  1. Yep. I have a magic trick. You know where to find me.

    ACL surgery

Uhh...you might want to review the dates again. ACL replacements surgery in September, (not June). Most any ortho will recommend allograft over hamstring for persons over the age of 30. I do not advocate anyone follow my example; my circumstances were a bit different and my needs (plus ability to do very intensive rehab) were likely different than most. Nevertheless, 5 weeks post-op, I was back in the air, and was back in the air full time less than 2 weeks later. But hey...I'm stupid.
  3. I couldn't agree more. in my several decades of existence, I'm trying to recall any instance where an atheist, agnostic, or even a Buddhist or Jew has knocked on my door to tell me how I'm going to hell for not believing what they believe. On the other hand, I can remember (as recently as last week), Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses, and baptists all knocking on my door. The Mormons and JWs are particularly offensive in their zeal and attack on my beliefs. I can't think of any other religion past Mormonism that has purchased significant amounts of airtime on television and 'net broadcasts to tell me why they're happier than I am and that I should investigate their product. It all kinda boils down to what you said above; "You're an asshole going to hell because you believe something I don't believe and you can't justify to my satisfaction why you believe what you do." Can't get much more mindless than that. It's surreal.
  4. Not as on-level as PChapman's, but as the distance grows, the relative height of the trackers to the base is apparent.
  5. This would also require females willing to have sex with wingsuiters at a rate higher than regular skydivers. I'm not saying it doesn't happen occasionally, but . . . ya know . . . it's important to remember desirability of the adaptation also has to be part of the fucking equation. Yeah...but everyone who is anyone knows that wingsuiters get all the ladies these days....just ask Andy Malchiodi or Christiaan Rendle. That's the *real* reason swoop ponds are drying up. Ron, if you don't know where the 5k year figure came from...you're not paying attention to what a lot of Xtians believe. http://www.creationtips.com/earthsage.html is just one of several hundred references. That aside, I did visit the Xtian Creation Museum and it was almost as enjoyable as Lewis Black on a particularly intense rant. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wzjjxi7f0Oc http://youtu.be/zdFVAUCM6X4 (the more fun of the two links, although the audio is annoying)
  6. This may be accurate for older systems that aren't optimized, but certainly not an issue for most systems. We stream/full rez playback/framerate from CX series/AVCHD 16-24Mbps camcorders all day, everyday. Even on older laptops. If it'll play from the MSPD or SD card in a port, it'll play from the USB port too. It's the same data. It's a file xfer/stream. If the system USB resource is not sharing, it'll playback over WMV, VLC, or most other lightweight players straight from the camera over USB. USB2.0=480Mbps (max) Firewire 400/1394a=400Mbps (max)

