manufacturing cost, US Team members donate a little time and share knowledge, USPA already has a website with commerce. Sell "Sponsored by" or "brought to you by...." slots at the head and tail of each 3-7 minute episode, graphics package and V/O announcing the sponsor(s). FWIW, the PIA videos we do each year have cumulatively gone well over 1.8M views. .01% of those views would likely pay a buck or two per view of training material from world champions/would-be world champions, it's not small change. -
coupla things ~although PMB says "Sony" and Vegas says "Sony" they're about as related as you and I are. PMB is code from Sony Electronics/Japan and Vegas is Sony Creative Software in Madison, WI. They're actually competitors :-) That's why Vegas likes GoPro and PMB doesn't. There are also licensing issues that Vegas doens't have, but PMB does. Anyway...media manager will auto-update if you have NetNotify enabled in your preferences.

ALL NLE systems that use native files allocate for the entire file vs merely pieces that are used. That's what allows them to be nimble on the timeline, because it is buffering parts of files that really aren't there, so that you're not complaining about latency. It's not loading to the RAM, it's loading it to the buffers it's created on the drive. You don't have 60GB of RAM, do you? You're also running AVC in an application that barely manages AVC. Vegas 9 is pretty ancient in terms of its relevance to AVC decoding, so it's going to be slow on that front too. Rendering frame by frame and how much information the system has allocated aren't relevant.

Why put a perfectly good Cessna at risk? Balloons are cheaper... just sayin'.

If you import the tandem video to a folder with the date, name of student, or whatever your convention is before starting the edit, everything stays in that folder. Vegas will revert to that folder when you render. This is what Production Assistant does, same kind of thing (in part) is it manages where media comes from when ingested from a card, and where it goes (when rendered). One thing that really helps flow (IMO) is to build a month's worth of empty folders at the first of the month. All projects from "that day" go into that day's folders. Or, you can install Vegas Media Manager (free on the Sony site) and it'll keep track for you, by date, time, color, keyword, and a bunch of other tags

K, There are two signals in your post. A-I'll bet you have a LOT of unused media? B-sounds like your system itself doesn't have the horsepower. Be sure your project properties are set to the same as the majority of your source. ie; lots of GoPro 1080 50i footage? Be sure project properties are set to match. Next, another option that will likely work for your render is to: ~FILE | SAVE AS ~In this dialog, choose "Copy Media with Project" ~Next window, choose "Use Trimmed Media" and give it a 1 second head/tail Save to a different location where you know you've got enough space to duplicate the entire project. This will trim off all the unused stuff. For example, you have a GoPro that was switched on 2 mins before exit, and stays on til landing, but you're only using the exit, and may be a small bit of freefall. That's a 90% file waste and uses a lot of system memory because Vegas has to allocate for the entire file, not just the parts you're using. Multiply that by say...50 or more raw clips....it's a HUGE task. SAVE AS with the project media can trim all the fat off, and then open the new project with the newly trimmed media. This often works when memory errors are the root cause.

really? There's just a little more to it than that at many DZ's. Most pilots aren't wingsuiters, and that's why they kinda like being educated a little. At least the many that I've come across do. Not every other kind of skydiver can get in the way of the aircraft pretty easily, not every other kind of skydiver is still in the plane for 30-60 seconds after the last tandem, and not every kind of skydiver can easily hit the tail. Many pilots are afraid of wingsuiters, so sharing a beer, conversation, and a good relationship with the pilot is usually a mutually beneficial thing. Depending on the DZ and pilot, I disagree with "obey the green light." Of course have your group ready to go as you know you're getting near jump run, get the door open on the yellow (if you have one) and be climbing out AFTER you've verified the spot. On more than one occasion I've known pilots to flip the green at the wrong time. Saw someone badly hurt because they "obeyed the green" and exited nearly 2 miles from the DZ. Otherwise, I agree with the rest of your points.

what you're asking for is a consumer behavior. Vegas Pro doesn't work like that, unless you use a management function like Sony Production Assistant. You can also use the IMport function in the Project Media manager window; it will keep track of all media for you. I guess I'm missing what you're wanting to do. you have to import media at some point; most pro's do it before they start editing.

love those colors. Congrats!

I think that's more a skydiving norm then Base from what I have witnessed out jumping. Also, there is a giant difference between a still air exit and malfunctions at speed. Symmetry is much more important on a base exit if you desire to go straight. I have seen people turn 90-150 degrees on exit because 1 second in they started kicking their feet, and weren't symettrical. Quite interesting to watch. Probably why normal base experience is reccomended in base jumping, so you are a little more Comfortable on exit and able to handle the blown one or any other crazy shit that can happen.... _justin Perhaps you're right. In our little macrocosm we see a lot of people come through here wearing big suits, low WS experience, that are heading for LB or similar.

Deal, I am game. Want to place a bet on it because I would bet $100.00 that I don't go into an uncrontolled roll. I am 100% serious. You can even have someone sew up the vent on one side. Try it from a balloon. I'm as confident as you are that I can control it. If I expect it. I'm not sure how I'd respond were my wing to suddenly collapse, i'm flying towards a rock, and I have little time to make a decision. That said, cover up front/back vents on one side of an Xbird, exit a balloon, and see what happens. I'd bet that once you transit from head low to forward flight/dive to flight, it wouldn't be stable. Even if you expect it to not be.

Buying them a Domino's gift certificate every now and again doesn't hurt either. Wingies often want special favors.
-
Fair enough. Wanted to remove the experience level as part of the causal conversation. So many guys putting on big suits at low wingsuit experience, it's a valid question. Thanks for answering. More suggestive of wing-relevance than operator relevant.

when you merge them all, you'll lose quality. I'm curious about what you're rendering to (drive type). I wish I had Vegas Movie Studio 9 to help. Try setting Dynamic RAM to 0 in Preferences/Video

High in wingsuits? High in the Xbird? High in # of BASE jumps?

For those using Twixtor, re VisionEffects released an update to the app a couple of weeks ago. it's smoother, and fixes many of the bugs.

FILE | IMPORT in Vegas Pro.

I've flown entire slots on a few occasions (I think Callantine might have video of one of them) where the wing was entirely blown at the arm zip to shoulder, both in largeTS and smaller PF suits. I also took video of Steve Harrington at Pepperell, flying with his leg mostly unzipped and flapping, completely in-slot. It's quite flyable, which is why I wonder the experience level.

The "Pro" in Vegas Pro assumes that users want to manage their own media, locations, bins, etc. If you want Vegas Pro to manage files similarly to how Movie Studio does it, use the Import dialog immediately after opening a new project.
