Not only did he recently make Staff Sargeant, he also did his 100th skydive. Karl and Brett worked with him to create a successful hybrid. Of course, he got the requisite pie'ing, although Dru and others that helped pelt him disappeared once the camera came out. Congrats, Mike. Thanks for letting me be a part of your moment.

How many jumps before using a camera?
DSE replied to DON321's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Not gonna jump all over you "because I want to protect my piece of the skydiving dollar pie" because frankly, I don't make enough with a video camera on my head in a month to match what I make in half a day on the ground...It's not enough "to protect." However, I *have* seen on two occasions, people injured specifically because of a camera, and seen an extremely competent pro camera flyer (12,000 jumps) land in a very bad off because of the camera being a distraction. 200 jumps as a value suggests one _should_ have enough awareness to begin to consider managing all that a camera brings to the table. We've all met the 1000 jump jackass and the 100 jump wonder. Technology does indeed make wearing the gear easier, but it does nothing to change the attitude, ability, awareness of the skydiver wearing it. And...there have already been fatalities of sub-200 jump skydivers wearing cameras where a subjective debate may or may not reveal that the camera was or was not related to the incident. Even if the camera contributed only 10%, isn't that enough to give one pause? I mean....there is a thread in another forum about how Norman Kent's wife, Nicole, is unsafe and potentially going to crater because of an untied shoelace. -
Hate to argue this one, but if you're importing over Firewire, there is zero quality difference from FCP to Premiere, or Vegas, or Avid, or anything else using DV over 1394 as ingest. Bits are bits. It's like saying a text document is more prone to accurate spelling in iWork than in Word. If you use the Easy templates to match source to project/sequence, then quality in/out is exactly the same in FCP/S, iMovie, Premiere for Apple, or Avid for Apple. That said...different MPEG encoders, bitrates will create different qualities of output, but that's not relevant to the former paragraph. Compressor looks like sh** compared to Cinemacraft, and oddly enough, iMovie export has some better encoding opportunities than Compressor, IMO. build a droplet for Compressor with a bitrate of not more than 8Mbps for tandem vids or typical skydive vids, you'll be very happy, I'm sure.

It's not terribly unusual to see a Vampire in a flock. 'Specially one that has it's ass ripped into shreds from butt-first landings.

how well this does or doesn't work is entirely dependent on the the camera. Some are native 1920 x 1080, others are 1440 x 1080. BTW, the apple decoder for windows (wonderful thing). http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/appleproresquicktimedecoder10forwindows.html

hope to see you there.I've always enjoyed Indian Summer, Summerfest, and Jazz in the Park in MKE. Fun gigs to play.

It works well, but unfortunately doesn't convert to ProRes yet...but my understanding is that with the new tools coming, it will. Additionally there is finally a decoder for ProRes on Windows...very nice. And free

A-no need to rotate to see loss due to recompression of a compressed format such as jpg. Shifting one pixel is enough to force recompression. It's one of the testing methods we use to determine difference between source and multi-recompressions. B-While your direction is a good thought, it's not relevant to this discussion at all. The encoder is DV, in camera. There are no choices. The decoder is DV, in software. No choices. Most likely, the problem stems from incorrect sequence settings in FCP, since it really likes everything in the timeline to match source, or it's an output setting, such as attempting to upscale 720x576 to 960x540.
-
If you're into unique music, my band and I are performing at Indian Summer in Milwaukee. Friday, Sept 5 Miller Ampitheatre Summerfest grounds 10:00 p.m. Part of the performance has skydiving video projected as we perform.

If you are using Firewire, then you are digital only. I'm not sure what you're looking for with the AV/DV menu. AV output is analog, DV (firewire) is digital. If you're using FCP, then use the Easy template for PAL DV Widescreen to import/capture. that will be 720 x 576, 50i.
-
Only if you're importing over analog will you lose quality. If you're coming in over Firewire or card Xfer, it's merely bits, and you can't lose quality on ingest. However, you *can* lose quality if your sequence settings aren't correct, and you render to an odd format.

Have you ever shot stills with the XT Kit flash?
DSE replied to Peej's topic in Photography and Video
Aren't you doing so already?? -
not sure quite what to say, Stoney, except "thank you for listening." I've been composing a little while I fly...one of these days, I'll finish "Ghosts and Lovers," which has been in the studio for about 2 years now.

