More Gropro footage - be careful out there!
DSE replied to Rover's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
The general opinion seems to be that the sticky will tear off or the plastic will break on the mounts. We already know this is a false assumption. I'd prefer nylon bolts if this is the preferred mounting method. -
Opteka Platinum Series 37mm 0.2X Low-Profile "Ninja" Fisheye Lens?
DSE replied to Marc84's topic in Photography and Video
I would have thought that they met, if not exceed, the standard definition for HD (whatever that is). There are multiple ways to use the term "HD" as marketing hype and not be in violation. If it can pass an image while mounted to an HD acquisition device (camera) then it can be considered HD in terms of marketing. If the glass passes ahigher resolution than the normal offerings the company produces, it'll fall into that realm too. in the most strict sense, very few lens adapters actually pass more than 600 lines. To be "real" HD, the lens needs to resolve more than 700 lines. HD acquisition is exclusively one of three resolutions: 1280 x 720 1440 x 1080 1920 x 1080 Nothing else, nothing less. However...GoPro's are considered HD even tho their imagers aren't "true HD" and their lenses can't begin to resolve more than 500 lines. It is mostly market hype, based around -deliverable- resolution vs acquisition resolution. It's honestly not something worth worrying too much about if you're using small-sensor AVCHD cameras. If you were dealing with .5" sensors, this would be a different discussion. -
your Kill Line is too short? Or your bridle is too short? If it's a kill line, get it fixed. You run a risk of a PCIT whether it's a WS jump or not. If you're talking about a bridle, how short is "too short" in your mind? One doesn't -need- a 9' bridle for wingsuiting, but if you're flying a big suit, it's a pretty good idea. A PCIT or long hesitation increases the chances of line twists if your body is changing position during deployment.

Opteka Platinum Series 37mm 0.2X Low-Profile "Ninja" Fisheye Lens?
DSE replied to Marc84's topic in Photography and Video
none of the small barrel lenses are HD. Century, Diamond, Cookie, Opteka, Waycool, Sony...they might stamp "HD" on there, but there isn't one of them that can resolve more than 300 lines (if that) Somewhere here on DZ.com, I tested a bunch of them with a rez chart a couple years back. -
Congrats to him and his coach!

Just an excuse for the mistake...nothing more!!! A mistake was made. It has been admitted. An apology followed. Restitution has been offered and refused. I'm failing to understand your reasoning at this point.

with close to 200 on the Pulse and over 1K on the Silhouette; The Sil is a tad more sporty, and it has a good flare. I still use a Sil for demo when flying a larger flag. It responds nicely to various inputs while being incredibly tolerant of error. The Pulse is even more tolerant, does not have a strong flare, but doesn't need it. It lands so flat that with almost no input, it lands smoothly. Landings on rears is kinda fun and not at all exciting (in terms of "what's gonna happen now?") I think the Pulse is aimed at the older, slower crowd, or for folks that just want a canopy to get em' to the ground with zero drama no matter what they do. An older jumper (late 70's) with around 3000 is using my Pulse 170 and really enjoying it as compared to the Sabre II and Spectre he's previously jumped.

Dealing with Media at a DZ: WAS: Midair Elsinore - 26 Aug 2011
DSE replied to quade's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Managing Media on the Dropzone.... Long and short...Reporters are going to write a story. Period. That's their job. It cannot be prevented. Like skydivers (and everyone else), they'll lose their jobs if they don't do it in a timely and proper manner. -
Exactly this. Machines need to be on the web for Youtube/Vimeo uploads, but gaming, emails, facebook, blah blah...that's where the crap happens. Machines can be locked out of all URLs except specifics; I recommend this to all our clients.

You know...I could almost accept an audible on a student as a "hard deck indicator" (Wake up, you're 15 seconds from impact) for indicating points to turn or set up...I disagree. Eyes and awareness are necessarily ingrained, and instruments rob people of that opportunity to learn because they tend to respond. Jump without an audible and put your logger in your pocket. In other words, no audible cues, only an alti on your wrist. Try to avoid looking at the alti. Your body clock will naturally respond, and chances are 99.9% you'll "hear" an audible, even tho it's not there. Your body becomes programmed to rely on something that cannot/should not be relied upon.

There are drummers that absolutely have to fill every 4 bars during someone's solo, then the 4 bars becomes 2 and the fills start earlier - before you know it the soloist is playing over a constant drum fill... other rhythm players are guilty of it too. Bad form. But that ain't Steve Moore. He plays a solid, simply hammer/crowbar backbeat with out fill. Most of his kits have no rack toms. He's not filling every eighth, quarter, half, down with a voice; he's playing machine-solid backbeats with no fills. His skill is in his stick maneuvering, facial expressions, PERFORMANCE. He's a PERFORMER. But... he's a PERFORMER being SHOWCASED that is so good, a blind person is equally entertained. That's the draw, the beauty, and the phenomenal talent that the biggest drum names in the world have been praising for 2 years; he is incredibly simple in his playing, while his facial expressions and sticking talent provide for a show. He's one musician and performer to whom none of the typical drummer jokes apply. Just last night I was having dinner with a Mennonite friend, and her comment was that most of the problem with the world today is that so many people cannot function without seeing the BAD or criticizing everything. This guy is fun, wholesome, incredibly talented, successful. People all over the world praise him. Even most of the critical YouTube comments are in awe of his talent while keeping the band lock-steady. Except here on DZ.com...Everybody gots to piss on it. At least he's employed, makes a LOT of dough, and that's much more than one can say for *most* of this community.

