Does Sony HVR-MRC1 work with HC1 or HC5 (or consumer HDV)?
DSE replied to shogo's topic in Photography and Video
The HVR-MRC1 DOES have a 6-pin Firewire (iLink) connector (Spot, I think you were thinking of the HXR-MC1). And it appears it will work with any firewire equipped cam. You can use it with FCP, but it records .m2t files, and Sony's lit says you have to use Log and Transfer to import the files. From Sony's lit: My guess is that it may be faster than importing AVCHD files, but not real fast. I would love to hear of an actual time trial. One of the reviewers on B&H's site claims he can import files using LOG and CAPTURE (his emphasis). But that is contrary to Sony's info, and it is a lot of money if you aren't sure how it will work. I am waiting for someone like Focus Enhancements to come out with a flash-based recorder that records Quicktime files (their hard drive recorders do). Arghhhh! Duh! Of course I mixed the HCR MC1 and the HXR MC1. Hell, I even referenced the HCR as the MRU....The model number of the MRU (when sold with a Z7/Z5/S270) is HCR MC1. it's equally as fast as importing HDV in terms of speed, but HDV files are larger than AVCHD files by *a bit.* AVCHD to a card (assuming a main profile camcorder) is recorded at a max of 17Mbps. HDV (assuming 1440 x 1080) is 25Mbps. Sorry for the confusion. You cannot use Log/Capture with the MRU as a file-based system. He's wrong. You can Log/Capture *if* you stream the media as real-time video, just like an A1 or other HDV camcorder. -
Baby Death Lens (MKII Century 37mm .3x wide angle)
DSE replied to bomb420's topic in Photography and Video
Yes, it will provide a more wide angle. Caution; the Babydeath is a very open-faced lens (I'm sure you've already looked at it). The coatings are exposed, as is the glass. IMO, it's not a lens for everyday tandem use. But...you know what you're after, I assume. -
I'd have rather been hanging out with good people vs packing and prepping...Sorry I missed, even though it rained (It was shit weather here, too).

Does Sony HVR-MRC1 work with HC1 or HC5 (or consumer HDV)?
DSE replied to shogo's topic in Photography and Video
No tape format in HD is uncompressed. Including HDCAM and Varicam. Both use chroma subsampling...but that's another story. MPEG 2 is a highly compressed format. AVCHD is a subset of MPEG 2 and is a more highly compressed format. You could use a Sony MRU (Memory Recording Unit) over firewire to record HC5 to card, but that would be an exceptionally clumsy and inefficient way to do this, IMO. Not at all a lame question. It's common. Many people don't understand squat about AVCHD. It's extremely complex in its simplicity. -
Baby Death Lens (MKII Century 37mm .3x wide angle)
DSE replied to bomb420's topic in Photography and Video
This is the 7th story I've heard....some say the plastic is better (than metal) to shear than the front of the camera; I strongly disagree. Sorry to hear about it. That sucks. -

DSE replied to shogo's topic in Photography and Video
The MC1 does not offer iLink. No AVCHD camcorder to date does; it's likely it never will. iLink/IEEE1394/Firewire are not part of the AVCHD spec. HDV isn't any more native on a Mac than AVCHD is. -
http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?username=bomb420; This'll put you in touch with the head honcho at HypEye. Rhys, This is the thread I was thinking about, but it appears the handcam wasn't at issue after all.
-
Thanks for sharing your story.
-
it was a joke, Rhys. I understand why handycam is popular at some DZ's but I'm not a big fan. If you've never heard of an entanglement, search DZ.com, there are a few posts on the subject. I'm too lazy at the moment. Yes, if a camera is gonna be on a wrist, it's hard to beat the CX100/105. Light, small, high quality.

Baby Death Lens (MKII Century 37mm .3x wide angle)
DSE replied to bomb420's topic in Photography and Video
To a degree, both. Century is a higher quality glass than Raynox (as reflected in the resolution and price). The mod only serves to amplify those differences. At those widths, I doubt much anyone but a broadcaster or someone striving for balanced color will care at all. -
I was referring to putting a belly cam on a tandem student.
-
Personally, I think you guys got it all wrong. Bellycams on students capture everything just fine, including deployment. No risk of instructor entanglement, hands-free... Pix coming soon.

What, you can't see Tanzania from Tokyo?

Baby Death Lens (MKII Century 37mm .3x wide angle)
DSE replied to bomb420's topic in Photography and Video
-Huge diff in the glass quality between babydeath and the Raynox. -Haven't shot with a modded Raynox, but have seen footage from one. Abberation was terrible, but that won't bother most skydivers, I don't think. -it's half the cost to mod the Raynox, so if #2 point doesn't bother you... -
Need help on Home depot Demo!!
DSE replied to recovercrachead's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Congrats! sounds like the demo went well. How did your hand-out to the crowd come out? -
A thread-mount lens can't easily be made for varied aspect ratios. All lower cost, single element superwides are soft on the edges, most have aberration, T'is the nature of the beast.
-
It can easily mis-time the color, too...but with the added distortion/width, most folks probably don't care much one way or the other. Results will vary from camera to camera, depending on the camera's original width prior to a wide adapter being mounted. Fun to play with, yeah?

HERE is a good place to start. I'm gonna lock this one, lest we start another CX100 thread

Here are pix, had to get my Blackberry connected. This new .5 is available in a few thread sizes starting at 37mm.

Setting up a MacBook Pro for a Windows environment...
DSE replied to Superfletch's topic in Photography and Video
Rendering is horribly slow, and early experiences were unstable, but I'm told it's improved. haven't had time to experiment lately. -
HUGE world of difference between the Liquid .3 and the Babydeath...not even close to the same class, so...be sure of what you want. Personally, I'd never use a Babydeath for anything but special stuff. Too much expensive glass exposed. They have a new .5 I'm excited about for tandems... If you want a .3 and high resolution, I'd go Raynox. Not small form factor, but neither is the Babydeath.

yes, you understand that right, when working with Apple systems. I use Premiere because it's the back end/editing side of AfterEffects. I'm also a certified Adobe trainer, so have to know this stuff. I like playing with all the tools. Vegas is my fave, obviously. But... They're all just tools. Some are more functional and quick than others. If I have to do a perf match or interface with a lot of other editors, then AVID is my first choice, FCS my second choice. If it's a project that will live as one project, then Vegas is my first choice, especially for long form. After Effects and Premiere go together like bread and butter, where After Effects and Vegas go together like steak and cranberry sauce (they work but it's a lot of work to get them there). -
I understand it's meant for HD television. That said, what mechanism are you going to use to play that back? Blu-ray? Direct from DVI/SVGA? (which codec?) DVD 5 in a PS3? MPEG 4 over computer w/HDMI output? The codec variables make this a challenging workflow in some cases. From an Apple you could output 1920 over Revolver to BD disc or DVD 5, and play it in a BD or PS3, out over HDMI 1.3 to an HD display... (as one example)

Sony Vegas 9 - platninum edition or platinum pro pack
DSE replied to skyjumpenfool's topic in Photography and Video
Propack and Platinum are same thing with a few additional software inclusions plus additonal tech support (I think). Platinum is all you need for video editing, but the audio and music tools (like Cinescore) are nice.
