  1. Hey everybody, The film festival is officially concluded (in terms of submission of entries). It's going to take a few days to wade through the boatload of new vids before a winner is determined. I don't think either HH or myself had any idea we'd see this many entries!! There are some really awesome works in there, and it's going to be very hard to determine a winner, I'm sure. Between Norman, Joe, HH, and myself, we'll find the best of the best however...just sit tight and we'll be announcing a winner very soon. ~d
  2. Don't knock it. When they *do* deliver in 2021, they'll probably have an audio package and a recording package that works, and you also get a trained technician for a week to be sure that the camera runs until he leaves. There is a training track on the RED here at NAB, embarassing as hell for them. Even their "big name" DP is embarassed, because the system keeps dropping frames, corrupting streams, etc. One guy called it the "Charlie Chaplin camera" because of how it is reminiscent of how films were made 70 years ago. Scarlet looks interesting, looks pretty cool, actually...but RED's reputation and hype precede them. This is one camera for which I don't want to be a guinea pig unless it's on someone else' dime.

    NAB 2008

It can be jumped. Are you man enough?
  4. That's just not true. I do work with computers, and still believe that some operating systems are better designed and work better than others, and that there's big differences in quality between different brands of computer hardware. Computers are no different than other products, some work well, and others don't. That's "just not true" in your opinion. In this *particular* scenario (and in most of the world) the discussion is about Mac vs PC. It's talking about XP or Vista vs OSX. Given that we operate approx 50 OSX machines in our company, and well over 100 PC's with either Vista or XP on them, I feel I'm pretty well entitled to my opinion that they are very little different these days. Some folks work well with sweatshirts on, others prefer a shirt and tie. Some folks need specific apps that run only on one platform or another. Neither OS is better than the other. It may well be that some HARDWARE vendors don't properly apply themselves to the OS, but that's true with both platforms. As a perfect example, the new MBP's don't work with *any* of the legacy projectors here at the LVCC in Las Vegas. If you have a Mac with ATI card in it, you're screwed if you want quality graphics. Those that have PC's, are just fine. Those that want to use an app like FCP need a Mac, because it's not available on the PC platform. They're just tools. Neither OS is better than the other. They're just different. There are those that stick their heads up their ass and make the OS "part of their lifestyle" when that in and of itself, is stupidity. Damn good thing carpenters aren't so stupid as to feel that there is only one kind of hammer, or a car mechanic thinking there is only one kind of screwdriver. Thank heaven a doctor isn't ignorant enough to think there is only one kind of pill for everybody. Computers are tools. Both primary/popular OS's are very good. There are better OS's, but they're not for the masses, so sticking to the current discussion...either OS works great. The question that needs to be answered is "Which apps do you want to run, and are they dual platform or locked to one platform/OS?" Since I work with both, I choose an MBP and boot in to Windows most of the time, but have OSX available to me when I need that, too. Some tools that run on both OS's run better on one OS than the other.
  5. Neither is better. It's a silly myth perpetuated by head-in-sand "liefstyles" as opposed to people who actually work with computers. Each has its advantages. I have both, I'm typing on a MacBook Pro that is predominantly set up for Bootcamp right now. Many specialized apps won't run on an apple; keep that in mind. Others run better on an Apple system. It's more about the apps you'll be using than the "coolness factor" of the laptop you choose, IMO. No such thing as a good, cheap Mac. But there are lots of very good, cheap PC's.

    FLDS Raid

I guess it depends on the definition of "aid" is. The branch of FLDS on the Utah/Arizona used to dump teenage boys in Salt Lake City. The old guys that ran the show didn't want the competion. The State of Utah never did a thing about it. If you weren't aware, LDS runs the state and the major media outlets. The UT/AZ gang also had dozens of allegations of abuse against them. The allegations were either ignored or investigated poorly. This went on for more than 30 years. According to recent news reports, the majority of funding for the support of the town was via welfare benefits. When 14 year old girls are applying for welfare for their kids, the state has a responsibility to investigate. They didn't. The overwhelming evidence of the deliberate supression of the facts about FLDS by the State of Utah and the LDS is very well documented. That is why FEDERAL intervention was required to start to rein them in. The feds are running the town now, last I heard. I haven't been following this story for a while. I am sure that this is unpleasant news for an LDS member, but the facts are what they are. No amount of wishing will make them untrue. If you look into how the pressure on the State of Utah and LDS came about over the past 10 tears or so, it is DIRECTLY attributable to the non-Mormons who started covering the stories that were suppressed by LDS owned news outlets. The 60 minutes story about the case that put the town in federal receivership was blacked out in Utah, the first time it was shown! That isn't aid and abetment? 60 Minutes wasn't the only media outlet that covered the story, just one of the biggest. Most of your post is accurate from my viewpoint, and I agree with everything you say except one thing: The state actually did do something about it, they just didn't take it into court as they should have. The eventual fallout was "The Lost Boys" which has more recently been dismissed due to lack of enthusiasm on the part of the boys, not the AG's office. There is so much more to this story, and it's far reaching. You'll start hearing more about Idaho, and likely Canada if the locals get their way (locals in Utah, not Texas). This isn't something that merely "occurred" but rather something that has been watched for a long time, and an informant merely gave them the reason to pull the trigger they've been itching to pull for a long time. As for the rest...yes, the LDS Church by nature of their control over the old AG's office (the more recent AG doesn't really seem to give a shit about the LDS church), and their control over the news has abetted the FLDS faith for a long time. Those days are ending. With the political climate, the LDS faith needs to distance itself as far as possible from the FLDS offshoot, even though the FLDS are pretty much true to the origins of the LDS faith, while the LDS faith bears little resemblance to what it was 100 years ago.
  8. You're probably not really changing the extension. Vista does this differently than XP, if you're using Vista? Click Computer in the Start menu. Press the Alt key on the right side of your keyboard. A hidden menu will appear in the Computer window. Click Tools and then click Folder Options. Click the View tab. Uncheck Hide extensions for known file types.
  9. I don't believe so, no. My system doesn't go back that far, so perhaps someone who has an older/slower system and has iLife can test from a downloadable clip, but I don't believe it can. iMovie 7 is when they added AVCHD (sorta).

