  1. Line burn on an ankle, yes. Not as bad this afternoon as Saturday, but you can see the remains of what was a cut/abrasion (not the scar, but the red perpendicular to the scar).
  2. Congrats and many happy landings! Post pix when you got em'.
  3. Uh...Craig, me, Skymama, and a few others have really enjoyed Glen's porn collection of nylon and skin. The "Whores w/Wings" folder was really creative/inspired. Who'da thought you could wear Stilettos with a Vampire?
  4. Coupla comments: A-Crossposting is against the TOS. B-The moderators have already been very lenient in allowing the topic and related links in multiple forums, demonstrating that the mods too, want to see Scotty and Skydiving succeed in this contest. C-Tweaking the mods with this sort of thread doesn't bode well for anyone, and casts a bad light overall. D-I have far more posts than I have jumps...does that make me a dick? Or...does it mean that I answer a lot of posts (most of mine are in the Photo forum, but if you only look at #'s, you won't see that). Mods don't have it easy. We have to monitor a lot of situations, herd cats, kill fake usernames that attack or applaud others (often when it's not warranted, hence the fake username). We get paid exactly the same amount as you're paid to post...and get a lot more aggravation out of it (but we do get our names in green, so take that, SUCKA!) We also get to read all your spicy PM's, can see inside your computer and browse your porn collection, and know the combination to your DZ locker). Seriously, the spammed posts broke the rules...let it go. I'm not Skymama...but you made me choke on my gum too. I'm gonna grow my numbers to match. Effective immediately; DSE has 4441 jumps. I fly like sh^^ for those numbers, but heck, I know one guy that went from 1300 to 3K overnight.
  5. VERY nice story/photos written by Brian Buckland on the Boston Globe website. There are some great photos in there.
  6. The video makes it fairly clear it wasn't a riser strike. The bottom of the still camera is bent at an angle that makes it reasonably clear it was the weight of the camera that threw it forward hard enough to bend the bottom (there are two angles of bend, one that appears to be from impact, the other from being thrown/knocked/tossed whatever from the helmet). The video camera lens adapter is fairly cheep, and it tore the threads on the video camera, on the TOP of the vid cam, again indicating it was a downward force. My chest is bruised from my helmet bottom/chin striking it, and my right ankle has lineburn/cut on it from being tossed upside down. the original thought was that my slider was left collapsed (couldn't remember if I'd opened it up or not, but thought I had). The video does show that the slider was not collapsed, that throws that theory out. Coulda been a slider down, but it's doubtful, packer is pretty good. Coulda been line dump. We'd had a conversation earlier in the day about the stoes on my Dbag. No, I'm not 100% SURE it wasn't a riser strike, it's possible. I could have hit the releases with my hand when I was tossed upside down and hit the lines, too. I've been waiting on a still camera plate from Terry since Xmas of 07. Still don't have it. But...my CX12 stayed nicely in place, thanks to a very well made and mounted cage/plate that Terry designed and built. Just wish I had the still mount I've beenwaiting for, it might have saved me the loss. Frost, I figured Phree's post answered most of your questions. I only have a medium weight bungee on the front of the still to help "hold" it in place to take some of the opening shock from the carbon mount. Flat Top Pro with Schumacher plate/cage, carbon fibre L bracket on forehead, and a piece of aluminum for vertical mount that a DZ.commer made for me.
  7. I have excellent homeowners (and amazing business coverage) but that 300.00 per year doesn't cover specific skydiving rider policies partially becaus they're work, in addition to other things. We have over 100 cameras in our inventory, not to mention the rest of the gear, about 10% of it is in my home at any given time. Fire and special activities are not covered in the business policy, either. My homeowners *will* cover the camera, but it's a huge PITA (actually worth the 300.00 anyway, to not have to deal w/it) to collect and make a claim. Believe me...with the assets from my personal studio, video production business, audio business/studio, and my personal belongings....I've got the insurance thing dialed in.
  8. he was an amazing person, an inspired musician...
  9. I don't intend to hurt myself - but...accidents do happen... So hold up here...An experienced skydiver told you to not jump that canopy? You still are jumping it, and being flip about it to people whom have observed your skills firsthand?
  10. The Extended Service Plan is expensive, but today it saved me a fair amount of cash... Had a very weird and hard opening that tore my still cam/lens and my video camera's wide angle adapter from my helmet. Not sure exactly what happened to cause them to fly, it wasn't riser strike, and the mount on the helmet is totally intact and feels solid. That said... my 40D, 15mm EF lens took a 3000' tumble. Only part salvageable was the 8GB CF card and the remote cable that was on a breakaway connector. Called Ritz today, and they will have it replaced in two weeks, and the local manager is sympathetic enough to let me "borrow" a 40D and lens until "replacement" arrives. Cost me 300.00 per year for the warranty, and well worth it. If you buy from Best Buy (where I bought the lens) check your ESP *carefully* as they just recently changed their policy and you could find yourself hosed. Ritz recently changed theirs too, but my agreement was "grandfathered." Here's the funny/lucky part; my ESP expires in 3 days. I renewed first thing this morning before going in to see them.
  11. APSC vs full frame sensors have been discussed at length in the forum, you might want to do a search. it's a common discussion, and doesn't hurt to revisit it, but fortunately, there is a lot of information (and much less complex than how you're presenting it here) on the subject both here in this forum and on the web in general.
  12. Hey Scotty! We're all wishing you the best and rooting for ya, but please don't Xpost? Please bump the threads in GENERAL or the one in BONFIRE Good luck, Kung Fu Panda!
  13. Where in the world is the ground littered with craters from all these dangerous people? You surely are aware of the dozens (if not hundreds) of studies that prove that in many situations, awareness and speed of response are increased due to music, right? Or are you one of those old folks that think everyone who listens to an iPod does so at max volume? Do you wear earplugs, too? It also doesn't take 50,000 jumps to realize that some folks pull opinions out of their backside without taking the time to understand the topic and/or options available. In fact, I'd suspect that it takes a lot fewer than 50,000 jumps to realize that folks spewing untried things generate and follow a dangerous dogma (45 degree rule, anyone?) BTW, I listened to Skydive Radio on my iPod yesterday during the climb to altitude. Does that make me less dangerous? It's a great episode with Norman Kent. Well worth the listen.
  14. Surfer is climbing, Scotty is dropping behind. What's scary is that yesterday the votes were around 16k total with the Overlook and the Eagle around 28% and Surfer around 10%. We need to hang in there for Scotty, only two days left to vote. Looking forward to seeing this pic on the front of the LifeStyle section of USA Today!
  15. Happy birthday Chuck! From your phone call last night, sounds like you guys had a helluva party. 45...man....I see you in my rearview mirror.
  16. Nice...the wingsuit pic is hanging in there against the other two. Vote each day, gang, let's see skydiving make it to the front page of the Lifestyle section of USA today! Go Scotty! GoFast?!
  17. Your preferences are probably different; you might be ignoring 3rd party codecs now?
  18. C'mon...the bite switch thing is elegant. Just to keep beating the horse, given some of the silliness. The newbie skydiver should never consider doing this. Ever. Any more than a newbie should be wearing a camera before 200 jumps, or wingloading at 1.5 at 100 jumps. If you ARE going to do it, talk to someone who has a lot of experience with it, because there are a lot of "wrong" ways, IMO, and only a couple right ways (again, IMO). Statistically, it *is* safer to skydive with an iPod than it is to skydive without one. Statistically, it's probably safer to skydive with a live rattlesnake in your jumpsuit than it is to skydive without one. I use the statistic model to point out how silly some of the arguments are. FWIW, one of my most close friends is a deaf skydiver. He can't hear under canopy or anywhere else. I can hear him, even wearing headphones. He's very safe... and gets treated no differently because he's deaf, other than people tapping him on the shoulder vs yelling at him Did a little ad lib CRW the other day with a guy, I was wearing headphones, he was wearing silencer earplugs. He could not hear me, I could hear him.
  19. DSE

