  1. Like I said, you indicated you have mad skills in another thread, just as in this one you discuss a 25' surf and how great it was. Yup, they're great...but there is a lot of learning between just getting an A license and swooping. You'll get away with downsizing your wingloading slightly better than some folks, due to your altitude, but if you want to be conservative (as you've also indicated) it's good practice to follow the curves of the various manufacturer wingloading charts. The wingloading charts referred to are generated by people who have forgotten more about skydiving than 99.9% of skydivers will ever know. There definitely are exceptional skydivers, and maybe you're one of them. I thought I was exceptional, until I broke my heel landing a canopy too small for my ability at the time. But heck...I'd jumped that canopy at least 20 times without hurting myself. I know I can fly a 107 and land it 99 out of 100 times without being hurt. It's that one that I can't land that hurts.
  2. I forgot, you have mad skills. Good luck to you. 30-odd jumps and you're at a 1.2 wingloading. You have Germain's book, see what it says. It'll show you that at your weight and experience, you shouldn't be on a 170 of any kind. But the guys at your DZ know better than anyone. The Spectre can range anywhere from Novice (which you are) to Expert, depending on the wingloading. it's not a crazy swoop machine if that's what you're asking. For your published exit weight, PD recommends you be on a 230. According to
  3. A 280 to a 210 to a 170 in 25 jumps? There is nothing "conservative" in doing this, not at your weight. Consider yourself lucky. The guy that loaned you the 170 isn't your friend. There is already a thread on the Spectre, it's a very gentle canopy on opening, and easy to fly; Personally I found it sluggish but there are some serious pros that fly the Spectre, Tony Hathaway being one of them. If you're reading Brian Germain's book, read the section on downsizing.
  4. Nice to know. I'd have thought it would be wider than that. Looks like the inset works to keep it as narrow as possible.
  5. I resent the implication here. You slapped every DZ in the country that offers training at costs less than that quoted on the webpage. If that's what you you read into my words, I apologize. Where you correct, I'm slapping my own DZ as well, which I don't believe I did. I have no clue what AFF should cost in CT, but it is expensive compared to what the DZs within say...500 miles of here charge. Would you agree it's a poor idea to choose a DZ based solely on price?
  6. A-Paragear is out of the switch, so is Conceptus. B-I'd like to be able to continue to use my current tongue switch, for either of the cameras I've got. With a 2.5mm female connector on the N3, it's a fast switch-out for the 40D or the 400D. It would be better if Canon had a single standard though.
  7. yeah, i'd found that one too, but the idea of pouring hot glue and WD 40 into the remote connector of my 40D doesn't excite me. I did appreciate his wiring diagram at the bottom though, it saved me a few minutes in the process of soldering cables. It seems silly that the connector itself can't be purchased without going through Canon's service center, or a Canon-authorized service center.

I'm sure all of his porn is of the low resolution free quality Some vid just wasn't meant for high def anyway.
  9. Here's another for ya Strat.. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/classifieds/detail_page.cgi?ID=53878;d=1 No size, model #, color, etc. Different ad, different person, same thing. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/classifieds/detail_page.cgi?ID=53856;d=1 Maybe it has something to do with the brand name?

Sony Vegas Movie Studio, or Sony PSP Manager...works great. Be sure you've got the latest firmware in your PSP; you can play full rez HD.

