Well now....I'll bet I can show at least a 20:1 DV tape failure ratio to cards...whether they're Xpress, CF, MSPD, or SDHC cards... But I know what you mean. The easier argument is "the memory of the DV tape that could be stored on a shelf and found by fingertip vs *SEARCH*."

What is the most common cause for malfunctions?

Jump 1174. Packed by someone that I probably shouldn't have allowed to pack. My bad. -
My last 3 paraplegic skydives-from Friday 29th May

Very impressive, Dale!! Tremendous improvement in just the last month alone. You'll have that deluxe new rig in NO TIME!! It'll be terrific to see you progress to the wingsuit! -
there is an indexing repair built into the camera. But... if the files aren't showing up on a computer, they're likely not repairable. Are you formatting or deleting after each jump? You're better off formatting, for future reference. Some disc utilities might be able to reassemble the fragments.

you can watch the Tandem Video Make Easy video... you could bring out me or one of my guys for a weekend/weekday to train you... you can spend a fair amount of time and get a lot of knowledge in this forum... You can hire a 14 year old computer geek. They know everything.

Oh, you remember the old days.

And the follow up is, does sliding 150' on your tailbone (or calf/thigh/buttock) have anything to do with a PLF?

JP, I'm not suggesting anything was or was not "OK." What I'm suggesting is that none of us know what happened here, because we weren't there. It certainly doesn't have anything to do with "prices." Believe it or not, I believe in the presumption of innocence until proven otherwise. I understand that many Americans have difficulty with this concept. My momma raised me to believe that's just plain wrong. Especially at a time when the DZO is facing a jury trial. At the end of the day, whether it's a DZO or person accused of leaving their trampoline accessible to kids...I find it difficult to beat the shit out of them. That's a responsibility of the jury, not a bunch of uninformed skydivers. Why is it that the media is always full of shit when it comes to fatalities, but media reports are accepted as gospel in this sort of situation? Have we heard any statement from someone who was there? I haven't. What I have read is an anonymous post from a person claiming that "six very experienced instructors said "blah blah blah...." Yet the NTSB report says three instructors said that the jumper screwed up. I'll take the NTSB report, Vanna....because at least it's a disempassioned investigative body that isn't involved in a determination of guilt or innocence, just the facts. I'm not interested in defending Lodi, I'm interested in defending the concept of innocent until demonstrated otherwise or until I experience first hand, what some have described here. I'm not about to take your word or anyone else' word for it. I've watched a lot of skydivers putting on wingsuits before they knew what they were getting into; two of those ended up as fatalities, both of whom I knew. Why has no one said a word about the responsibility of the instructors that helped the dead wingsuiters get into that situation?? After all, these guys are dead, not broken. Not one word has been said about the culpability of the "instructors" and the role they played in the death, yet some of you want to burn down a DZO on hearsay. That illogic doesn't wash with me.

I'm not the one posting "XXX dropzone does this, does that, and does the other thing" having never been to that dropzone. The "rules" of the DZ are plainly posted on sheets of paper and posterboard. Common sense dictates the rest. It's "arrogant" to say "here are the rules, obey them?" I'd say it's arrogant to go against what's posted on the wall in plain sight, and even more arrogant to ignore what experienced people have forewarned about. I'd wager that Lodi has a far higher percentage of people being kicked off the DZ for safety violations than most DZ's. Is it the safest DZ on the planet? Dunno. I've seen worse, I've certainly seen better. I've jumped at the Farm, even shaken your hand, yet you couldn't remember me a few weeks later. hmmmm? Memory issues, "young man?" I don't know that the DZ puts students out on S/L without an instructor anymore than you do. At least I've had the opportunity to observe the DZ in action on multiple occasions, so I'm not speaking out of my backside, "young man." You're the one that introduced tandems into the discussion. I wonder what the ratio of tandem incidents of the Farm vs Lodi might be. I'll bet they're fairly equal if not lesser than > This thread isn't about tandems. No one mentioned tandems until you did. You don't know any more about the actual incident than I do, or anyone else who wasn't there. The one glaring difference between you and most in *this* instance, is that I've got at least 75 jumps at Lodi over many months in varying conditions. You've never been there.

