  1. 1) Do you have a link you can send me to a good source of music that can be purchased for use that is decent music with a variety that will not break the bank of a small budget? http://www.vasst.com/royalty_free.htm has a fairly comprehensive, although not complete list. 2) If I were to use copyrighted music for self promotion (demo reel), I understand that is a violation, question is can I be sued for money or will I just be issued a cease and assist type order? You can be sued for having bad breath...Yes, you can be sued for damages. Will you? Depends on who owns the content, how they perceive the damage, and what the actual damage is. Bear in mind however, copyright violation is now a criminal act as well as a civil action...So they *can* get you on either count. So far, only one person has been convicted (AFAIK) for criminal violation. 3) If I were commissioned to make an edit for someone and they provided me with copyrighted music, which will be in trouble, me or the entity that hired me to do the edit? All parties involved with the illegal master replication and sync license violation will be zapped, but you as an editor are particularly exposed because you committed the act, and this post alone demonstrates you knew it was wrongful. Consider how a tandem accident sues the DZ, aircraft, rig, whomever...it's not dissimilar. 4) Further to that point, if the company I am working for hires me to film an event, but I have nothing to do with the post production and they use copyrighted music in their production can I be held liable even though all I did was provide the raw footage? No. Not anymore so than a royalty-free stock footage provider can be held responsible for where their works show up and what they are synced to. 5) If I have already (and I have) made an infraction, how do I protect myself now that the damage has been done? Would it be sufficient to just stop, or do I need to also send a letter demanding that the edit no longer be used by anyone I provided it to? You can't protect yourself. You can't unring a bell. All you can do is say "I screwed up, I didn't know it was illegal at the time, I've stopped doing this, and I can't put the cat back in the bag. They they have to demonstrate damages for past violations (hard to do, if much time has passed). 6) If I cease on my own and begin to remain within legal boundaries, can I still be sued for prior infractions, or will the fact that I realized what I was doing is wrong and changed my practices be sufficient to avoid litigation? You can be sued for bad breath....but if you are nailed (it's highly unlikely, but becoming more likely every day with Youtube spiders, etc.) if you've ceased using illegal content, that'll go a long, long way towards any legal action that might come your way. Ignorance is no defense, but showing you've "realized the error of your ways..." helps, based on conversations I've had, panels I've sat upon, and how it's perceived by the industry as a whole. Keep in mind, I'm not a lawyer. That article you referenced is now nearly 5 years old, and a few things have changed in 5 years, mostly for the worst. Overall, that article is aimed at editors making dozens of replications, and it's a little over the top for tandem operations, although they're at high risk these days too, and the risk isn't getting any lesser. ********************
  2. Congrats, SteveO. You inspire me to keep heading in that direction. Gotta cartoon for me?
  3. You have that almost backwards. Your 15mm DSLR lens on your 35mm will be 15mm. You multiply by 1.6 (or other variable, depending on the camera) because the sensor on the DSLR is smaller in surface area than a 35mm opening would be/is. You can open the two cams side by side and see exactly what I'm referring to. So...the marked focal length of lenses is almost always the 35mm equivalent, but the actual width/focal length is varied in a DSLR depending on the brand of camera you've purchased. There are a lot of threads on this subject here, and on the web.
  4. Still waiting on real examples of the harm all these black eyes have caused....... If a demo can't be done into a large public area, then skydiving misses out on a positive PR opportunity. Miss out on enough of them, the well starts to dry up. The well dries up, no more tandems. No more tandems, fewer fun loads go up at most DZ's. Like it or not, public perception of our sport fuels aircraft in most areas. Same with anything else. Additionally, a bad landing in a public area only furthers the perception that skydivers are crazy SOB's that land on whatever, wherever whenever. Bad landings that injure people or property cause insurance rates to rise, perceptions and acceptance to decline, and impacts the marketing of the sport. All of which are important in the larger picture. Maybe you own a DZ that doesn't sell tandems and only caters to skydivers that pay enough for jump tickets to keep food on your table?
  5. you shoulda read the "READ ME FIRST" sticky at the top of this page... Sorry to hear these guys burned you.
  6. I think for whatever reason, they didn't air this stunt. I rewound and watched again. It wouldn't have fit well in to the story they'd set up, no matter how cool it was.
  7. http://skydivernetwork.ning.com/photo/photo/show?id=1197788%3APhoto%3A74715&context=user This isn't the winning/finalist entry, I think Scotty is keeping that one quiet until the dust clears or it's print-pub'd. This is one of the worst shots that Scotty got, IMO, but it's one you can see...
  8. Whose amazing Discovery Shuttle shot featuring Grey Mike, Purvple Mike, and myself, ended up being a finalist (and maybe/I hope) the winner of the USA Today International photo contest. Very cool, Scotty!!!