    I'm so hurt.

Don't forget the cowards that send nasty PM's that then prevent responses from being sent. "Ouch, I've been bitch-slapped by a chicken-shit!"

    Wet Optima

I simply opened mine up, removed the battery, allowed it to dry very well on the dash of my car for a couple days, all was well. But...if you left the battery in...all bets may be off.
  21. You DEFINITELY need protection with this camera. Only a fool would jump it without protection, because it's cheaply made (poorly made) IMO. Even the encoder can't handle much, but it does have full size sensors.
  22. Yeah, I'm aware of this, and in JumpTrack, it's easy to see where deployment actually is, and can be manually adjusted to reflect real values. But..I'm lazy. I'd just like to connect, log, and move on.
  23. I too, use an Altitrack and *most* of the time it works. I've had around 30 out of 300 jumps "break" but it might be due to the high speed of the King. It frequently thinks I deploy at 10K. I've tried almost everything. I also had no problems with it in my Blade, but the Mach1 seems to have probs. Neptune 2 does the same thing; I have on in my helmet along with an Optima for audible only. Waiting patiently (or not so patiently) for the N3 that was due out last month or so. Hoping it's better.
  24. This debate is ridiculously old. And stupid. Yet, if whuffos are going to stick to ignorant and subjective concepts such as "the skydive is/isn't better with tunes" then I'll stick to the insipid, yet perfect argument that I can prove skydiving is more safe with iPods turned up full blast at all times than skydiving without an iPod. Until you provide evidence otherwise, your argument has zero merit. My evidence is in the form of hard, indesputable, calculable and demonstrable fact. Yours is 'your opinion' and we all know about opinions, right?
  25. I've seen something like happen too, Dave. And I've seen the plane stop for people without buckled on/secured helmets, and people stopping the aircraft because of forgotten goggles, altimeters, and in one case...a rig. No PLD involved there. Volume is a primary consideration. The right headphones, properly seated, allow for nominal to low volumes that allow conversation to occur. My PLD is set up so that it's inside my jumpsuit and controlled through the fabric, wires entirely inside my jumpsuit to my neck. When my helmet goes on, my right ear module comes out. I *can* hear my Optima with the right module inserted, but I prefer to not be risking a bump of the volume or a very loud passage to affect how well I hear it. Additionally, the Optima is wired to my HypEye, and so I also have a visual indicator in addition to the audible. I'd say my parents taught me well. BTW, JohnRich...I did try to respond to your acerbic PM, but you aren't accepting PMs from me. I owe beer. First drive-by insulting I've received, ever. Be sure you're not using "inserted" and sealed earbuds if you are dumb enough to try this. If the ear can't pass air, it can (and likely will) suck the earphone into the ear canal, which can be easily torn. Just ask the guys at Pepperell about the day that my inner ear bled like a stuck pig, blood running down my cheeks like strawberry syrup... Don't "lick it before you stick it..."
