  1. He's correct, PPro can't handle MPEG 4, either of the AVCHD variety or XDCAM variety.
  2. Congrats to you. The XTi is a great camera, and takes beautiful photos.
  3. Do you suppose there may come a time when the USPA and other organizations recognize wingsuiting as a specialized discipline that requires some form of certificated instructional program? Obviously wouldn't relate to current BMI/PFI's, but if the manufacturers can show consistently successful self-regulation over a period of time, do you feel it might make it easier for wingsuiting to be accepted as a discipline in parent organizations? Tandem manufacturers maintained their own rating system for a while, didn't they?
  4. Didn't DST spawn from the railroads? If I remember history correctly, railroads are also why we have timezones?
  5. Just seeking a little of a micro-statistic, if you don't mind playing along? Curious as to the motivations of any answers you might offer as well.
  6. Never heard that one before, thanks for sharing it
  7. "Heavier-than-air flying machines are impossible." - Lord Kelvin " Thankfully, the Wright brothers didn't pay heed, and decided to keep trying (whether it made a mark in the world or not). “Well informed people know it is impossible to transmit the voice over wires and that were it possible to do so, the thing would be of no practical value.” [The Boston Post in 1865] Glad Marconi and Philo Farnsworth felt the need to "make their mark." IMO, many people (who may be accused of motivation to 'make a mark') may actually just have a desire to do something different, and whether their name is known or not, doesn't matter. Sometimes their competence or talent forces them into the spotlight. We all know very talented, but relatively unknown personalities.
  8. I find myself wondering why it matters to anyone. If you're a new skydiver, being consumed with enthusiasm for the sport seems to be common. Maybe someone wants to come up with goofy T-shirt sayings so they start a Tshirt company. Maybe they're undergoing the process of learning, so they want to share what they're learning through the process and write a book. Perhaps they have uncovered a "new way" of catching air, and want to expose others to the differences. Maybe (my particular case) the enthusiasm runs towards the political side. I had intended on running for a BOD position (therefore 'making a mark') until I attended my second GM meeting. I then realized how futile it would be, as there are people there for only one reason, and one person cannot change that. I'm still trying to figure out the motivation behind one of the most stupid, annoying comments ever heard, made at introduction by one of the BOD. Bu whatever motivated it was enough to alter my motivation for "making a mark" in that particular puddle of mud. Whether we're talking about skydiving or rocks on the ground, aspiration exists. Even a rock aspires to be something more; perhaps the foundation of a home, perhaps the conductor of heat in a chimney, or maybe even to be the proverbial stone that slays Goliath. But most everything aspires to be something more than what it/they is/are. It's a part of the lifespirit, to make better or attempt to make things better, the world in which *they* live, and it fundamentally changes who we are and/or the environment in which we/they live. It's called "evolution." Whether it's a "new slider," jumpsuit made from hemp, a training DVD, a psychology book, a new way of flying, or....?, if it fulfills a dream, occupies time, provides a short (or long-term) motivation, or allows a kinship within the sport for any reason... It's sometimes called "innovation." Innovation doesn't always work out the way the innovator wants. Everyone laughs at Ron Popiel for his "Spray on Hair" and his turkey roaster, but how many of have his knives, K-Tel Records, or other Ronco product in our closet? Bad ideas well implemented, good ideas badly implemented, bad ideas poorly implemented, and good ideas properly implemented benefit everyone, IMO. Not knowing where you're going teaches one to know where not to go. It's called "education." Some call it the "School of Hard Knocks." But at the end of the day, you learned it on you own, you trust the value and experience of the process, and usually, you (and often those around you) are better for it. The motivation behind it doesn't concern me, as we every so rarely understand what motivates someone to do anything.
  9. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jz5lcoxLfMo About 3:30 shows the diff between smooth-slo in the cam vs high speed shutter and slo-mo in an NLE.
  10. I've had the occasional error 99 with my XT, but not seen it with the 40D. In fact, I set up my XT specifically to reach the battery, in the event of the error 99.
  11. I shoot high shutterspeeds all the time. I'll upload some slowmo footage to YouTube shortly, that has a split screen to show the difference.
  12. if it's a PAL camera, it can Xfer data at other framerates, but it can't record them natively. FWIW, 30p doesn't do that much more for slo-mo. You'll do better upping the shutterspeed if you want good/better timestretch.
  13. For the very experienced, does waxing help with airflow? When I was on the swim team, we'd shave our bodies to lower resistance. If I shave, will I fly faster? It would cut down on the cost of Grecian formula for Ed and I.

    Pwned?!

Depends on who you ask, about where it comes from, but basically it means you're "owned." Some say it's "pawned" in shorthand, others say it's typo for "owned." In other words, you got your ass handed to you.
  15. I couldn't agree more. Choice; It's an adult-thing.
  16. If justice actually prevails, the court will: - Return the land to it's rightful owner. - Find the crooks guilty of perjury and fabrication of evidence. - Award damages to the Kirlins in the amount of their legal expenses, AND compensatory damages for their time spent on the case. - Strip the crooks of their licenses to practice law. And punitive damages to compensate for the emotional stress, loss of use, loss of enjoyment, distraction from "normal" life...
  17. Alice is/was great. Just did a shoot with him last week in PHX, he's a seriously gifted golfer. He still looks, acts, sounds like a rocker, too. Yes, I remember The Night Chicago Died and Paper Lace, but now we're dating ourselves in a bad way.
  18. I love the taste of Reebok in the morning, don't you?
  19. The OP didn't specify a loop. The question was, "is it possible to get enough above the canopy so one falls back into it." The answer is "yes." Aside from the shot posted, there is video of pilots doing exactly that, albeit intentionally. The suggestion of barrel roll vs loop was brought up by someone other than the OP.
  20. True, but notice in *this* particular shot, the camera is above the canopy and pilot, it's a ground-mounted camera, not a following aerial camera. Look closely, you can see another camera operator in the background on the cliff wall. In other words, it's not a trick of parallax or angle. There are at least 9 other cameras that show the same image from below, above, behind, and in to two sides. No, he's not directly above the canopy, but this is more than "slightly higher" than the canopy as well. It's not difficult to look at the angle of incident light compared to the angle of shadow on the cliff wall, and see what's there. As an aside, there is also a shot in "Keen and Abel" that demonstrates falling into a canopy, if I recall correctly.
  21. I'd suggest "Slightly" is somewhat subjective.
  22. I've received permission from JP to change the name of the discipline to "Atmowingie" but leaning towards "Wingmonauti." Could we get Yu** to calculate the mathematical accuracy of one moniker vs the other?
  23. One unique aspect with my brand of skydiving; the more I think, the more experiences I have, and the more I talk with others that have a longer history, I continue to become more and more LUCKY.
  24. I didn't suggest it was a forward loop, the question is whether the body could find itself above the canopy, and the answer is yes. Agreed, there probably isn't enough forward motion to carry a body forward/above/behind in a forward roll, as opposed to a very aligned barrel roll. But in a tight barrel roll, the body is above the canopy.