  9. this takes that long because you're recompressing MPEG2 to MPEG4 and that does take time. But if you were shooting AVCHD, and using a non-recompression software (such as Sony Vegas), then there is no recompression time. Understanding the formats and their relationships to each other is pretty important. If you have DVDA 5, and Vegas Pro 8, you wouldn't be recompressing your MPEG2 from your HC5, it would be a straight shot from the camera to BD.
  10. This bears repeating. Sony's 69.00 software is quite similar to Apple's 1699.00 software with regard to editing. Except it doesn't require conforming framerates, allows AVDHD, HDV, SD, DV, and HDCAM on the same timeline regardless of framerate.
  11. If you have a computer purchased in the past 6 months, this is simply not so. AVCHD can be dealt with intelligently in *most* editing apps (except Adobe and FCS) and can non-recompression burn to BD or compress nicely to go to SD DVD as MPG 2 FCS sucks in this workflow, however. Anyway...the HDMI or component out from any HD camcorder is the *BEST* option for debrief. And....big or small...most HD is 1080i, which isn't at all relevant to camera sizes. 720p is all but dead. There is nothing consumer-available nor prosumer available that has a higher resolution than 1080i. If you have an intelligent NLE, editing AVCHD, HDV, P2, HDCAM, Infinity, or plain vanilla MPEG4HD is all the same as editing DV, excepting the screen aspect ratio (SAR).
  12. nice shots. You might wanna go easy on Pshopping the saturation tho. Gamma might be a better control, or Shadows/Highlights. The raft shot has a lot of action. Nice angle!
  13. Classic description of a dropout. You lose one frame in HDV, you have lost as many as 15. HDV uses a structure called "GOP" and if you lose an I frame...you lose all subsequent B and P frames too. Short answer, you likely had a dropout
  14. There's always next year. You were missed. We even talked about you. A LOT. HERE is the link to the story that Howard screengrabbed. It wasn't available last night. We're hoping to get a TRACON transcript; they kept referring to us as "batmen" and had multiple radar signatures that claimed on one of the high-altitude jumps, that they had a return of 150 mph. I wanna see that in writing.

  16. Weather was PERFECT...Eagles were flying, hawks chasing Joey Allred's pilot chute, we got in LOTS of great jumps, too busy jumping to say much during the event. Perhaps one of the highlights of the event was Justin Shorb intentionally burbling Purple Mike on national television. Some vertical flocks, the high altitude jump over Farnsworth Peak, Scott Callantine's ridiculously long ride (in a Raptor, no less), then there was the jump where Stuu, Brian, Justin, and myself did docks, barrel rolls, and Brian's sweet forward rolls. Oh, can't forget Scotty's pix of the 9 way and 10way diamonds, open diamonds. Avery kicked ass as well. Hmmm.....all in all, we had two groups, both filling the plane. Even though it was a King Air, we floated three on every jump. Shawn kicked ass on a couple of two way and nine-way dives, John B. kept in the air as well. If Justin seems loopy next time you see him, it's because his oxygen supply somehow disconnected, and he didn't get clean oxygen until around 19K. I don't recommend buddy breathing with him, he hogs the supply. I hope everyone made it home safely, and thanks to Flock University, Justin Shorb, Rick Hough, Scott Callantine, hell...the list is long. Thanks to all both local and not-local that made this a super fun, succeessful event.

Aside from the greater manual control, it has a better encoder. I haven't had the opp to dual mount for comparison.
  18. a-PLEASE read the sticky at the top of this forum...it would have answered this question. b-PLEASE read the sticky at the top of this forum, it will answer questions before others in the community start asking them. c-you can't use an HDD-based camera in freefall, with very few exceptions. HDD's fail above 3000 metres.
  19. Most folks are arriving tonight, but we are getting some small flocks together. We're exiting over the Great Salt Lake, flying about 3 miles to the DZ. Air is dense due to smoke from California fires, but it is a blast. Here's a screengrab of the first jump today.
  20. I'll wait until I'm 50, and no one cares anymore. Some of us will still care when you're 50, so why wait?
  21. Folx already arriving, air is perfect for wingsuits (some humidity for thickness, some smoke from the California fires for great pix) expecting nice weather. this weekend. Locals are coming out, nice FFC's happening Friday. Only thing missing is a bigger aircraft, but there's always next time.
  22. unfortunately, there is no merge, there is only copy/paste, but you're right, the thread should be merged or locked. Therefore...
  23. Now you're just being mean, Glenn We're producing a short piece on same-gender relationships, and the client demands this version as a counter point to a dialog with religious figures. It hasn't been released as a download due to licensing issues with the Munich Philharmonic/union requirements. Same reason the album is out of print.