There is now a review column for the Pulse in the reviews section

If they don't, then they're intentionally ignorant. The rules are more plainly posted there than at most DZ's. One cannot not see the rules. We're not talking about tandem students, and I believe Lodi has as good a safety record regarding tandems as most any DZ. I agree, suggesting someone "deserved what they got" is messed up and it makes me angry as hell to hear someone say so regardless of the action or consequence. Suppose the plaintiff had hit the tail hard enough to take it completely off? He'd already endangered the lives of everyone else on the aircraft through his jump-up exit. He could have killed them all. Would they have deserved death? Burning Bill, Lodi, Beech, manufacturers, or skydiving at the stake in this thread only serves to benefit those that would harm our sport.

having seen the aftermath of a freefall impact on the ground, the deceased having worn a Bonehead Mindwarp (open face composite), the jokes and sayings about the "face being recognizable" are fairly accurate. A full face might leave a little more of the facial area intact. A mindwarp protected my head on an in-door bridle deployment that when the pilot chute took off, I was slammed against the side of the aircraft. Still have the paint in my helmet to this day, and the aircraft bears my mark. I imagine I'd have paint embedded in my cheek and forehead were it not for a decent, albeit non-rated helmet. One other thing...if you're gonna wingsuit; wear a helmet. Our collisions are nearly always forward moving (placing the head as the first imact point) and you just might find yourself having a bad day without a helmet. Kinda strange, I refuse to wear helmets on motorcycles, bulls, or horses, and won't use a seatbelt anywhere but on the aircraft. But I wear a helmet on most every skydive.

I see more "handage." Looks like everyone is trying to hold hands. Andreea musta been real popular. Looks like it was a fun weekend, wish I'd been there. Nice job on the edit, J

Let's keep the other thread going.
-
Only if you tell it do. If the master source is AVC, then it'll burn those files without any recompression, unless you specify in the project properties that it should be SD. Then...it will be kinda ugly using AVC low bit source recompressed for SD MPEG2.

What's going on is a mistake was made by someone, most likely the injured party. The mistake is speculative no matter how one looks at it. "Truth" will come out if it goes to trial. It may not be the correct "truth." Either way...the earlier threads and potentially this one only serve as lawyer food in either direction. The post you quoted was from an anonymous poster making unsubstantiated claims, said poster could have been being truthful or setting a flag in the sand for a later reference. The NTSB report doesn't reference "six instructors" but does reference 12 other skydivers, three of whom said the injured person "jumped up" and had been reprimanded for doing same on the previous day.

It's a very good analogy. another analogy is to say that the VEG file is a container for all the addresses of the media. Unlike other NLE's that unnecessarily duplicate the original files for working purposes, Vegas never duplicates, so wherever you put the files, that's where they stay. The VEG file records and references those addresses. If the media location DOES change by chance (such as a driveletter changing, etc) then Vegas prompts/seeks for the file elsewhere.

THAT was great.

you can access a similar menu by choosing FILE | Properties as well.

Just got word that Divewerks has confirmed and will be at the event as well. Awesome organizers at this event!

LOTS of Hawaii experience here. Great dropzone, wonderful people at Skydive Hawaii. Pacific isn't bad either. Both require 150 jump minimum. And IMO, if you're not really current, 150 jumps isn't enough. Long, narrow landing area with rotors from trees and buildings, very near mountains. Winds are always higher than a novice would normally jump in unless they learned in those winds. Either get really current and plan on not necessarily jumping, or leave the rig at home. There are lots of threads on Hawaii...search will help you. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=3491548#3491548

I'd respectfully suggest that if you're on a load of wingsuit-only skydivers and the organizer has determined a flight path, that you fly that path, whether it's a single, double, or triple 90. Had a wingsuiter do exactly this only three days ago, and found himself opening amongst the tandems. Again, I'd respectfully suggest that this isn't an "only, always, never" scenario. I don't have an 'nth' the experience Chuck does, but it seems that changing your pattern from the flock would be the safer alternative. ie; flock is left hand pattern, you blow the exit and are below; fly a right hand 90/90 instead, to assure avoidance of not only the flock, but other skydivers that may be in the air. Not only does the DVD have a rewind button, but it also won't consume any beer when visiting your home. Bu yeah...if you can make you way to Zhills to learn from Chuck for a few days...it's likely better than learning from a DVD.

Without getting into a bunch of tech.. AVI, MOV, etc are just "wrappers." Like a grocery bag, a wrapper can contain various codecs, file types. For example, an AVI wrapper can contain an MPEG file. Your canon records an MJPEG stream, and your computer puts it in an AVI wrapper. If the codec is a weird codec (such as the one FRAPS utilizes), then regardless of the wrapper, your NLE or other applications may not be able to decode it.

Camcorders don't record in an avi package, is it a DV camera? next thing I'd look at is whether you're running antivirus, or other background applications.
