I might be wrong, but I believe we're the first DZ to offer BD (Blu-ray) discs of a skydive, and while it's not the most popular thing, did my second one today. Some folks are willing to pay thru the nose to get one. Cam-eye sort of thing is a two part process with this camera, I believe. Start/stop is via the A/V switch (I hope to have something really simple as soon as weather grounds us for a couple days) and there are several options for recording indicator. AFAIK, this is the lightest camcorder money can buy. And they're cheap by comparison. The 40D is definitely heavy, especially with a 15mm lens on it.

FTP, That sort of question is one you'd like to ask your instructors, who can show you in person, how this is done. Additionally, this sort of question would probably be better served in the General Discussions forum. Blues~!

Small commentary, this is a fast way to kill a battery, if you're suggesting that it be plugged in after every jump. LI-ON or NiCad, batteries like to be drained, or near drained before seeing a charge, otherwise they'll gain a memory. LI-ON batteries are advertised as not having memories, but anyone who works with them much will tell you that they indeed, do.

Well...there is one benefit to the CX7 if you want to work between HD and SD, and that is that you can have an extremely lightweight cam on your head, and transfer the footage via analog. It's still real-time transfer, however, but the footage is incredibly good. Better than any SD camcorder you can wear. And...no tape costs.

Do you agree with the way this demo was handled?

Without meaning/wanting to hijack the thread, I suspect you misinterpret "bandwidth theft." Hotlinking, leeching, piggy-backing, direct linking or bandwidth theft is not the same as posting a link. There are no secondary servers involved. If you don't want someone looking at your content on your own webpage, don't put it up to be seen. -
Epoxy was just the "5 minute/two part" stuff you buy at Home Depot. No, I don't have any CF fabric. Haven't found a place that will sell me a very small amount so I can experiment with these joints. I did read that tip on an RC forum, but haven't the materials. I'd like to try it, I'm experimenting with some marginally unique mounting methods.

Should minimum recommendations apply to you?
DSE replied to skybytch's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Five" is "several" in my vocab (There are five WS-related deaths in the fatality database), not including the Race Price nor Patrick d'Gayardon incidents. In my mind though, I probably have lumped Jimmy Hall and Stevo Anderton in there as well. -
I believe Chris was conscious during the skydive and subsequent canopy flight. If you watch the video again/closely, you can see him checking out his reserve and then back to looking at the ground. It's not really relevant whether he was unconscious or not, he wasn't controlling the canopy, which I think is your point.

Does it make me an asshole that that drives me mad? Nah, it just means you have ethics.

Congrats, welcome to the sport, and rock on with your level 2!

While I agree with minimums, and have followed them throughout my time in skydiving, I don't feel it's accurate that adhering to minimums keep people alive, or not adhering to minimums cause people to die. Several WS pilots have died in non-health issue skydives, all of whom had more than 1000 jumps. Things happen, skydives are always a risk; minimums merely help minimize a portion of the risk via greater experience, IMO. -
Last night I epoxied two carbon fiber plates at a right angle. Still waiting for the epoxy to completely cure, but it looks identical to how Wes makes his 90 degree joints. Anyone had experience with one of these coming apart? It looks weak. I'll have a better grip after this cures, but right now...I don't know that I'd trust my cameras on this.

white noise or hum? Or just plain ole' static? If it's just plain ole' static, it's possible you've got a dirty input that is intermittent. Cramolin and a plug might fix it. Worse, it could be a connection that has come loose. Still worse, it could be a torn mic diaphragm.

*generally* not, unless you're grabbing for 5x7 or smaller. If you're using a wide angle lens of any kind, you've immediately reduced the effective resolution of the image by at least 50% or more, so at that point, the frame grabs are good for 3x5 and that's about it. Great for web though.

Travis Pastrana skydives with no 'chute
DSE replied to joe399's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
What a sneaky lil' shit. He stopped by and did a few jumps a couple weeks ago, followed out tandems of his friends, but said nothing about the "no rig" jump. Incredible on a motorcycle, almost magical. If you can find the ESPN book (just published) on him, it's a great read, particularly the chapter on skydiving. -
The FAA grounded a skydive O2 system today
DSE replied to Zing's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
USPA was already contacted today, FWIW. -
Haven't seen any roll cages that are commercially available, just boxes. However, RedKite has a very sweet system on his helmet that you might want to check out.

Since it's only a link to the video, vs copying the video and hosting it elsewhere, it doesn't remotely approach a copyright discussion. Kinda like saying "Check out this really cool book" and posting it over the water cooler. It's not the same as copying the book and passing it around. -
Please explain how any DZ in Utah is a "surrounding area" to any aspect of Atlanta? I have sent two letters to Skyride, both of which have gone unanswered. Bill Gephardt of KUTV sent letters which went unanswered. KUTV sent a newscrew to SDA and were asked to leave the building. Doesn't sound like Skyride "makes changes accordingly."

Next year, probably. I've budgeted a couple grand for a fast 'puter next season, and being able to quickly transfer the vid will be a huge bonus for me. Having spent an entire day with the CX7 (8 tandems) and my semi-older laptop, I'm loathe to recommend it to anyone. The single-thread, 1.83GHz proc couldn't render video as fast as it manages DV (as expected) and so what time I saved in transfer, I mostly lost in render to MPEG. AFAIK, we're the first DZ to offer Blu-ray in the world, and while we've only had one request for BD, next year I expect we'll have a few, so the new system also will have BD on it. We charged a high premium for it, and was surprised to have even one taker this year. We'll see what next year brings. Anyway, unless you've got a FAST 'puter, AVCHD isn't the answer for you.

Impressive! Most I've done in a day packing for myself is 12, but did 31 with others packing for me ( did a couple packjobs just cuz).

Who Wants to Loan Me $1.5 Mil so I Can Have My Own Missle Base?
DSE replied to NWFlyer's topic in The Bonfire
I'd rather have this one as it's already got a runway, hangar, and ready to go as a DZ if the area would support it. If not, just a great fly-in home with a huge underground storage area. -
Hate crime for assault on opposing team fans??
DSE replied to simplyputsi's topic in Speakers Corner
Interesting. The DOJ has one set of numbers, significantly higher than those that are federally investigated. How you discount those numbers, I have no idea. The UCR numbers from 2000 to 2006 have increased, not decreased, every year. At this point, t'would appear you're trolling, the numbers are there for anyone to view. AFAIK, the FBI and the DOJ are both reputable and conservative organizations, so I'll accept their numbers. Having been on the receiving end of hate crime, I resent the constant implication that it isn't an issue, and/or that it doesn't matter. What I find most amazing is that a large percentage of the bias crimes are committed by white "Christians" and the majority of those opposed ot the concept of bias crime are white "Christians." It they're not the group committing the crimes, why be opposed to punitive laws regarding the crime?