    ACL surgery

Call me "stupid." June 8, broken L1-5, Pelvis(7 fracture points with bolt, plate, 8 screws), sacrum, coccyx, ACL/MCL on right, ACL on left. Bladder torn in three places, severe colon damage, in ICU for 2 weeks, one week in traction prior to later surgeries. September 17th, ACL replacement (allograft, not my own). Oct 27, first exit from 5K. Been jumping most every day since (although I wear a DonJoy DefianceIII for all jumps, the MCL isn't a forgiving ligament) No problems in more than 2K jumps following the above.
  8. The slow speed of evolution not withstanding (and ignoring the goat-f**k stupid people that run the Creation Museum claiming that man rode/hunted dinosaurs and that the earth is only 5000 years old), yes...changes are apparent. Elk are smaller than they once were (hunting records bear this out) and humans are getting much taller/larger (photographs, family histories, and anthropological studies bear this out). You can claim this is is due to better foods, and it may well be. However...evolution is about evolving to adapt to food/environment, too. And then there are the earthworms....
  9. Apple doesn't support MPEG formats. So... Plug in camera via USB; this is a file transfer, not a capture. iMovie is fickle in what it will/won't read. Apple does now offer AVCHD support, but it usually fails if there are also MPEG files on the camcorder, and sometimes it'll fail if there is even an MPEG folder left on the card. Here is Apple's knowledgebase article: Symptoms Some camcorders that record multiple formats require extra steps to import both formats into iMovie ’09. If you have recorded both AVCHD and MP4 (or iFrame) formats with certain camcorders, iMovie will only recognize the MP4/iFrame video clips in its 'Import' window. Resolution To view and import AVCHD clips from your multi-format camcorder in iMovie, MP4/iFrame footage should be imported, preferably backed up, and then deleted from your camcorder. After all MP4/iFrame clips have been deleted from your camcorder, disconnect the camcorder from your computer and then reconnect it back again. The AVCHD clips should appear in the iMovie Import window. That said, there are many, many free converters available.
  10. Evolution stopped? Did I miss a memo? I did have a very interesting conversation with a woman on a plane today. I don't know her religious background, but I'd make the guess she was a Christian conservative. She is entirely convinced that the "earth weighs more today than it did 1000 years ago, because people are much, much bigger than they used to be.
  11. I did shoot some vid of people putting it on, I just haven't uploaded it yet. Funny thing; there was one guy that put it on and raved about how sweet it felt, raved about the new features. Then he says "if they'd only thought to put magnetic riser covers on there, it would be the ultimate, most perfect rig ever." Then I showed him the magnetic riser covers.
  12. C'mon ...it's not *that* much heavier. Traveling with a Ghost3 and two P2 suits isn't at all a heavy bag. You wanna feel "heavy," pick up an Alien suit.
  13. The one I *had* is the one in the photos. It's now back at RI where Angela wears it around the office. Mine are a ways off in delivery, as only the smaller sizes are ready for production.
  14. I have several of both, and some suits that are a hybrid. I disagree that Parapack loses its color more quickly. It definitely is more warm in the summer, and significantly more resistant to tearing. I wish all my student suits were parapack. Balloon feels more "naked" and it's a great feeling on a hot day to have no shirt on beneath. This is where I can easily discern the diff between the two fabrics. If you are regularly flying a small plane with lots of knee/butt time scrunched up against others, I'd look closely at Parapack. If you're on a big Otter DZ and you prefer the "lightness" of balloon, that's another option. Me...I'm on an Otter DZ but still prefer Parapack. Bear in mind that not all colors are available in Parapack.
  15. you could always call Manifest and leave a message for both Nick and Lelo. (951) 245 9939
  16. Doesn't mean that would be all/part/none of the judging criteria. You could also put a 24" stick (with chalk on the end) in the hand of every competitor and whoever had the longest/most/consistent marks on the wall wins. Seems to be a lot of potential competitive angles available. The wingsuit video games have gates (much like you suggest); balloons (with no cameramen present) to mark the gates?
  17. The Curv does have magnets in the riser covers.
  18. "Faster" doesn't equate to farther nor longer. All three are possible means of determining results.
  19. Contact Nick Roti http://nickroti.com/ or Lelo Mras http://www.lelomras.com/LeloMras/Welcome.html. Both are riggers that offer escrow services.
  20. Unlike motorcycles, state laws do not require no-fault insurance for skydiving (most states require proof of insurance to register a motorcycle). Insurance costs act as a form of regulation (higher costs for bigger motors), but like skydiving...anyone with the $$ can get their hands on anything, regardless if it's appropriate for their skill level, experience, wisdom (or not).
  21. Is there any documented case of someone canceling a tandem because of this video? Two separate groups showed up today specifically _because_ of the video; they wanted to see what it really looked like. Both ended up booking, one jumped. The other would have jumped had it not been for weather. It's demonstrable; skydiving interest increases after any incident reported in the news. It may not be the kind of 'marketing' that is good for the sport, but it does spark awareness that often turns to more business.
  22. Significantly faster... There is no DVD menu creation, there is no muxing, there is no DVD burn, and this is where the bottleneck is in most operations. Rendering straight to .mp4 and then copying to a thumbdrive is quite fast. you might want to talk to Lob at Skydive Elsinore to get his take on it. As far as "best quality"...that's where the lag might come in. If you're looking to deliver 16mbps files on a thumb, you'd best have a very fast computer. We're delivering at a lower average/max than the BD standard simply because of speed.
  23. This is how we do it at Skydive Elsinore. We've "removed" the DVD delivery unless someone request it. Since going to thumbs, we haven't had any returns nor complaints. it's significantly faster, and drives contain both pix and vid. We deliver a 1280 x 720 video on the thumb. We do not turn over raw video, but it is stored on a DZ server. Skydive Hawaii also offers this option, as do a few other DZs. 2 GB drives are more than enough, IMO
