  1. This is an old thread regurged by one of Kynan1's friends, mostly to point out that Kynan didn't die, and he apparently has 600 camera jumps in one year based on the current profile numbers. I'd imagine this is possible on a very busy DZ. I know one tandem master/AFFI/camera guy whose numbers jumped from 1300 to 3000 in less than a year. If this is the case, Kynan is likely very current, probably very safe, and didn't fit the oft-thought of statistic of being dangerous at sub 100 jumps. Other side of that being only last week I saw a guy flying a camera with low jump numbers, and he was so intent on landing while shooting someone landing next to him, he hit someone who had already landed, giving them both a lot of bruises and embarassment, plus a talking to by a well-known S&TA. I didn't see him wearing the camera helmet again that weekend. Hey Kynan, if you're out there, let everyone know how you're doing...
  2. Squeak, I completely agree with you. It's a small community, and that is a very inappropriate action, IMO. It's been done to me, too. I'm hopeful that there is some reasonable explanation for this, such as maybe a third-party company managing a website/marketing is responsible or something. I'd hate to think that any skydiver would stoop this low (although I've definitely seen unethical and dishonest people around a DZ) to win business. for the time being, I'm going to lock this thread until Max/Royal has the opportunity to step forward and comment on it. There may be a story there, maybe there isn't. If there is, then it's not right to crucify anyone without them having the right to comment, and if there isn't, I guess that'll come out too. Please PM me if there is anything pertinent to be added to this story.
  3. As recommended, please view the FAQ at the top of this page. Reading the SIM is a good idea too. You list The Ranch as your home DZ, talk to the camera flyers there.
  4. you mean there is a profit to be found somewhere in skydiving photography? Pilotdave has the most concise and correct technical answer, but some small DZ's will let folks start jumping cams with tandems at 100 jumps or less. Talked to a guy on the phone recently in the Midwest that has 50 jumps and claims to already have a couple dozen tandem video jumps. Dunno if it's accurate, but from how he spoke, it seemed to be. If you're like most that are serious about photography, you'll spend most of your profit on what goes on top of your head for a while. If quality and the quest for perfection aren't part of your direction...then I suppose you could start making money on your first tandem skydive. for me...if it's not a paying tandem, I'll go out on my own nickel and practice new ideas on a non-paying tandem.
  5. similar response as Parachutists... A-you had the chance to vote like everyone else. B-The winning videos had concepts, rather than just being a collection of firewired video. It wasn't about who is the most bad-ass flyer. C-Give specific examples, because not only are folks already considering next year's contest, but as one of the judges, I'd like to read a specific of where you think all four of us missed the mark, particularly for first, second, and third.
  6. if that's truly the case, go after them if you own the footage. PM me if you need info on how to best go about it. If they b'cast in spite of no release...they're in trouble
  7. Pilot-one....I not only have a separate circuit for my audio gear, I have a separate BREAKER BOX for the entire audio studio with its own grounding system (star config) with Bryston leveler, not to mention the John Hardy M1 systems custom built with Jensen isolators and Xformers. If you honestly think that the POWER cable makes a diff at this level.... I started in this biz working for Tom Stockham (google him if you don't know who he is) and then worked for Ray Kimber for quite a while. I'm an audio geek too....but this power cable (and data cables) are ridiculous, and for the uber-arrogant, IMO. If you wanna talk about transparency of analog, clean power, yada yada, that's another discussion. But the power cable with no cleaning...srry. Ain't buying. And...if you're over 40, it's even more silly, but it's like skydiving; a helluva lot of fun to see who measures bigger when it's all laid out. BTW, at the moment, RED is useless for almost everything. Funny it was brought up...I'm in Edmonton Canada speaking at a film fest, and presenting a RED. Several filmmakers came up and had their sad little misconception that the RED ONE is an independent (read super low budget) filmmaker's dream. It's not. It's little different than working with a typical 5-man production crew with a 16 or 35mm system with boomed audio. And while eventually it might end up working out...I'll take a Genesis/Genocide, Dalsa, or Viper any day of the week. They actually work. But I am excited to see the Scarlet ship. Seems that that one won't be so FUBAR.
  8. I recognize that shot The other thing worth mentioning is how it was hanging down into your legs on landing, could have easily tripped you up. The pic as seen, is somewhat tame compared to what you looked like on landing.
  9. So I guess I don't need to cancel your appointment. DOH...... fortunately, I get to avoid the experience. Manchester/MHT is actually cheaper in the end, not including rental car...
  10. For the guy that jumps tandems, fun jumps, and wingsuits but has only one helmet, I can see needing a ringsight, but this is a perfect example of a removable ringsite like Schumachers. Pia's post provides some good insight as well. Glad to hear about the nylon screws working as expected. It calls to mind JC Colclasure's entanglement with the camera that ripped the top from the bottom of the camera. One comment he makes at the first of the video is that "there is no snag point on this helmet" until he mounted a ringsite. Actually, look closely at the ladder strap. My first camera jump with a friend's helmet that had a similar strap resulted in the riser striking the excess strap and giving my head a good toss, and unseating the chin cup from my chin. This was one of the reasons I chose to purchase a Tonfly, but I think that trimming excess strap is probably nearly as good. As an aside, until recently I've always kept my excess stowed with rubber bands attached to the slinks. I've only recently started not using the bands in favor of the toggle keeps on the risers. Kinda considering going back to the bands, which keep the excess not only much tighter, but stowed much higher as well. Thoughts?
  11. Sorry for the delay! Hadn't seen the thread. Load was: Scotty Burns (Organizer, photographer) Mike Masheff (Spotter, wingsuit base) Purple Mike (thankfully not spotting) Myself (green guy, total newb, initial Sebastian experience) Harry Parker (radical madman of ridiculous talent) There were a few hop n' pops before us, and then our turn before a tandem. But...GreyMike held us in the door (thanks, Mike) because even though we'd been told the shuttle was lifting off, he could see it wasn't. I saw the rockets flame the second I got out the door. Had we been even a few seconds earlier, there is no way Scotty could have gotten the shots he got. We'd have been too low, and we started flying very hard right out of the door. Due to a little adrenaline, the jump went slightly further over the ocean than planned, and slightly faster as we burned back towards land. Lessons learned on this jump: ~Have GreyMike take a valium before the jump; he was excited and between his skill and bigass soit, he flies FAST! ~Keep PurpleMike away from tandem students during intense jumps. ~Look before you leap ~Scotty Burns likes kisses on the cheek. KungFu Panda is lovable though. ~Harry is.....well.....Harry. When out far over water, pay more attention to the land, direction, and altitude rather than watching the shuttle, because it's likely hard to swim in a wingsuit. With the airlocks on a Tonysuit, I can't help but wonder if one really needs a flotation device? Scotty was able to snarf a few good photos even though we were only in position for a few seconds before burning hard back towards the DZ. Some have been submitted for pub, but he said this one could be shared. Very appreciative of Scotty, GreyMike, PurplieMike, and Harry for allowing me to be a part of their very special (and historic) jump. Thanks guys! Beer was good, company was better.
  12. I would just as soon have an exam from an overweight, odiferous gay OB-GYN than fly into Logan. That's aside from considering the 28% taxes/fees on a rental car out of Logan. Manchester looked like a decent option, and it's only 100.00 more than Logan. I'll save that much on just the rental car. Thanks for the point.
  13. In order to avoid Logan, what is the best option for flying in? Looking at the map, seems like the alternatives look about the same distance, but I don't know the area well.