Labor Day weekend Turbine C-16 Caribou weekend at Z-Hills
DSE replied to SkymonkeyONE's topic in Wing Suit Flying
sure wish we could be there. -
Search...there are LOTS of alternatives, but DV, AVCHD, or HDV are all better than MPEG4 cams, particularly these cheap "sport" cams.

Actually, that story makes it even more fun to poke at. Doing something stupid on a moving truck is arguably safer than doing something stupid with a camera on your head filming tandems at this point in your career. -
Sounds like you know something the AG of my state doesn't know. Care to elaborate? yes, I do daily speak with clients in the middle east. CLEARly you're in the dark about what I'm speaking of, and obviously you don't travel much. Nope, I'm not talking about independent contractors, and not referring to the TSA, which is a joke of unprecedented proportion. Hard to be a well-rounded citizen of the planet if one hasn't experienced much of it first-hand, but it's easy to be paranoid if one doesn't know much about those you feel the need to be frightened of. That said...I'm not advocating either camp in this thread, and won't. Yes, "undue and unprecedented in my lifetime" is my opinion based on my experience. The Christian right that supports McCain scares the hell out of me. Just as much as the fanatic Muslims frighten me. IMO, they're both at opposite ends of the same circle. The difference is, the Muslims aren't knocking on my door telling me how evil I am, and they're not passing laws in my country, either.
-
I am forced to deal with Christianity having an undue and unprecedented influence upon the leaders of the nation in which I live. My cell phone records, library activity, and other personal behaviors are either monitored, or legal to monitor. My rights as a traveling citizen may not have ended, but they've been significantly inconvenienced both in this country and other countries as responses to our own national paranoia. Privileges I once enjoyed as a natural part of my pursuit of happiness are now relegated to being paid for via private, 3rd parties that our government has contracted, ie; independent taxation... The list is lengthy. It may not be tied to one party or the other, but the list is lengthy.

Home DZ. We use: A Sony RM1 Blu-ray authoring system w/2 DVD burners. Dell 6300 series laptop Custom-built desktop, dunno what dual proc is in it (Chris?) we use external USB drives as "server drives" capturing everything to them so all three machines can access whatever, remotely. Chris/Parachutist has it set up for remote editing access as well, so if we want to edit a video from home...we can. or, if one of us needs to fix an edit issue...we can. With the VASST Ultimate S software and Sony Vegas...you can REALLY hustle ass and create video. We'll have a new product announcement very soon that will speed it up even more, to where it's just minor cuts to fix timing/heads-tails. Imagine a one-button process to ingest and edit, and one more button to burn to a menu-driven, personalized DVD... Tapeless workflows SERIOUSLY benefit from this system. Tape workflows benefit, but not as much because tape is a real-time ingest no matter what.

Look for a 5D replacement soon. I saw this cam, and it's imaging isn't any better than the 40, but it's got HDMI and slideshow in it. So...come down off a jump, plug into HDMI, start the slideshow while Xferring images to a DVD. Students LOVE looking at pix on a bigscreen...and it keeps them occupied while you're packing, editing, whatever. UDMA is great too, but it's not *that* big a deal, since the camera isn't shooting any faster than the 40. If I was looking to buy in the next 3 months, I'd get a 50. If I owned a 40 now, I'd stick with it. If I needed a body tomorrow, obviously...I'd get a 40.

sorry I missed a cred in there, I went by the folders, and have 6 files with no names on them. Apologies to whomever else I captured but didn't name. 'nother reason I'm loving cards; they have ID on them. And yes, the flight was long and I was tired. Stayed too late Sun night, too early Mon morning. Lurch, most of my music is instrumental, but some has vocals. FWIW, I listen to the same stuff as you, but add some Tool in there, plus Stereoside, AlterBridge...

Avery, any box that says "HC" on it will fit the HC 3, 5, 7, or 9. They're physically all the same size, and the only marginal difference is in the battery depth, which varies by about 1/4' Bonehead, Cookie, Tonfly all have boxes that fit. The SR12 won't fit. It has a completely different footprint.