    ATMONAUTI

I suspect it was one of the mods who wrote that Furnaromonauti page...given the threads. Funny stuff, thanks for posting.
  11. I think the mods Laszlo makes to these lil' cams is awesome. I wish I had one.
  12. Do you have your suit yet?
  13. With the NAB show beginning this week, there are no demo's to be had, but I expect to have one shortly (yeah, I've heard that before). It used to be that I always had these cams early, but this has recently changed with management changes, so it's not always as fast nor certain as it once was.
  14. I think you'll want to mount it externally anyway, ifyou want the video debrief. One thing I *really* like about the unit is that it allows the camera to never be removed from a cage/box/condom, and you can do video debrief with it, external microphone input to it. I look at a guy like Velocity photo who is using a wireless, and realize how perfect this is, because it's now plugging into the housing. Nice that's got a bolt-on rather than stick-on or zip-tie mount. But it is bigger. Wish I had one to put in my helmet to try out. With mine, I'm considering putting an external 3.5mm jack on there that will pigtail off the port.
  15. HypEye Pro D connector/controller works with non-LANC camcorders. Sine the units are not for sale, and Mark felt there are some questions being asked that the video link might answer, here is a short vid on how the non-LANC camcorders can be controlled.

    ATMONAUTI

Which one of you clowns took down the very funny Atmonauti content from the Wiki site? I wanted a copy of that for my scrapbook.
  17. I'm the wrong guy to ask...I prefer the best quality I can afford to fly jump after jump. HC5 would be my choice of those you're asking after. IMO, cheap is usually cheap at every level, so I tend to buy decent up front. Price is easily forgotten, from my experiences. I heard a rumor that the ABC might be dumping several HC5's very soon, due to AVCHD, you might want to keep an eye out for that. it's also just a rumor, so might be BS.
  18. You could, sure. But why would you? Half the beauty of a video is that it's edited to remove all the junk, titles and music added.
  19. Fixed for accuracy Sony's only (barely) decent lenses are OEM'd by Schneider, for their large format HDV and the new EX1. They don't have a decent (IMO) sub 62mm thread lens adapter. If you're in SD (like the 109), then the Cookie, Royal etc are the best way to go, as they offer higher resolution and better MTF.

    NAB 2008

If you happen to be in the vicinity of Las Vegas, and/or if you're checking out the NAB show, I do have 1 full conference pass left for the Post Production World Conference. Pass is valued at $1795.00, so I hate just having it in my pocket for the show and no one using it. This pass also gets you in to the massive Sony party on April 14, featuring Norman Kent and Les Stroud/Survivorman. PM me if you're interested. The show runs from April 14-17, and the PPWC runs from April 11-16.
  21. Not so much the lens design, but the way the system responds to it is a possibility.Usually, the more wide the lens, the less noticable any shake/vibration will be. So even with steadyshot enabled....it's odd that the wider lens has a bigger issue. Could be loose glass, could be the offset/step up ring creates some sort of circumstance. Or maybe NTSC just doesn't like you.
  22. A while back I posted a series of shots with a rez chart, I'm not where I can search at the moment, but if memory serves, rez is shy of 400lines, which isn't bad for an SD lens of it's type. It was higher than the other lenses I had available to test at the time. None of the Lo-pro single element SD lenses from Cookie, Royal, or Waycool can resolve more than half your HD camera. Hopefully this will change in the near future. I've seen some of what Max is working on recently, and impressed with what he's got going on, and Century has a new trick bit of glass they're announcing/launching at NAB next week. With HD comes better glass, and better glass either weighs more, or costs more, or both. BTW, the reason you don't see the vignette on a TV or in camera is because of overscan, that computers show and televisions/camera displays don't.
  23. Wow. Weird. I don't see that with my A1, and I too, have the Royal .3. I don't have a Waycool or Cookie to check out, but they're essentially the same lens. You definitely won't see vignetting with the Raynox 5050 or 3030, but they're twice the weight and 4 times the size.