Well, you're the professional musician. All I know is what I like. I guess he can keep time, but I don't like the guy's style. He comes off as one of those douche bags that always has to be the center of attention. Just rubs me wrong philosophically. He's doin' well with it. Seen the new Virgin Air ad featuring him? It's funny as hell. Can't find it on Youtube, but it comes up as a banner on a few musician pages. He's the "seatmate from hell." From what I briefly met and have read, he's a very, very humble guy. Read his blog some time, going back to well before he got "famous." At least he doesn't have a cowbell. If you watch the video I linked, get to around 3/4 of the way through and you'll see him juggle 3 sticks, hit on an audience member, and take stick tosses from the crowd without missing a beat (well...he does miss one). It's fun, talented, and something well worth paying to see.

It may be annoying, but that's why he's with the band (was hired as a showcase) Aside from his way over the top performance (which isn't on every song) he's a rock-solid drummer who regularly performs at workshops and schools. In other words, he's a performer. A damn good one. I've traveled to Vegas solely to see him perform. Amazing how his career has taken off since that video went viral. Hats off to anyone who can do anything like he does. BTW, part of their showcase at HOB is that the frontman pretends to be annoyed by Moore, and Moore pretends to stop his performance whenever Rik turns around. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfMFrpa66TI&feature=related Very tasty, and even without the visuals...nice grooves.

Stolen Re-Programmed Cypress AADs May Fire Unexpectedly
DSE replied to PWScottIV's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Do you really think that the margin for profit on a cypress is that high? If the seller got the unit for free (sponsorship or theft) and can sell for 'whatever', then the profit margin can be crazy high. Cost-0 Sell-800.00 800.00 profit (not suggesting that happened here, merely answering your question). -
nope, I'm not. Specifically why? Because it is for the betterment of the community, educational in nature, viewable for purposes of public commentary, and falls under Fair Use. Besides, if it's on the web, only an idiot believes their copyrights are intact.

Stolen Re-Programmed Cypress AADs May Fire Unexpectedly
DSE replied to PWScottIV's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
here's another thought... "Dude, I have a CYPRES for sale, dirt cheap. It's got four years left on it, so it can't go back. I'll sell it to you for 400.00." Why would they ever need to go to SSK or Airtec? Not saying that's what happened here, but...units that have been reprogrammed are not going to appear new. Especially if warning labels have been removed. (CBS News story) -
yep. Was already embedded in our "small format cameras" incident report. I snagged it fast because these videos seem to disappear quickly from YouTube.

Another possiblity (and I believe in combo with the bridle under the Dbag) is a portion of the excess coming over the Dbag in the container, Dbag goes through the portion, pulled in rotation by the pc under the Dbag. We re-created on the ground, and it is plausible. Packer seems to think that's what happened too. I'll post a pic with my next packjob; it'll make sense easier than descriptions.

Stolen Re-Programmed Cypress AADs May Fire Unexpectedly
DSE replied to PWScottIV's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Here is a jury charge sheet related to reckless endangerment. This definition would have me convicting on this incident. ***A person RECKLESSLY ENGAGES IN CONDUCT WHICH CREATES A GRAVE RISK OF DEATH TO ANOTHER PERSON when he or she engages in conduct which creates a grave and unjustifiable risk that another person’s death will occur, and when he or she is aware of and consciously disregards that risk, and when that grave and unjustifiable risk is of such nature and degree that disregard of it constitutes a gross deviation from the standard of conduct that a reasonable person would observe in the situation. 2 The charge sheet is from NY, vs CT, but I can't imagine they'd deviate much. conndcj@po.state.ct.us Let their Chief Attorney know how you feel and why. Let the USPA know your feelings and why. Each of us has a voice (of support or not). Use that voice to the benefit or peril of skydiving. Some folks are going to feel that an AAD firing at an improper altitude is no big deal. You're a skydiver; deal with the risk. Of course there should be the presumption of innocence; sharing your voice in the event of guilt does not presume guilt, either. It does provide a communal frame of reference in the event of a guilty plea or finding. -
Bobby Brown... Jesus Thnks You're a Jerk. Flakes Jewish Princess (prelude to Dancin' Fool) Produced Ike's last solo album, the Fowler Bros Airpocket played on one of my projects. Their dad was my prof at U of U. And...last year, Dweezil played "Eruption" at a party we produced. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VhfXrgv1XiY Saw Frank live several times, but never met him. Gawd, he was intelligent, talented, and human.

Been there many times. There is no skydiving (you can't even fly a remote control toy airplane). JB isn't far over the border, but they're not open often; email or call in advance. tis' a beautiful place, no doubt. Windtunnel on Sentosa Island is new, fully loaded with amenities. People are generally very friendly. I'm there 2-3 times per year, usually for 10 days each time. Know the downtown area and quays fairly well, but getting out to the industrial areas and some of the "rural" (nothing rural in Sing) is not well known to me. It is the shopping capital of the area. Lots of money there, and life ain't cheap.

WTF are you talking about? -It's a useful training video. I asked him if I could post it as such before I did. I put text in to keep it light and to assure watermarking. -He was told in advance he was jumping a wingsuit that most experienced people would agree he was not qualified for. In his country, they apparently have different standards. Fine...he wasn't prevented from jumping it, as much as I'd preferred he not jump it. He had linetwists on each and every jump, and had a less-than-ideal distance from the horizontal stab on exit. He'd never jumped an Otter before, so a smaller suit would have been a better option, at least at first. -He was warned in advance of the problems of his canopy/rig and offered an alternative. Not my thing to expend resources chasing a canopy down in the lake. -He made it clear he cannot pack and wouldn't jump if a packer wasn't available. Packer screwed up, knows it, learned from it, knows the video is posted, and agrees it's a useful video exercise. It's rare we have two camera angles of a real malfunction, isn't it? How -exactly- was the jumper not educated? How -exactly- was it not professionally delivered to him? Where is this "rant" you mention?