    Lens Tests

Baby Death isn't my name for it, it's the nickname handed to it by skateboarders a few years back. Baby Death is generally rated at 650 lines, but as you can see, it's slightly higher. Bear in mind, these are both interlaced cams, and captured as interlaced, screen shots are progressive by default, so lines are blended, presenting a worse than actual view, which is generally accepted as the best way to fairly view lenses. yes, the Century is a slightly higher grade lens than the Raynox, but the Raynox is also a great lens, when cost is factored.

    Lens Tests

This is by no means complete, and the full article has yet to be approved, so it might be a few days before it's up entirely, but wanted to share at least the test images with everyone so you can see how the various lenses fare. Please be sure to read the bottom of the page, because this is not a cut-dried test. To be 100% equal and fair to each lens, the center of the lens should be at the resolution scale, rather than center of image. But, the point of this particular test was to measure for on center target, not to present each lens at its very best. Click each image to view an HD screengrab. Bear in mind that wide lenses are at their worst as you move away from the center of the lens. Hope this helps some of you make decisions about lenses.
  16. it uses the same controller data, but it isn't LANC. LANC is a trademarked protocol that Sony OEM owns, that is licensed to Canon and Sony Electronics. In a way, it's just semantics, but the control/remote port has more to it than they're using w/LANC
  17. Why? I've shot a fair amount with Arri, don't need a crew. I can manage it on my own. I don't believe Greg Gasson carries a crew with his 235. The RED One is a PITA, pain and simple. Google around, you won't find many owners happy with their camera. Battery probs, audio probs, viewfinder issues, mount issues...They'll all be worked out, but it's vapor-ware that turned into "speculation-ware" that turned into "o shit, we gotta ship this now and we'll update later-ware." StudioMagazine has a great blog on the "Great Red Hype."
  18. I received mine last week, with the expansion kit. Have it wired to my Optima too. Works VERY well. I'm a huge fan, and just ordered another one for my wingsuit helmet. I used the expansion kit to wire a smaller switch on my helmet, I didn't want to drill out the larger hole just yet, and am putting in a helmet-mounted/chassis mount fourpoint 3.5mm jack for the debrief port. AFAIC, Hypoxic hit this ball well outta the park. It's a geek's dream.
  19. If you call a camera that requires a crew of at LEAST two right now to be "less than trouble free," you're right on the money. RED sucks, plain and simple. Not only are we not using our 20K boat anchor, top cats like Jodi Eldred have publically said "I'll never use RED in it's current state on any paying project." Scarlet looks to be a different story, it looked sweet at NAB, but then again, so did RED One 3 years ago. MB38 has the best inside track on RED, but until it ships, I'm not gambling another dime on this manufacturer.
  20. that's soon going to be double the cost of jumping at Lodi....

    My 300th last month

Very cool, Fozz! Your laugh always makes the jumping that much more fun. Go Orange!
  22. Start by reading the sticky at the top of this forum. Talk to local photographers at your DZ. Once you're off student status, work on flying skills relative to others in the air. Tunnel time is good. Ground skills; learn how the cameras work, learn what they can and can't do.
  23. A foam block beneath the lens may help support it better. And/or you can look at putting elastic/bungee over the lens to better secure it/dampen movement. Someone else may have a better idea
  24. But that one doesn't go to 11