    Zappa plays Zappa

Oh god, please tell me you're kidding. If you're not, I'm officially "old." FWIW, my first music instructors was William Fowler, father of the horns in Mothers of Invention. After they were no longer playing with Frank, I was privileged enough to play with Tom, Walt, and Bruce. Later, I was privileged enough to master Ike Willis' "Shoulda Gone Before I Left" CD (Ike was Frank's lead vocalist for a while, and he can sound exactly like FZ when he wants to). Ike is still playing in Oregon, Fowler Brothers still play occasionally in Utah, Frank Lives! If they say you're "the cutest boy in town" you'd better run.
  12. I dont' have the trigger for the old one, but will have the useless trigger from the new cable. I suppose I can put a male 2.5mm on the trigger to fit the female 2.5mm on the connector end, and then use a long 2.5mm male/female cable if I need ground remote at length. But if I need ground remote at length, i'll likely just buy the wireless remote anyway. 75.00 for a remote connector is insane. Add the 40.00 Conceptus, and you've got one very expensive remote.
  13. That package does include tunnel time and rentals; here in the west that would be a tad expensive but not grossley out of line. I don't know what the local areas are charging for AFF in the eastern side of the state. While you don't want to overpay, also don't consider cost as the major factor; the people you're working with are training you to stay alive...do you *really* want "cheap?" Folks aren't necessarily going to follow your link. You might be specifically asking about your area in Connecticut, or places within 100 miles of where you are. Use this link as a starting point.
  14. Depending on the progression your DZ uses, your next 6 jumps (at least) will be with someone holding on to you. The first AFF is nearly always a two-instructor jump, one on your right side (main side) and the other on the reserve side (left side). "Solo" means you're not attached to anyone. Instructors jump with/holding onto you, yet you must be prepared to do the skydive entirely on your own. Once you progress from tandem to AFF student, it's all you, baby.
  15. On the twelve of Never. Did you see the penis in Lil' Mermaid? Or "Sex" in Lion King? Or hear the Judas Priest suicide message? Or all the hidden Beatles messages? So long as there are people, there will be imagined conspiracies of one kind or another. The letters "NYC" (New York City), when viewed in "Webdings" font, forms characters reading "I Love New York". When viewed in "Wingdings" font, it reads "Killing Jews is Good". Conspiracy?
  16. After jumping an Infinity for a month (granted, it wasn't made for special me), I ended up buying a Rigging Innovations. I'm now the proud owner of three of their containers, two I jump daily and one I'm waiting for (I guess I don't really own it yet, huh?) Talon FX and Voodoo's rock. You can find used, which is definitely the best way to buy until you've got a few hundred jumps, IMO.
  17. I wouldn't have selected this person for the subject; it wasn't my call, but had it been, I'd have selected someone else. Additionally, the TM wore a wrist cam, and I suspect that (since he doesn't normally wear one) the additional component of the skydive had an impact on how the exit was performed. Bottom line....I learned my lesson.
  18. B&H is closed for the high holidays, Ritz can't get one to me before Sat. I sucked it up and paid the overnight and full retail from Pictureline. Sucks that I'm just gonna take it and cut off the cable, but had hoped to find just the N3 connector. The upside is that I can build a quick-connect so that I can continue to use my 400d as well, I guess. Hmmm....there's a thought, one cam with a 15mm and one with a 55.
  19. Went there first. The four on Ebay are all in Hong Kong. Hence my post.
  20. IMO, TI always has the right of way...regardless of what he says. Yesterday we shot an opening scene for a television show, with the television show hosts. I went over the exit sequence three times with the TI's, once with just them, once with the producer, once with the pilot, students, DP, and DZO all present. I wanted them to delay coming to the door so we had an unhurried shot of the talent and TI coming to door, then the TI was supposed to wait for a signal and then give his normal count. First TI went without a hitch. Second guy did everything great up until coming to the door. No count, nada. Just went. not even an out/in/out of any kind. But it was still my fault for not getting the desired exit angle. I'm the camera guy. I'm there to shoot what happened, and if I'm not reading it right...it's my bad. I suspect he was overwhelmed with everything that was going on, and at the end of the day, his focus needs to be on the student.
  21. Local photo store is out...I need to find a female N3, but not sure where else to look. Found a site for making your own...but not wanting to spend the night playing with hot glue. Suggestions?
  22. Your question is too individualistic, IMO. You might as well ask "If you saw a 100.00 bill on the street, would you keep it or attempt to find the owner?"? The website(s) I manage? If it's not true or reasonable, it doesn't go up. ie; no pix of head down, CRW, sit, skysurfing, raft dives, with "You can do this as soon as you're off student status!" written underneath. No bigway pix suggesting we have bigways.
  23. If the owner of the HC3 was shooting the HC3 in SD mode, it's entirely likely that the HC3 doesn't look quite as good as the PC footage depending on how the two cams are set up; but if the HC3 is shot HD HD mode and downconverted to SD, you're right; there simply can be no comparison. No way, no how.
  24. Exit...from rear float, track upwards like hell from the moment you release. You'll probably eventually use a head-down style exit where your shoulder rolls under as you're looking up at the student, and then roll into your sit, but I'd work on keeping close to the tandem for now. Don't get all caught up in shooting only the student's face close up. Give 'em some shots that show the surrounding environment/ground. The .3 will require you to be fairly close for a filled frame, I'd also recommend you stick with a .45 or .5... Large wings? As small as you are, you don't likely need them. Maybe if you're wearing weights? I'd agree with "start with belly and work towards sit/backfly." I started belly, then went to sit with bigger wing, now working on backfly when not doing paid jumps. Then again...what the hell do I know? I'm still learning the flying parts.
